Geography and Facilities

The village was originally built amid the harsh desert of the Land of Wind, with windblown sand, low stone buildings, rock-walled passages, and cavernous workspaces forming much of its landscape 1 3 6 11. Following Shaye's ecological reforms, it develops canals, windbreak forests, irrigated greenery, public squares, rooftop planting systems, and cleaner residential districts while retaining its desert-fortress foundations 159 164.

• Fourth Puppet Corps Logistics Maintenance Squad — A cavern workshop where frontline puppets are repaired, with teams handling damaged limbs, chakra circuits, poisoned components, and energy systems. Shaliu was appointed its leader after being transferred from frontline duty 1 3 4.
• Puppet Manufacturing Department — A production division responsible for constructing puppet parts. Its Limb Manufacturing Team Three teaches apprentices material handling, joint polishing, and rune engraving 24.
• Puppet Research and Development Department / Joint Development Division — A research institution that develops combat puppets, natural-energy cores, ecological puppets, industrial machinery, transportation systems, and defensive technology. History

Ancient legacy

According to Shukaku’s account, later supported in substance by Bunpuku, the Land of Wind was once fertile before the God Tree drained its energy and ancient conflicts further devastated its rivers and terrain. The region’s deserts are therefore portrayed as scars of chakra-related catastrophe rather than entirely natural wasteland 9.

This history initially shaped the village’s poverty and hostile environment, while also inspiring Shaye’s ambition to restore the Land of Wind through controlled energy use, engineering, puppetry, medicine, and sealing techniques 9 47. His later ecological projects begin reversing this legacy by producing fresh water, stabilizing sand, restoring soil, planting shelterbelts, and creating artificial oases across the country 140 158 159.

Second Shinobi World War

The Hidden Sand Village entered full logistical mobilization when the Second Shinobi World War escalated in Konoha Year 37. Logistics divisions were ordered to operate at maximum capacity to supply frontline puppets and materials, while wounded shinobi and damaged puppets returned from the battlefield 2.

Its puppet forces bore heavy losses against Konoha. Hatake Sakumo, the “White Fang,” was widely feared for inflicting devastating defeats on Sand forces, including the mission that killed Sasori’s parents 2. The repair divisions later received puppets damaged by poison, crushing impacts, and acid-like attacks, reflecting the intensity of the war 4.

In Konoha Year 40, the Third Kazekage committed the village’s remaining forces to a final offensive against Konoha, with Chiyo leading the puppet corps vanguard. The campaign failed; the village retreated, negotiated, and emerged from the war in complete defeat, having lost large numbers of shinobi, puppet masters, and families 10.

Postwar rebuilding

The defeat left the village short of personnel, resources, and morale. In Konoha Year 41, the academy began mandatory early enrollment for children of school age, treating students as urgently needed future shinobi rather than ordinary pupils 11.

The leadership also used Sasori’s talent to rebuild national pride after Konoha’s seven-year-old Kakashi Hatake became a Chunin. The Third Kazekage ordered a widespread campaign presenting Sasori as Sunagakure’s once-in-a-century puppet genius and symbol of the village’s future 22.

Third Shinobi World War and the Kazekage crisis

As border disputes and proxy conflicts escalated into the Third Shinobi World War, the village increased patrols, reconnaissance, guard missions, and border defenses despite still recovering from its earlier defeat 40 41.

The crisis worsened when the Third Kazekage disappeared during a northwestern border inspection with an elite ANBU escort. No bodies, distress signals, or battle reports were recovered, causing widespread fear and destabilizing the village’s leadership and military planning 43.

Chiyo and Ebizo imposed emergency restrictions: nonessential missions were recalled, high-risk assignments were suspended, unauthorized departure was forbidden, and the village adopted a fortress-like defensive posture 44. Once the Kazekage was officially declared missing, all regular work and missions were suspended; the gates were sealed, and every available shinobi was mobilized to search the Land of Wind 45.

The six-month search ultimately failed. Sasori had murdered the Third Kazekage and converted his body into a Human Puppet, confirming that the disappearance had been a betrayal that helped trigger Sunagakure’s political and military crisis 68 69. Rasa succeeded him as the Fourth Kazekage and formally ended the fruitless search, directing the village to recover, train, and prepare for further war 56.

Kumogakure soon exploited Sunagakure’s leaderless vulnerability by launching a coastal invasion led by the A-B Duo. The village’s front line was initially overwhelmed, but Pakura, Baki, Karura, Yashamaru, and Rasa stabilized the defense through coordinated elite intervention 52 53. Rasa’s Gold Dust halted the central assault and established him as a new symbol of Sunagakure’s strength 53 54.

