Background / History

Chun Zi’s death and Shaye’s birth

Shaliu’s wife, Chun Zi, died giving birth to their premature son. Elder Chiyo judged the newborn’s constitution to be congenitally deficient and warned that his future would be difficult. Shaliu nevertheless named the child Shaye and swore to raise him. 1

Chiyo removed Shaliu from frontline duty, believing that his grief and responsibility for a fragile infant made combat service too dangerous. She appointed him leader of Logistics Maintenance Squad Four, where the safer schedule allowed him to care for Shaye while managing puppet repairs. 1

Logistics service during the Second Shinobi World War

During the Second Shinobi World War, Shaliu balanced childcare with increasingly demanding logistics work. He never neglected Shaye’s feeding or care despite grief, exhaustion, and the maintenance division’s full wartime mobilization. 2

He brought Shaye to the Fourth Puppet Corps workshop rather than leave him alone. There, Shaliu built a protected corner for his son and let him observe the repair work that would shape his interest in puppetry. 3

As the war intensified, Shaliu maintained discipline among the maintenance personnel and silenced fearful gossip about Salamander Hanzo. He also handled heavily damaged, poison-corroded puppets returned from the front with extreme care. 4

Return to frontline duty

After Shaye graduated from the Academy and entered the Puppet Manufacturing Department, Shaliu applied to return to a frontline puppet-master unit. He regarded combat service as both his duty to Sunagakure and a part of his identity that he had set aside to raise Shaye. 24

During the crisis following the Third Kazekage’s disappearance, Shaliu was recalled to help establish puppet defenses around critical areas of the village. 44

He remained a frontline puppeteer through the early stages of the Third Shinobi World War, using both his combat position and longstanding logistics connections to secure difficult-to-obtain materials for Shaye’s research. 28 49

Supporting Shaye’s inventions

Shaliu became Shaye’s most reliable practical supporter. He supplied tools, blueprints, discarded parts, rare materials, funding, chakra, and physical labor without demanding full explanations of the projects. 17 28 29

He assisted Shaye’s work on the Puppet Core and Body Refining Furnace, then provided the chakra necessary to test and operate the furnace’s treatments. 29 30 31

When Shaye completed the Mirage prototype, Shaliu helped perform its final assembly. Drawing on his repair experience, he joined and secured its complex components, laid energy-conduction lines, calibrated its levitation array and thrusters, and adjusted its sensory systems. 63

Retirement and later technical work

After Shaye returned from the Land of Rivers front, Shaliu revealed that he had retired from shinobi service. Budget cuts and Sunagakure’s concentration of resources on active frontline operations had ended his military career. 85

Although retired, he remained involved in Shaye’s work. During the construction of Gundam, Shaliu led experienced Maintenance Unit veterans in processing and assembling the project’s most precise components. 117

He witnessed Gundam’s successful activation alongside Shaye, Chiyo, Ebizo, Rasa, and the maintenance craftsmen, sharing in the emotional culmination of the project. 118

Personality

Shaliu is reserved, dutiful, and deeply protective of his son. He rarely expresses affection through elaborate words; instead, he shows it through feeding Shaye, bringing him safe puppet parts, preparing suitable tools, and quietly securing materials for his experiments. 2 5 17 28

His grief over Chun Zi remains profound, but he does not allow it to prevent him from fulfilling his promise to raise Shaye. Even after Shaye becomes more independent, Shaliu remains anxious about his safety and warns him against dangerous unsupervised training. 1 16

He possesses a dry sense of humor beneath his normally serious demeanor. When Shaye became trapped halfway through Earth Release: Headhunter Jutsu, Shaliu laughed heartily before digging him out and offering practical advice. 16

Shaliu respects Shaye’s autonomy even when he cannot understand the full theory behind his inventions. Rather than hinder his son’s unconventional work, he offers trust through materials, labor, discretion, and careful warnings about danger. 29 49
