Nature and Awakening

The Mangekyo Sharingan is not awakened through ordinary talent, hormones, or a simple increase in ocular power. Yansheng’s experiments conclude that extreme emotion produces a unique chakra in the brain; this chakra then affects the optic nerves and transforms the Sharingan. 35

Uchiha records describe generations of attempts to force the awakening through genjutsu, dissection, emotional manipulation, and engineered tragedies. These practices also led to the development and misuse of Izanagi and Izanami, nearly destroying the clan. 29

Yansheng argues that emotional attachment—not ambition for power—is the key aptitude. In his view, Uchiha who deeply value others are more likely to awaken the Mangekyo, while those obsessed with obtaining it may never do so. 35

An ordinary illusion is insufficient to reliably induce awakening because the target must experience the emotional event as real. Yansheng’s successful experiment on Itachi therefore required an Emotional Potion, Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami, and a modified Izanami that locked Itachi into an apparently real traumatic loop. 35 36

Yansheng’s early research treats the Byakugan as the foundational dōjutsu from which the Sharingan, Rinnegan, and Tenseigan diverged. Urashiki later corroborates that both the Sharingan and Rinnegan are advanced forms of the Byakugan, while also describing the Sharingan as a cursed and rejected power within Ōtsutsuki society. 7 222

The Mangekyo is not necessarily the final state of the Sharingan. Yansheng’s personal eyes retain their Mangekyo abilities while evolving through a Six-Tomoe state into a distinct Nine-Tomoe Sharingan, suggesting that his route differs from the conventional progression toward the Rinnegan or Rinne Sharingan. 183 186

Kotoamatsukami

Shisui’s Mangekyo ability is a covert genjutsu capable of influencing a target’s mind without obvious signs of manipulation.

• Shisui’s right eye can apply a brief-period hypnosis with a comparatively short cooldown. 7
• His left eye’s version has a cooldown measured in years, potentially more than a decade. 7
• Kotoamatsukami fails against Yansheng when used on his abnormal ocular-chakra-filled body. 7
• Black Zetsu later uses Shisui’s eye to control Kushina, demonstrating the technique’s danger even against a jinchūriki. 31
• Through a cultivated Kotoamatsukami specimen, Yansheng places Orochimaru under long-term influence and compels him to provide intelligence. 135

Kamui

Kamui is the spatial Mangekyo ability associated with Kakashi’s transplanted Sharingan.

Susanoo is a chakra construct formed through immense ocular power.

• Yansheng can produce an artificial Susanoo without activating a Mangekyo by drawing on the ocular power of 100,000 sealed Byakugan. 40
• His true body manifests a winged, four-armed Perfect Susanoo armed with four massive chakra blades. 40
• A Shadow Clone can sustain only a lower-stage Susanoo because it carries insufficient ocular power. 40
• Yansheng’s imitation is vulnerable to the Preta Path because it is fundamentally a shell of ocular chakra rather than a genuine Mangekyo Susanoo. 43

Amenotejikara

Amenotejikara is Yansheng’s left-eye spatial-swapping technique.

• It is a Rinnegan-level ocular ability that manifests unusually within Yansheng’s Mangekyo Sharingan. 146
• Before his Nine-Tomoe evolution, Yansheng lacks sufficient ocular power to use it effectively, rendering it largely impractical. 146

Yachihoko

Yachihoko is Uchiha Hikari’s Mangekyo technique.

• It places marks on targets that permit Hikari to control them and draw on their chakra to restore her own chakra and ocular power. 88
• Against opponents of comparable strength, the technique is highly dangerous; against a substantially stronger opponent, its control can be resisted or overridden. 93
• Yachihoko marks are later used to monitor allies’ conditions and to drain traitors of chakra. 212

Nine-Tomoe Sharingan

Yansheng’s Nine-Tomoe Sharingan is an evolved Sharingan state distinct from the Rinne Sharingan.

• Its pattern consists of the original three tomoe surrounded by six additional tomoe in a second ring, unlike the Rinne Sharingan’s three concentric rings. 183
• Yansheng can freely shift between Three-Tomoe, Six-Tomoe, and Nine-Tomoe forms. The Six-Tomoe state retains his Mangekyo pattern and ocular techniques, while the Nine-Tomoe state is his full-power form. 183
• In the Six-Tomoe state, Yansheng can alter his Mangekyo pattern to strengthen associated ocular techniques and potentially acquire additional techniques through other Mangekyo ocular power. 183

Izanagi and Izanami

Izanagi and Izanami are forbidden Uchiha ocular techniques closely tied to the clan’s historical attempts to pursue Mangekyo-level power.

