Background / History

Konoha entered the Second Shinobi World War as a major military power. Hatake Sakumo, known as Konoha’s White Fang, repeatedly inflicted devastating losses on Sunagakure forces; he killed Sasori’s parents during their secret mission near the Land of Rivers 2.

During the war’s Land of Rain campaign, Hanzō defeated Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade but spared them and bestowed the title “Konoha’s Three Ninja.” The recognition greatly increased Konoha’s prestige throughout the shinobi world 4. Konoha later withstood Sunagakure’s final offensive in the Land of Rivers through Jiraiya’s command and superior national resources, ending the Second Shinobi World War in victory 10.

In Konoha Year 43, seven-year-old Kakashi Hatake’s promotion to Chunin became a symbol of Konoha’s formidable new generation and alarmed Sunagakure’s leadership 22.

Third Shinobi World War

Sunagakure’s invasion of the Land of Rivers forced Konoha into a three-front war against Sunagakure, Iwagakure, and Kumogakure, while Kirigakure later opened a southeastern coastal front. Hiruzen Sarutobi mobilized the Three Ninja and rising shinobi including Minato Namikaze, Uchiha Fugaku, and Hyuga Hiashi to defend the Land of Fire 73.

Battle of Kikyō Mountain

Konoha deliberately withdrew in an organized manner, drawing Sunagakure’s advancing army toward Kikyō Mountain City and overextending its supply lines 91 92.

When Sunagakure began the siege, Orochimaru attacked its rear with Manda and clan forces while Minato struck the main formation through Flying Thunder God markings. Konoha’s defenders then counterattacked from the city walls, turning the siege into a three-sided encirclement 93 94.

Torifu Akimichi’s hidden reserve force, supported by the Akimichi, Nara, and Yamanaka clans, split Sunagakure’s retreating army and sealed its escape route 96 97. Fourth Kazekage Rasa ultimately ordered surrender to preserve the surviving troops 99.

Treaty with Sunagakure

Following its victory at Kikyō Mountain, Konoha imposed a treaty on Sunagakure.

Nine-Tails Rebellion

In early winter of Konoha Year 51, the Nine-Tails rampaged through Konoha under the control of an unidentified Sharingan wielder. The beast destroyed buildings, killed or injured numerous civilians and shinobi, and overwhelmed the village’s conventional defenses 133.

Hiruzen returned to the battlefield alongside ANBU and Konoha’s clans, but their coordinated techniques could not restrain the Nine-Tails. Minato arrived to rescue defenders, divert the beast, teleport away its Tailed Beast Bomb, and seal it at the cost of his life 133.

Minato’s death left Konoha devastated and created a renewed period of political vulnerability, prompting debate within Sunagakure over whether to exploit the village’s weakened condition 133 134.

Relationships

• Sunagakure — Longstanding rival and wartime enemy. Konoha defeated it in both the Second Shinobi World War and at Kikyō Mountain, then bound it through an unequal alliance treaty 10 99 101.
