Background

Gu Rong is the biological grandfather of Gu En and a senior pillar of the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect. Known as Bone Douluo, he is the inheritor of the Bone Dragon martial soul and had long feared that his lineage lacked a worthy successor. Gu En’s awakening of the Bone Dragon—and then the Blood Dragon—moves him to tears and restores his pride in the Gu family line. 1

Following the awakening, Gu Rong grants Gu En unrestricted access to the sect outside forbidden areas and ensures that cultivation resources are prioritized for him. He later personally accompanies Gu En into the Star Dou Great Forest, suppresses the 999-year Space Bone Lizard, and stands ready to interrupt the dangerous soul-ring absorption if necessary. 1 2

Gu Rong becomes one of Gu En’s principal mentors, teaching him spatial combat and the mysteries of spatial rifts. His rivalry with Sword Douluo Chen Xin over Gu En’s training develops into a shared mentorship, with Gu Rong focusing on Gu En’s Bone Dragon and Chen Xin developing his offensive potential. 3 4

Gu Rong is a gaunt, white-haired elder whose skeletal build and deeply sunken eye sockets give him an eerie presence. Despite his intimidating appearance, he often shows warmth and open affection toward Gu En. 1

His protectiveness can become ruthless. When Dugu Bo attacks Gu En, Gu Rong immediately freezes the poison needles with Spatial Lockdown and crushes Dugu Bo under spatial pressure. Although he generally trusts Gu En without hesitation, Gu Rong is occasionally unsettled by his grandson’s ruthless methods. He is disturbed when Gu En coerces A Yin through threats against Tang San, yet accepts Gu En’s explanation that it is a strategic “battle of hearts.” 19

Gu En’s Awakening and Early Training

Gu Rong presides over Gu En’s martial soul awakening with Ning Fengzhi and Chen Xin. He is overjoyed when Gu En inherits the Bone Dragon martial soul and becomes even more convinced that his grandson will surpass the family legacy after the Blood Dragon appears. 1

He protects Gu En during the hunt for his first soul ring, mentors him in spatial abilities, and argues with Chen Xin over how Gu En should be trained. 2 3

Sunset Forest and the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well

Gu Rong locates the sealed valley in Sunset Forest and overwhelms Dugu Bo when the latter attacks Gu En. He then guards the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well for a month while Gu En refines immortal herbs and evolves his martial soul. 6 7

Gu En rewards him with the Strange Velvet Sky-Piercing Chrysanthemum, allowing Gu Rong to reach Level 97. Gu Rong subsequently escorts him into the depths of Sunset Forest to obtain a third soul ring and watches in shock as Gu En reveals Demon Dragon Transformation. 8 9

Discovery of A Yin and the Blue Silver Emperor Soul Bone

Gu Rong accompanies Gu En to the mountains outside Holy Soul Village and uses his spatial senses to identify the barrier concealing A Yin’s cave. He witnesses the recovery of the hundred-thousand-year Blue Silver Emperor right leg soul bone and accepts Gu En’s claim that the Sea God guided him to the location. 17 18

He later guards Gu En during the soul-bone fusion and helps conceal the true source of Gu En’s sudden increase in vitality and power. 19 20

Nuoding Academy Conflict

Gu Rong protects Gu En during the confrontation with Tang San, Xiao Wu, and Tang Hao. He blocks Tang Hao’s attack, restrains him with spatial shackles, and joins Chen Xin and Dugu Bo in the decisive assault that leaves Tang Hao one-armed and severely weakened. 21 22 24

Soul Core Condensation

After Dugu Bo successfully tests the Soul Core method, Gu Rong trusts Gu En’s modified technique and condenses a Soul Core alongside Chen Xin. The result gives him near-limitless spatial-power recovery and further elevates the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect’s military strength. 31 32
