Background / History

Hongjun survived the creation of the world by severing part of his own body when Pangu fought the Three Thousand Chaos Gods and Demons. The Pangu Axe nearly destroyed both his physical body and cultivation, leaving him deeply fearful of the weapon. He also previously suppressed Luo Hou. 80 82

As the Heavenly Dao's spokesperson, Hongjun seeks to control the Great Desolation by suppressing the Human Dao, Earth Dao, and threats to Heavenly Dao authority. Ling Wudao exposes this ambition during Hongjun's first confrontation with the Human Race's side. 8

Ling Wudao's future self defeats Hongjun's side during the Human Race crisis, seals him inside Zixiao Palace for ten million years, and injures him when he attempts to deduce the future self's origins with the Creation Jade Disc. 9 While imprisoned, Hongjun continues directing Taiqing and Yuanshi, intending to use the Demon Race's recovery and the Human Race's destruction to further his plans. 39

After breaking the seal centuries later, Hongjun gathers the Four Sages, Di Jun, and Taiyi to support a renewed Demon Race assault on the Human Race. He promises to personally suppress Ling Wudao if the Human Emperor intervenes. 74 76 Ling Wudao defeats what appears to be Hongjun in their ensuing battle, but Hongjun escapes by using a prepared clone as a substitute. 81 84

Hongjun later attempts to prevent Houtu from establishing the Underworld, sending his Three Corpses to attack the Human Race as a diversion. Although Ling Wudao seemingly kills him with talismans, Hongjun survives through another substitute and returns to Zixiao Palace. 91 93 94

During the Witch and Demon War, Hongjun intends for both races to destroy one another so he can become the ultimate ruler of the Great Desolation. Houtu reverses his attempt to imprison her by trapping him within the Six Paths of Reincarnation Domain. 115 116 Ling Wudao strengthens Houtu's domain to the Great Dao level, leaving Hongjun unable to send messages or escape freely. 120

Hongjun's later efforts focus on reclaiming control of the Heavenly Court, manipulating the Heavenly Dao Four Sages, and eventually devouring the Heavenly Dao itself. He escapes a combined attack at the Heavenly Court by using the World Extinguishing Millstone, then attempts to corrupt Taiqing and Yuanshi through black energy hidden in the Immortal Dao Domain. 136 158 160

Personality

Hongjun is calculating, patient, and intensely power-driven. He structures calamities, conflicts, and alliances around a single objective: gaining absolute control over the Great Desolation and ultimately the Heavenly Dao itself. 39 91 116 158

He is also cautious when directly confronted by superior power. Hongjun retreats from the Pangu Axe because of his experience during the creation of the world, relies on clones and substitutes to survive apparent death, and repeatedly escapes rather than accept a final defeat. 82 84 94 136

Despite repeated setbacks, Hongjun remains persistent. His failures against Ling Wudao, Houtu, and Nüwa only cause him to accelerate new schemes, including the corruption of his own disciples and an attempt to devour the Heavenly Dao. 103 104 160 202
