Nature and Awakening
A Martial Soul is the foundation of a Soul Master’s cultivation and combat style. A Soul Master may awaken with innate Soul Power of varying levels; documented examples range from Zhu Zhuqing’s level-seven innate Soul Power to Innate Full Soul Power. 2 29
- Martial Souls can be inherited through clans, such as the Star Luo Imperial Family’s White Tiger and the Zhu Clan’s Netherworld Civet. 33
- Great clans raise Soul Beasts suited to their inherited Martial Souls, allowing direct descendants to receive established Soul Ring configurations and identical early Soul Skills. 33
- A Martial Soul’s quality strongly affects a Soul Master’s potential, though cultivation, Soul Rings, combat experience, and compatibility remain significant. 2 35
- Before level 30, Beast Martial Souls generally provide greater physical enhancement than Tool Martial Souls. 12
Types and Documented Traits
| Type / Example | Documented traits |
|---|---|
| Beast Martial Soul | Enhances the user’s body through Spirit Avatar; examples include the Soft-Boned Rabbit, Netherworld Civet, and Mighty Vajra Bear. 11 26 34 |
| Tool Martial Soul | Includes Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass and Jiang Li’s Summoning Grimoire; Tool Martial Souls do not inherently provide the same early physical enhancement as Beast Martial Souls. 12 35 |
| Special-type Tool Martial Soul | The Summoning Grimoire can summon and borrow contracted Martial Souls, making it an unusual Tool Martial Soul. 35 |
| Healing-type Martial Soul | Ye Lingling’s Nine-Heart Begonia is a purely healing Martial Soul with no combat power. 41 |
| Godly Martial Soul | Qian Renxue’s Dark Six-Winged Angel is described as a top-tier Godly Martial Soul with dark-element power and a domain. 3 |
| Inherited clan Martial Soul | The White Tiger and Netherworld Civet possess standardized early Soul Skills due to generations of clan-developed Soul Ring arrangements. 33 |
Spirit Avatar
A Spirit Avatar manifests a Martial Soul’s phantom and merges it into the Soul Master’s body, granting the traits of that Martial Soul. 3 11 26
- Dark Six-Winged Angel — grants physical strength comparable to a level-20 Beast Soul Master even without a Soul Ring, corrosive dark-element attacks, and a short-range domain. 3
- Soft-Boned Rabbit — provides exceptional flexibility, allowing Jiang Li to restrain Tang San’s arms and evade a Sleeve Arrow. 11 12
- Earthly Origin Civet — emphasizes reaction speed and claw attacks; its black Soul Power can adhere to targets and detonate after being accumulated. 35 36
- Heavenly Origin Civet — greatly enhances strength and produces restorative white Soul Power when its user is injured. 28
Soul Rings and Soul Skills
Soul Rings are acquired from defeated Soul Beasts and allow Soul Masters to advance their Soul Power and obtain or strengthen Soul Skills. 5 6
- Soul Ring absorption requires a Soul Master to withstand the ring’s power; pursuing an excessively old ring can greatly increase the risk of death for little additional benefit. 1
- Major age thresholds include hundred-year, thousand-year, and ten-thousand-year Soul Rings. 1
- A Soul Master’s first Soul Ring is commonly considered optimal at roughly four hundred years, rather than an exact fixed age. 1
- The standard optimal Soul Ring configuration is described as two yellow, two purple, and five black rings. 3
- The fifth Soul Ring is ordinarily the first Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Ring a Soul Master can absorb and marks a major cultivation threshold. 29
- Soul Sages at level 70 obtain Martial Soul True Body through their seventh Soul Skill, allowing even an ordinary Soul Master at that realm to wield 200% of their strength. 35
Martial Soul Evolution
Martial Soul evolution can fundamentally alter a Martial Soul’s form and abilities. It is usually associated with obtaining a Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Ring or several mutually compatible Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Rings. 27
- Evolution normally affects low- or middle-grade Martial Souls; high-grade Martial Souls rarely evolve. 27
- Jiang Li’s contracts unexpectedly evolved Zhu Zhuyun and Zhu Zhuqing’s high-grade Netherworld Civets. 27
- Zhu Zhuyun evolved into the white Heavenly Origin Civet, gaining a major strength increase and injury-triggered healing. 27 28
- Zhu Zhuqing evolved into the black Earthly Origin Civet, gaining increased speed, attack, defense, and corrosive black Soul Power. 27 28
Martial Soul Fusion Skills
A Martial Soul Fusion Skill combines compatible Martial Souls and can create power greater than the sum of its users. 37
| Fusion type | Requirements and effects |
|---|---|
| Martial Soul Fusion Skill | Fully merges Martial Souls and Soul Skills; it is the strongest fusion type and generally depends on rare, innate compatibility rather than deliberate training. 37 |
| Martial Soul Technique Fusion | Can be developed by Soul Masters with similar Martial Souls, matching Soul Ring sources, and prolonged joint training. 37 |
| Soul Power Fusion Skill | Temporarily transfers multiple users’ Soul Power into one person; it requires mutual understanding but may overwhelm a body unable to bear the added power. 37 |
Twin Civet
The Heavenly Origin Civet and Earthly Origin Civet can fuse into the black-and-white Twin Civet, a giant panda-like beast. 29 37
- Zhu Zhuyun and Zhu Zhuqing first formed the Twin Civet after agreeing to set aside enough of their resentment to attempt fusion. 29
- Zhu Zhuqing’s lower Soul Power and incomplete compatibility initially limited the fusion’s duration and left her severely exhausted. 29
- Zhu Zhuyun stated that the fused form could contend with Soul Masters below level 50. 29
- Jiang Li later fused his borrowed Earthly Origin Civet with Zhu Zhuyun’s Heavenly Origin Civet to attack Zhao Wuji. 37 38
Special Case: Summoning Grimoire
Jiang Li’s Summoning Grimoire is a Martial Soul with three primary functions: summoning, contracts, and space. 3 4
Contracts
A being that willingly signs its name in the Grimoire can be contracted, allowing Jiang Li to borrow its Martial Soul power. Soul Masters and Soul Beasts can both enter contracts. 3
- If a contractor is weaker than Jiang Li, he can borrow all of their power. 3
- If a contractor is stronger, he can only borrow power equivalent to his own level. 3
- The Grimoire initially had one contract slot, occupied by Qian Renxue; Jiang Li gained another slot after obtaining his first Soul Ring. 3 6
- Contracted Martial Souls are recorded on dedicated pages in the Grimoire and can be summoned independently before merging with Jiang Li through Spirit Avatar. 26 31
- Jiang Li’s first Soul Ring did not grant a unique skill of its own; instead, it enabled him to use the Soul Skills of contracted Spirits. 6
Summoning Space
The Summoning Space functions similarly to a Storage Soul Tool but can contain living beings. 4
- The space appears vast, but most of its landscape is illusory; initially, only an area of roughly ten square meters was physically real. 4
- It expands as Jiang Li’s Soul Power increases and may eventually develop into an independent world. 4
- Jiang Li used it to safely absorb his first Soul Ring inside the Soul Hunting Forest. 5
Effect on Transformed Soul Beasts
Xiao Wu’s contract produced a special result because she is a Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Beast in human form. 15
- The Grimoire absorbed the hidden power she could not safely use in human society, making her appear as a genuine human and concealing her Soul Beast identity from ordinary detection. 15
- Her power can gradually return as Soul Rings when she advances alongside Jiang Li. 15
- Jiang Li concealed from Xiao Wu that, if she died, she would become a soul attached to the Summoning Grimoire rather than leaving behind a Soul Ring or Soul Bone. 15
