Origin and History
The Rift Realms emerged after Xu Tianming wished upon the Star Core for the Golden Dragon King’s Divine Core. The wish granted him the Divine Core and rebirth on the Douluo Continent, but the resulting catastrophe tore reality apart, corroded matter, and began assimilating life across the planes beneath the Douluo Star System 1.
The Star Core’s influence spread through the entire Douluo Star System, absorbing the wishes of living beings, distorting reality’s energy, and creating Rift Realms. These realms consume energy and matter continuously and expand “like cancer” unless eliminated 5.
Rift Realm phenomena had persisted on the continent for six years by the time of the Jingyang Mountain Range incident. Major factions, particularly the Sun Moon Empire, had developed response procedures and specialized detection soul tools, though many aspects of the realms remained unknown 16 17.
Classification
Rift Realms are divided into four known grades: small, medium, large, and enormous 16.
| Grade | Documented Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Small | Generally covers only several miles; its lord is usually between Soul King and Soul Douluo level 16 |
| Medium | Can cover one hundred miles and form stable two-way spatial passages, allowing Rift Realm Creations to enter reality in large numbers; its lord is at least Titled Douluo level 16 |
| Large | Recognized grade; no further characteristics documented. |
| Enormous | Recognized grade; no further characteristics documented. |
Characteristics
Reflection Space
A Rift Realm creates a distorted internal space known as a Reflection Space. It may replicate the terrain where it descends, but the copied environment is corrupted and detached from reality 15 16.
- Skies become dark purple and contain floating fragments of broken space, often showing incomplete forests, mountains, or lakes 15 17.
- Terrain is overgrown with dark-purple, diamond-shaped Star Crystals; trees wither, twist upward, and lose their natural color 15 16.
- Rift Realm energy slows soul-power circulation, weakens soul rings, disrupts elemental control, and erodes outsiders over time 15 16 18.
- Ordinary soul masters may eventually mutate if exposed to the realm’s erosion for too long 17.
- Spatial barriers prevent ordinary communication soul tools from contacting the outside world 16.
- Once spatial closure is complete, outside forces cannot intervene directly 18.
Core and Lord
Each Rift Realm is sustained by a central core and a corresponding Rift Realm Lord.
- Destroying ordinary Rift Realm Creations does not eliminate a realm; the lord must be killed for the core and Reflection Space to collapse 16 17.
- A newly formed Medium Rift Realm is expected to possess a Titled Douluo-level lord, though its unstable space may limit the power it can draw upon 18.
- Detection soul tools locate the strongest energy source within a realm and use its energy flow to estimate the core’s direction, but they cannot directly determine the lord’s strength 17.
- The Jingyang Mountain Range realm was an abnormal case: its core had been swallowed and fused with the Radiant Flame Dragon, causing the dragon to serve as the realm’s effective anchor and lord 22 24.
Rift Realm Creations
Rift Realm Creations are corrupted replicas of soul beasts or other lifeforms.
- Their bodies are often covered or wholly formed from dark-purple Star Crystals, with red light or black mist moving beneath the crystal layers 15 16.
- Their attacks carry corrosive effects that erode soul power and contaminate terrain with star patterns 16.
- Damaged crystal shells can regenerate, making individual creations difficult to kill outright 16.
- Creations do not use soul power; this allows soul engineers to distinguish them from soul masters and soul beasts through detection equipment 18.
- Examples encountered in Jingyang included crystallized Man-Faced Demon Spiders, Mandala Snakes, Wind Baboons, Dark Demon Tigers, and the corrupted Radiant Flame Dragon 19 21.
Destruction and Aftereffects
When a Rift Realm’s core or lord is destroyed, its Reflection Space loses its anchor and collapses 17 24.
- Star Crystals dissolve into mist, corrupted terrain returns to normal, and contaminated water and vegetation recover 24.
- The natural and spiritual energy of the surrounding area becomes denser after the realm vanishes 17 24.
- Eliminating Rift Realms may raise the Douluo Continent’s overall energy limit and benefit participants through cultivation gains or longer soul-ring lifespans 17.
- A destroyed Rift Realm returns a portion of purified Wish Power to the Star Core 5.
- Xu Tianming discovered that personally destroying a Rift Realm yields dozens of times more Wish Power than having Karna or other soul masters destroy it 26.
Jingyang Mountain Range Incident
| Event | Details |
|---|---|
| Descent | Xu Tianming wished for a first Soul Ring suited to his Sun Martial Soul. A Rift Realm immediately descended over Jingyang Mountain Range and engulfed Xu Tianming, Jing Hongchen, Meng Hongchen, and Xiao Hongchen; Shangguan Weier and Ye Guyi were caught separately nearby 14 15 16. |
| Identification | Jing Hongchen and Shangguan Weier identified it as a Newborn Medium Rift Realm whose sealed space required the destruction of its lord/core to escape 18. |
| Joint response | Jing Hongchen established a defensive Soul Guidance Array with a protective barrier and twelve automated Soul Guidance Cannons, while he and Shangguan Weier moved to locate the presumed lord 18 19. |
| Core anomaly | The Radiant Flame Dragon had swallowed the Rift Realm Core in an attempt to reach the hundred-thousand-year threshold. The core corrupted it into a dragon-crystal monster and caused it to register as the realm’s strongest energy source 21 22. |
| Collapse | The dragon voluntarily sacrificed itself to Xu Tianming before its sanity was fully consumed. Its disappearance removed the realm’s anchor, causing the Reflection Space to collapse and restoring Jingyang Mountain Range 23 24. |
