Personality

Ma Hongjun is initially boastful and eager to prove himself, especially before Bai Chenxiang. He attacks the Six Paths of Pain without waiting for Tang San’s direction and refuses to retreat after his flames are absorbed. 2

After being injured, he still relies heavily on his companions, placing faith in Tang San to avenge him. 4 He shows hesitation when Dai Mubai asks him to visit a brothel, worrying that Bai Chenxiang may find out, but gives in after Dai Mubai pressures him. 18 He later follows Dai Mubai’s lead in degrading Zhu Zhuqing and remains silent despite knowing the truth of Dai Mubai’s misconduct. 19 38

Story Role / Major Arcs

Ambush by the Six Paths of Pain

When the Shrek group is ambushed on the road to Hanhai City, Ma Hongjun launches the opening attack with Phoenix Meteor Shower in an attempt to impress Bai Chenxiang. The Preta Path absorbs every phoenix flame, overturning the group’s confidence. 2

He escalates with Phoenix Sky Strike, but it too is absorbed. The Asura Path then strikes him with a missile; although he avoids most of the barrage, one missile hits his back and badly burns him. 3

Bai Chenxiang catches the injured Ma Hongjun, while Oscar administers a Healing Sausage. Ma Hongjun survives and assures Bai Chenxiang that Tang San will avenge him. 4

Capture and Recovery

Despite Oscar’s treatment, Ma Hongjun is targeted again by the Deva Path and pinned to the ground by more than a dozen Black Rods. Oscar attempts to rescue him with a Copycat Mirror Sausage but is restrained as well, while Bai Chenxiang’s retaliatory attack is repelled by Almighty Push. 6

He is later described as unconscious while Tang San pleads for Xiao Wu’s soul. 8 After the Six Paths withdraw, the Black Rods restraining Ma Hongjun and the others are removed; Oscar distributes further Healing Sausages, but the group is left severely weakened and abandons its trip to Sea God Island. 10

Ma Hongjun remains seriously injured and recuperates in Jinshui City alongside Dai Mubai. 14

Jinshui City Incident

While still recovering, Ma Hongjun agrees to support the crippled Dai Mubai on a nighttime trip to find a brothel. He initially worries about Bai Chenxiang discovering them, but complies after Dai Mubai insults and pressures him. 18

He joins Dai Mubai in objectifying women and agrees to pursue Bai Chenxiang again after their planned outing. 19 Zhu Zhuqing overhears their conversation and comes to view Ma Hongjun as complicit in Dai Mubai’s contempt toward her and her clan. 21

When Tang San discovers the pair at the brothel-like establishment, Ma Hongjun agrees to a false cover story: he will claim responsibility and say Dai Mubai only accompanied him. 25 He later carelessly reveals that Dai Mubai had watched him, undermining the deception in front of Zhu Zhuqing. 28

Fracture with Bai Chenxiang and Zhu Zhuqing

During the confrontation between Zhu Zhuqing and the Shrek group, Ma Hongjun knows the truth behind Dai Mubai’s conduct but does not defend Zhu Zhuqing. 38 He recognizes that Zhu Zhuqing’s later apology conceals her real feelings. 39

Bai Chenxiang eventually slaps Ma Hongjun and condemns his behavior. He begs her not to leave, first blaming Dai Mubai’s influence before blaming his Evil Fire. 40

Relationships

• Dai Mubai — Fellow Shrek member whom Ma Hongjun treats as “Boss Dai.” He follows Dai Mubai into the Jinshui City brothel incident and helps support his false account afterward. 18 25