• Izanagi rewrites an accepted outcome of reality after activation, but cannot alter events that occurred before it was used. 46
• Yansheng uses a Three-Tomoe Sharingan embedded in replicated Hashirama Cells to activate Izanagi and reverse Kushina’s fatal defeat. 32 33
• Izanami traps a target in a looping, reality-like illusion; its release condition can be altered by the caster. 35
• Yansheng modifies Izanami during Itachi’s awakening experiment, unintentionally trapping Itachi in repeated visions of massacring his family for more than two years. 35 50

Limitations

• Historical Mangekyo users typically exhaust their ocular power, leaving no preserved Mangekyo Sharingan for later generations. 29
• Artificially recreating the physical eye is insufficient on its own; Yansheng’s early clones reach only the One-Tomoe stage before withering. 35
• Simulated trauma through ordinary genjutsu does not reliably produce an awakening; Yansheng requires layered genjutsu, drugs, and Izanami to awaken Itachi’s eyes. 35 36
• Yansheng’s abnormal Byakugan-derived ocular state grants immense power, but prolonged x-ray vision causes severe visual exhaustion and strains his original Sharingan. 33
• The artificial Mangekyo specimens created through the Little Ten-Tails are not confirmed to have been implanted into a living user or to possess the endurance of naturally awakened eyes. 46 48

History

Yansheng’s abnormal eyes first draw attention when he confronts Shisui over Kotoamatsukami. Their pale-blue and crimson appearance leads the Uchiha to speculate that he has awakened a Mangekyo Sharingan, though Yansheng denies that classification. 6 7

The appearance of a Mangekyo-like power in a ten-year-old destabilizes the clan’s politics. Fugaku sees Yansheng as both a potential asset and an uncontrollable threat, while Shisui’s failed use of Kotoamatsukami confirms that Yansheng’s ocular power does not behave like a conventional Mangekyo. 7 8

After Shisui disappears, Fugaku orders the Uchiha to train in Izanagi under severe restrictions. At the same time, Yansheng begins cultivating Mangekyo tissue, researching the relationship between emotions, chakra, the soul, and ocular evolution. 21 29

Yansheng’s experiment on Itachi provides the first successful artificial Mangekyo awakening. Although the experiment reveals the chakra-based mechanism behind the transformation, it also causes devastating psychological harm through the modified Izanami. 35 36 50

Yansheng later fails to awaken his own Mangekyo through drugs, implanted chakra, and extreme anger. The failure instead leads to the discovery of the Little Ten-Tails, whose evolutionary chakra ultimately produces artificial Mangekyo Sharingan based on Kamui and Kotoamatsukami. 45 46

During the ensuing conflicts, Mangekyo powers become increasingly transferable and weaponized. Black Zetsu possesses Shisui and uses his eyes to control Kushina and manifest Susanoo, while Yansheng incorporates Mangekyo specimens into artificial humans and constructs countermeasures against Obito’s Kamui. 31 32 17 86

Yansheng’s own Mangekyo finally awakens after the extreme pain of his clone’s Sage Body activation returns to him. Its subsequent abilities, Kyōka Suigetsu and Amenotejikara, demonstrate that an independently awakened Mangekyo can develop powers beyond standard Uchiha techniques, though both impose severe demands. 139 146

After gaining control over his chakra and purging the Byakugan and Tenseigan-derived power that had burdened his body, Yansheng’s Mangekyo evolves into the Nine-Tomoe Sharingan. This state preserves his Mangekyo functions while allowing the replication of Rinnegan, Black Eye, and ultimately Omnipotence-level ocular techniques. 183 186 207 214

Later Ōtsutsuki testimony reframes the Sharingan as an advanced but cursed Byakugan-derived power. This view parallels the Ninja World’s long-standing treatment of the Uchiha as a cursed clan and reinforces the association between the Mangekyo, emotional trauma, social fear, and the pursuit of dangerous power. 222
