Liu Yu was a thirty-year-old mechanical and automation engineer before dying from overwork and awakening as Shaye, a premature infant in Sunagakure. Shaye's mother, Chun Zi, died giving birth to him; his father, Shaliu, named him and swore to raise him. Elder Chiyo assessed him as congenitally deficient, with a weak foundation and difficult future prospects. 1

Shaliu was transferred from frontline service to lead Logistics Maintenance Squad Four, allowing Shaye to grow up in a puppet-repair workshop. There, Shaye observed chakra circuits, puppet mechanisms, repair methods, and the practical work of the Sand Village's craftsmen.
