Background

Madara led the Uchiha Clan during the Warring States Era’s final conflict with the Senju. He was already recognized as an overwhelming warrior and the clan’s unquestioned authority, though he consistently showed restrained warmth toward his younger brothers, Izuna and Yan Hong 1.

When Yan Hong proposed infiltrating the Heno River granary, Madara initially opposed allowing his youngest brother into such danger. He ultimately approved the operation after Yan Hong insisted that he could not remain protected forever, ordering him to prioritize survival if the mission failed 1.

Madara understood that Hashirama had surpassed him in strength and anticipated that the Senju leader would seek peace after the decisive battle. His central concern was not merely defeat, but the Uchiha Clan’s eventual political marginalization under Senju-led rule 6.

Appearance

Madara is a tall, long-haired Uchiha with sharp features, a cold gaze, and an imposing presence that intimidates allies and enemies alike. He typically presents himself as a battlefield commander rather than a courtly leader.

  • Long black hair worn loose down his back 1
  • Black fitted combat clothing beneath layered red armor during the Warring States Era 1
  • Scarlet Sharingan eyes when fighting seriously 28
  • Carries the Uchiha gunbai and sickle in major battles 20
  • Later wears the white war fan symbolizing the Uchiha clan head’s position 194

Personality

Madara is proud, direct, and intolerant of disrespect. He considers most opponents unworthy of serious attention and frequently uses overwhelming force to establish the Land of Flame’s position. His response to the Raikage’s demand for accountability—openly admitting to killing the Raikage’s clansmen and challenging him to act—illustrates his contempt for intimidation 72 73.

Despite this harsh exterior, Madara is intensely protective of his family. He approved Yan Hong’s dangerous missions only after demanding that he preserve his own life, abandoned his climactic duel with Hashirama to protect the wounded Izuna, and nearly lost control upon learning that Konoha had targeted Yan Hong for assassination 1 24 60.

He is also a pragmatic leader. Madara rejected Hashirama’s proposal for a shared village because he believed centuries of bloodshed and prejudice could not be erased by idealism. Instead, he led the Uchiha out of the Land of Fire and built an independent power base in the Land of Flame 25 30.

Madara enjoys challenging combat and may deliberately prolong a battle against a worthy foe. During his fight with Byakuren, he treated the confrontation as a rare chance to fight seriously rather than an urgent struggle for survival 115.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

Madara’s dōjutsu grants him exceptional perception, genjutsu ability, and combat reactions. His Mangekyō Sharingan is the basis of his Susanoo and is powerful enough to reverse apparent defeat through mental-world manipulation.

  • Manifested a partial four-armed Susanoo capable of cutting through Hashirama’s Wood Release defenses 20
  • Used Mangekyō-based deception to survive Byakuren’s Ice Release: Ice Yan after his body appeared to be frozen and shattered 115
  • Revealed his Sharingan to terrify and immobilize Ōnoki and Iwagakure’s guards 170
  • Excessive Mangekyō use causes severe ocular strain and physical exhaustion 24

Susanoo

Madara’s Susanoo is a massive chakra construct used for offense, defense, and battlefield support.

  • Its partial form possesses four arms and can break through large-scale wooden defenses 20
  • Launches Yasaka Beads powerful enough to destroy Byakuren’s ice dragons 112
  • Propelled Yan Hong through the air to accelerate his pursuit of Shuiwu 113
  • Infused an Uchiha Cannon with Susanoo Power, creating a blue-violet beam that destroyed Hashirama’s Fivefold Rashomon 198

Chakra and Killing Intent

Madara possesses chakra powerful enough to overwhelm elite shinobi and threaten entire gatherings without directly attacking.

  • Neutralized young Hiruzen’s Fire Dragon Bullet with a casual gesture 71
  • Overpowered the First Raikage’s chakra at the Six Kage Summit, shattering the conference table and cracking the building’s floor 73
  • Restrained the Raikage from interfering in the Kumogakure–Flame Hidden Village match through chakra suppression alone 99
  • Paralyzed Iwagakure guards and left Ōnoki unable to react through killing intent 170

Taijutsu and Weapon Combat

Madara combines overwhelming physical strength with refined weapon skill.

  • Fought Hashirama with a gunbai, chain-linked sickle, and rapid combat maneuvers 20
  • Cut through nearly a hundred Shemu Clan attackers and killed the Hero’s Water-enhanced Shemu Xin in a single exchange 28
  • Caught Izuna’s attacks with ease and overwhelmed both Izuna and Yan Hong during training 67
  • Stopped Ōnoki’s Rock Fist Technique with one hand, crushed the stone construct, and broke Ōnoki’s hand 170
  • Overpowered Byakuren in close combat despite the Mizukage’s Ice Release defenses 115

Fire Release

Madara is an accomplished Fire Release user whose techniques complement his weapon and Susanoo combat.

