Appearance
Yellow Monkey is a tall man whose deliberately lifeless, pursed-lip expression contrasts with the authority of a Marine Admiral. 24 25
- Wears a yellow suit beneath a Marine coat of justice. 24 25
- Usually wears sunglasses. 24
- Often appears relaxed or lecherous even in dangerous situations. 55
Personality
Yellow Monkey is profoundly lazy and habitually pessimistic about assignments, especially those given to him because of his speed. He repeatedly complains that Sengoku sends him after dangerous targets and wishes he had been assigned an easier role or possessed Aokiji's abilities instead. 24 128
His casual manner conceals capable judgment. He initially attempts diplomacy with Ian, offers him the vacant Seven Warlords position, and recognizes when a direct confrontation has become strategically unsound. During their first battle, he stalls Ian long enough for the Marines to evacuate before retreating himself. 25 26 30 31
Although he calls himself a mere “salaryman,” Yellow Monkey follows orders when the World Government’s interests are at stake. The deaths of two Celestial Dragons force him to pursue Ian seriously despite his reluctance, while later operations show him accepting retreat orders when continued combat is no longer viable. 55 56 134
Abilities & Skills
Glint-Glint Fruit
Yellow Monkey can transform his body into light, giving him exceptional mobility, elemental evasion, and long-range firepower.
- Converts into golden light to evade attacks and reform elsewhere. Armament Haki can harm him, but does not completely prevent his elementalization. 26 29
- Travels extremely quickly over long distances through reflected light and can reposition around a battlefield in a teleportation-like manner through scattered light particles. 55 57
- Fires lasers and barrages of light projectiles, including Laser, Yasakani no Magatama, Aurora Spike, and Light Wheel Cannon. 27 31 55 56
- Forms light-based weapons and defenses, including Heavenly Cloud Slash, Ama no Murakumo Sword, Yata Mirror, and light swords used in close combat. 27 56 57
- His light-speed kicks are a primary close-range weapon. 28 30 56
- Sustained evasion within a field of light particles drains his stamina, particularly when Ian’s freezing techniques force repeated escapes. 57
Endless Light Domain
Yellow Monkey has awakened his Logia power into Endless Light Domain, transforming a wide area into a field of controllable light particles. 28
- Initially transforms roughly a thousand-meter area, allowing attacks to emerge from unexpected locations and enabling movement throughout the domain. 28
- Uses Light Wheel Cannon to launch countless lasers within the domain. 28
- Expands the domain to a substantially larger range during the Sabaody battle, trapping Ian in attacks from nearly every direction. 56
- Can gather the domain’s light into high-output attacks such as Maximum Wheel: Light Wheel Cannon and Sunlight Explosion. 31 57
Haki and Life Return
Yellow Monkey possesses strong Observation and Armament Haki, along with the reflexes needed to use his light-based powers effectively.
- Uses Observation Haki to sense danger, evade large-scale attacks, and escape Ian’s Millennium Ice Prison. 26 30
- His reactions allow him to respond to Ian’s speed and Future Sight-driven attacks, though Ian can eventually predict his reappearance points. 57
- Uses Armament Haki in combat, but Ian’s swordsmanship is capable of breaking through his defenses. 29
- Uses Life Return to control wounds and continue fighting after suffering severe injuries. 29 57
Swordsmanship and Close Combat
Yellow Monkey was an accomplished swordsman even before relying on his Devil Fruit abilities. 29
- Uses Heavenly Cloud Slash to counter Ian’s White Tiger sword technique. 27 56
- Wields dual light swords and employs Ama no Murakumo Sword: Ten Fists Sword Slash against Ian’s Ice Azure Dragon. 57
- Can fight Ian in direct sword locks, though Ian’s superior physique and Conqueror’s Haki pressure repeatedly push him back. 30 31
- Relies more on speed, elemental movement, and technical skill than raw physical durability. 29 56
Relationships

Story Role / Major Arcs
Maple Island
Yellow Monkey arrives on Maple Island under Sengoku’s orders to investigate Ian, whose reported feats include killing Donquixote Doflamingo, fighting Hawk-Eye evenly, and mastering all three forms of Haki. He locates Ian in the Chaos Zone and initially hopes the encounter can be resolved peacefully. 24
Rather than arrest Ian for killing Doflamingo, Yellow Monkey offers him the vacant Seven Warlords of the Sea position. Ian rejects the offer as submission to the World Government, leading Yellow Monkey to warn that Ian will become a major target. 25 26
The two fight across Maple Island. Yellow Monkey reveals Endless Light Domain and repeatedly avoids Ian through light-based movement, but Ian’s ice techniques, Future Sight, and growing battlefield control force him into an increasingly unfavorable battle. Once the Marines have evacuated, Yellow Monkey escapes rather than wait for Ian’s ultimate technique. 28 30 31
Sabaody Archipelago
Following Ian’s killing of two Celestial Dragons, Yellow Monkey is ordered to capture him. He admits that he does not want to fight Ian again, but treats the mission more seriously due to direct World Government pressure. 55 56
Yellow Monkey expands Endless Light Domain and pushes Ian to use both the Seventh Gate and Bankai. Despite his mobility, he is pursued by Ian’s Future Sight and Ice Azure Dragon, exhausted by repeated evasions, and finally frozen inside a massive iceberg by Ice Heaven Hundred Flower Funeral. 56 57
Ian’s subsequent slash shatters the iceberg and leaves Yellow Monkey unconscious with catastrophic wounds. Momousagi stabilizes him to prevent death from blood loss. 57 58
Gran Tesoro and Pleasure Street
Yellow Monkey later intervenes in Ian’s battle with Akainu on Gran Tesoro, using Endless Light Domain to help contain Ian’s ice attack. He and Akainu subsequently cooperate against Ian, but struggle to overcome Ian’s combined Bankai, Seventh Gate, Haki, and black flames. 128 129 130
After CP0 directors Blood Ghost and Mingfeng join the battle, Yellow Monkey remains unable to gain an advantage against Ian. Blood Ghost’s death and the failure of the four-person alliance lead Yellow Monkey to accept the World Government’s retreat order. 132 133 134
Later Operations
Yellow Monkey joins the struggle over a treasure chest during the World Expo-era conflict, acting as the Marines’ rapid-response combatant. 165
He is later deployed to Wano Country to seize control of the ruling powers, confronting Kurozumi Orochi, Beast Pirates remnants, and Who’s-Who. 179 180