The Land of Rivers campaign and defeat at Kikyō Mountain

With severe shortages, Daimyo budget cuts, and war exhaustion threatening the village’s survival, Rasa proposed invading the fertile Land of Rivers under the pretext of continuing the search for the Third Kazekage. The council approved the operation, with Chiyo commanding the frontline army and Rasa remaining responsible for homeland defense 72.

The campaign initially gained territory, resources, and momentum. Sunagakure’s forces crossed into the Land of Fire while the Sandstorm Squad and later Shaye’s Puppet Corps company conducted reconnaissance, sabotage, rescue, vanguard, and assault operations 77 89 91. Iwagakure then invaded the Land of Wind from the north, forcing Pakura to command the homeland defense while Chiyo increased pressure on Konoha’s forces 77.

Sunagakure’s offensive culminated in the siege of Kikyō Mountain City, where Konoha deliberately turned the battlefield into a trap. Orochimaru attacked the rear with Manda and clan forces, while Minato Namikaze used the Flying Thunder God Technique to devastate Sunagakure’s formations from within 93 94.

Rasa, Chiyo, Ebizo, and Shaye delayed total annihilation, but Sunagakure was decisively defeated. Rasa ordered a full retreat, and Chiyo entrusted Shaye with command of the surviving frontline Puppet Corps units as a rear guard 95. The resulting treaty forced Sunagakure into a junior alliance with Konoha, compelled its withdrawal from the Land of Rivers, and imposed enormous reparations and mission-revenue payments 101.

Hidden Mist conflict and restored dignity

The defeat at Kikyō Mountain left Sunagakure impoverished, undermanned, and vulnerable. Rasa personally mined gold with Magnet Release to finance reparations and basic operations, while weakened patrols and coastal watch stations created openings for new threats 104.

Kirigakure launched a two-pronged invasion through the Land of Rivers and the southern coast. Chiyo organized the emergency defense, assigning Pakura to intercept Ao’s land force and Shaye to command a mixed force against the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist 105.

Pakura’s Scorch Release broke Ao’s formation in the eastern desert, while Shaye’s completed humanoid Mirage held back multiple Seven Ninja Swordsmen on the southern coast 107. Shaye subsequently defeated Kushimaru Kuriarare and Munashi Jinpachi, drove Suikazan Fuguki into the sea, and routed the remaining Mist forces, while Pakura forced Ao’s troops to retreat 108.

Although Sunagakure’s initial demands for Mist reparations failed because it lacked naval reach, Shaye’s military pledge led to the construction of the seventeen-meter Gundam combat puppet 111 117 118. Shaye and Pakura used Gundam to raid and devastate Azure Reef Island, destroying its port, fleet, garrison, and military stockpiles before safely withdrawing 121 123.

The raid gave Sunagakure the strategic ability to threaten distant coastal targets. Kirigakure accepted revised treaty terms under the threat of another Gundam strike, providing Sunagakure compensation and formally ending the confrontation 125. The victory restored much of the village’s lost pride and elevated Pakura and Shaye into symbols of national recovery 127 131.

Fourth Era and national transformation

After the Third Shinobi World War ended, Sunagakure entered a new period of reconstruction under Rasa. Chiyo and Ebizo retired from direct command, Pakura retained responsibility for eastern coastal defense, Baki entered the central leadership, and Shaye became head of the expanded Research and Development Department 131 132.

Shaye’s Seawater Purifier transformed seawater into fresh water and salt, allowing East Sea Bay farmland to become productive 140 142. The resulting food production and salt trade ended the village’s chronic shortage of grain, strengthened the treasury, improved hospitals and academy equipment, and reduced dependence on warfare or external missions for survival 143 146.

The village expanded this model through the Southwestern Peninsula Grand Development Plan and the Northwestern District Ecological Transformation Plan. Ecological Puppets, Earth Release teams, infrastructure puppets, pipelines, reservoirs, shelterbelts, and salt-alkali-resistant crops converted large areas of desert into farmland, trade centers, and new settlements 145 148 158.

By the later postwar years, Sunagakure had changed from an impoverished desert fortress into a green, mechanized, commercially connected, and increasingly self-sufficient power. Its prosperity supported free academy education, family-support policies, a baby boom, expanded talent development, and stronger civilian living conditions 146 159 160.

Government and Key Figures

• Fourth Kazekage Rasa — The village’s current leader and a powerful Magnet Release user specializing in Gold Dust. He succeeded the Third Kazekage, led Sunagakure through defeat and reconstruction, later embraced Shaye’s development model, and supported the transformation of the Land of Wind 56 101 142 147.
• Third Kazekage — The former leader and Sunagakure’s strongest known Magnet Release user of his generation. He led the final offensive of the Second Shinobi World War before being murdered by Sasori and transformed into a Human Puppet 10 68.