  • Used Fire Release: Dragon Flame Song Technique against Hashirama 20
  • Combined fire attacks with close-range pressure against Byakuren 115

Military Command and Strategy

Madara commands the Uchiha through a mixture of personal authority, battlefield strength, and political realism.

  • Authorized Yan Hong’s Heno River raid while arranging Izuna’s diversionary support 1
  • Led the Uchiha withdrawal from the Land of Fire rather than accept a Senju-dominated settlement 25
  • Became Flame Hidden Village’s first Flame Shadow after the Uchiha established the Land of Flame 30
  • Recognized Hashirama’s instinct to protect his troops and exploited it during the Uchiha Cannon assault on Konoha 198
  • Treated military assistance to the Land of Earth as a territorial transaction, demanding the Lonely Mountain Wasteland in return 218

Equipment

  • Uchiha GunbaiA massive war fan used in battle; linked by a chain to a large sickle during Madara’s duel with Hashirama 20
  • Sickle — Paired with the gunbai for chained weapon attacks 20
  • Sword — Used during the Land of Waterfalls campaign and the massacre of the Shemu Clan force 28
  • Clan Head’s White War Fan — Symbol of the Uchiha clan head; Madara takes it with him when joining the war against Konoha 194
  • Uchiha Cannon — Personally augments one cannon with Susanoo Power during the assault on Konoha 198

Relationships

  • Uchiha Izuna — Younger brother and trusted battlefield partner. Madara abandons his duel with Hashirama when Izuna is critically wounded, and later trains with him and Yan Hong 24 67.
  • Uchiha Yan Hong — Youngest brother, strategist, and close confidant. Madara is fiercely protective of Yan Hong, but also trusts him with major operations and village planning 1 60 122.
  • Senju Hashirama — Former childhood friend, longtime rival, and the only figure whose requests Madara consistently acknowledges. Their relationship alternates between hostility, nostalgia, cooperation, and ideological conflict 24 64 73.
  • Senju Tobirama — Political enemy and personal adversary. Madara views Tobirama’s hostility toward Yan Hong and the Uchiha as a direct threat to his family and village 24 60.
  • Kakuzu — Financial administrator and diplomatic companion. Kakuzu accompanies Madara to Iwagakure and provides the political analysis Madara often ignores 169 170.
  • Uchiha Clan — Madara’s clan follows him out of the Land of Fire despite the uncertainty of exile, affirming his authority after their defeat by the Senju 25.
  • ŌnokiA young Iwagakure prodigy whom Madara humiliates during their first meeting, leaving him physically injured and deeply frightened 169 170.
  • Byakuren — First Mizukage and opponent during the operation to capture Shuiwu. Madara overwhelms him despite Byakuren’s ultimate Ice Release technique 112 115.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Final Senju–Uchiha War

Madara leads the Uchiha during the final battle at the East River Plains, personally confronting Hashirama while Izuna faces Tobirama. Though he deploys Susanoo and fights Hashirama at a devastating scale, Mangekyō backlash and the Uchiha army’s exhaustion force him to accept defeat after Izuna is critically injured 20 24.

Departure from the Land of Fire

Hashirama proposes that the Senju and Uchiha establish a village together. Madara rejects the offer, arguing that entrenched hatred will eventually destroy any shared settlement. He leads the Uchiha and Blood Pool clans away from their homeland to establish an independent future 25.

Founding of the Land of Flame

After securing the Land of Waterfalls, Madara becomes the first Flame Shadow of Hidden Flame Village. Under his leadership, the Uchiha transform from a defeated clan into the core of a growing shinobi state with its own military, institutions, and expansion plans 30.

Six Kage Summit

At the summit in Konoha, Madara refuses to apologize for the deaths of Yotsuki Clan members and directly challenges the Raikage. His chakra clash with the Raikage nearly destroys the conference room before Hashirama intervenes 72 73.

Capture of Shuiwu and Conflict with Kirigakure

Madara joins Yan Hong and Izuna in an ambush targeting Blood Release user Shuiwu. He overwhelms Byakuren and Kirigakure’s defenders, treating the First Mizukage as one of the few opponents capable of providing meaningful combat 112 115.

First Shinobi World War

Madara takes the field after receiving a letter from his younger brothers, leading Uchiha forces against Konoha. He later uses mass-produced Uchiha Cannons and Susanoo Power to break Hashirama’s strongest defensive formation and force Konoha’s main army into retreat 194 198.
