Background / History

Itachi initially served as the Uchiha Clan’s connection to Konoha’s leadership during the impending coup. He remained outwardly respectful before Hiruzen, Danzō, Koharu, and Homura, but was internally divided between his clan and the village. Hiruzen’s promise of a peaceful solution briefly gave him hope. 1

Before he could act, Fugaku—being impersonated by Takuya—placed him under Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, extracted both of his Mangekyō Sharingan, and had his chakra sealed. Takuya accused him of informing Hiruzen about the Uchiha coup and imprisoned him in the secret chamber beneath Naka Shrine. 2 3

After the coup succeeded and Konoha’s former leadership was killed, Itachi struggled to accept that the village had not fallen into civil war. He surrendered Shisui’s remaining Mangekyō Sharingan in exchange for replacement eyes, then received a pair of Three-Tomoe Sharingan from Hideki. 20 21 22

Itachi is a teenage Uchiha distinguished by the two tear troughs beneath his eyes, which make him appear more mature than his age. 1

His early allegiance is defined by a painful desire to prevent conflict between Konoha and the Uchiha. After learning that the coup did not destroy the village, he gradually accepts Takuya’s new order while preserving Shisui’s ideal of protecting Konoha’s peace. 20 121

He also demonstrates practical compassion. When Takuya proposes killing Deidara as a future threat, Itachi argues that sealing Deidara’s chakra and imprisoning him is preferable. 201 As a leader, he keeps volatile allies focused, chooses to defend the Uchiha household when its rear guard is vulnerable, and limits sensitive information when others press him about Naruto’s plans. 133 134
