Background
Haku lost all of his relatives as a child. He was later taken in by Momochi Zabuza, becoming a rogue ninja and accompanying him through a life of violence and uncertainty 5 68.
In the Land of Waves, Naruto initially mistook Haku for a beautiful young woman and brought him to Chen Feng for divination. Chen Feng foresaw a bloody calamity and advised Haku to remain hidden for a month, but Haku declined to run from his fate 5. He subsequently fought Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke on Zabuza’s orders, easily incapacitating all three before revealing his identity to Naruto 6.
Haku deployed Ice Release against Team 7, trapping them in Demonic Mirror Ice Crystals and bombarding them with senbon. Xiao Meng’s World Losing Color interrupted the technique, leaving Haku unable to continue the assault 7. After Zabuza was critically wounded by Kakashi, Haku broke down in tears and remained at his side. Xiao Meng stabilized Zabuza’s condition, though his injuries were expected to leave him crippled 9.
According to Haku’s later recollection, Zabuza took his own life several months after the Land of Waves battle. Haku honored Zabuza’s final wish by returning his remains to the Land of Water and burying him outside the Hidden Mist Village 68. There, Haku discovered that the Bloody Mist policy had ended and that Chen Feng had become the village’s Taoist chief adviser. After meeting Chen Feng again, Haku joined the Taoist School and converted his Ice Release Chakra into Icy True Qi 68.
Appearance
Haku is a fair-skinned, handsome young man whose appearance is repeatedly described as gentle and beautiful. By the time he lives near the Hidden Mist Village, he appears around eighteen or nineteen years old 68.
- Smooth black hair that falls to his shoulders 68
- A soft, gentle smile and a calm manner 68 79
- Previously concealed his face behind a mask while working with Zabuza 6
- Was readily mistaken for a woman by Naruto because of his appearance 5 6
Personality
Haku is polite, compassionate, and deeply loyal to those he considers important. His attachment to Zabuza was so absolute that he felt his own life would lose meaning if Zabuza died 9. He nevertheless accepts hardship with unusual calm, refusing Chen Feng’s suggestion to hide from his predicted disaster because he would not abandon his chosen path 5.
After returning to the Land of Water, Haku rejects Mei Terumi’s offer to make him Anbu captain, having grown weary of a shinobi life defined by killing. He finds greater peace in Taoist cultivation and in his friendship with Isobu 68. Though gentle in disposition, he becomes decisive when protecting allies or confronting enemies, as shown by his challenge to Suigetsu and his battles against Kakuzu and Han 81 84 88.
Abilities & Skills
Ice Release and Icy True Qi
Haku possesses the Ice Release bloodline limit. After joining the Taoist School, his Ice Release Chakra is transformed into Icy True Qi, strengthening his techniques and removing the need for hand seals 68 82.
- Creates Demonic Mirror Ice Crystals to surround targets with mirrored ice constructs 7.
- Uses Thousand Kill Water Needles to form massive volleys of senbon from water vapor 7.
- Freezes Water Gun Technique projectiles into ice pellets before they can reach him 82.
- Creates ice walls, ice arrows, ice spears, and wide-area freezing waves 82 85.
- His cold attacks can freeze both an opponent’s body and their internal Chakra circulation 82.
- Can extinguish fire-based attacks through overwhelming cold and pierce elemental constructs with condensed ice 85.
Ice Armor and Hidden Strength
Haku can manifest Icy Armor around his body and reinforce his physical combat with Tai Chi Fist and Chen Feng’s Hidden Strength technique 88.
- The armor absorbs direct physical damage, though it can crack under sufficiently powerful blows 88.
- Hidden Strength allows Icy True Qi to penetrate external defenses and damage internal organs 84 88.
- Used this combination to shatter one of Kakuzu’s hearts through a direct palm strike 84.
- Used Tai Chi Fist against the Five-Tails Jinchūriki Han, though he is noted to be less proficient in the style than Chen Feng 88.
Ice Spiral
Haku developed the Ice Spiral under Chen Feng’s guidance, drawing on the principles of the Rasengan while altering its form for greater penetration and freezing power 85.
- Combines rotating force, Icy True Qi, and extreme cold into a cone-shaped drilling attack 85.
- Overpowered Kakuzu’s lightning attack, shattered his final mask, and pierced his chest, killing him 85.
Three-Tails Jinchūriki
Haku becomes the jinchūriki of the Three-Tails Isobu after willingly accepting Chen Feng’s sealing method 69 72.
- Isobu’s water-aspected power is exceptionally compatible with Haku’s Icy True Qi 82.
- Converts the Three-Tails’ Chakra directly into True Qi rather than relying solely on a standard tailed-beast cloak 88.
- Can manifest a giant Three-Tails phantom around himself 89.
- Fires Ice Tailed Beast Balls that merge freezing power with Yin–Yang Chakra 89 114.
- Helped Naruto block a Ten-Tails energy beam with a giant tortoise shell 113.
- Retains control over whether Isobu may leave the seal, rather than permanently imprisoning the beast 69 72.
Relationships
- Chen Feng — Haku’s master and the person who brought him into the Taoist School. Chen Feng supports Haku’s decision to become Isobu’s jinchūriki and personally performs the seal 68 69 72.
- Momochi Zabuza — Haku’s former master, benefactor, and the person he considered his only family. Haku remained devoted to Zabuza after his crippling injuries and later returned his remains to the Land of Water 9 68.
- Isobu / “Little Grey” — Haku’s close companion and later his tailed beast. Their trust predates the sealing, and Haku treats Isobu as a friend rather than a weapon 68 69.
- Naruto Uzumaki — Naruto was fond of Haku before learning his gender and allegiance to Zabuza. They later fight alongside one another against the Ten-Tails 5 6 113.
- Mei Terumi — The Fifth Mizukage initially distrusts Haku because of his rogue-ninja past and Taoist School affiliation, but ultimately permits his sealing as the Three-Tails’ host 68 69.
- Hōzuki Suigetsu — Haku defeats Suigetsu in a duel, freezing him completely before accepting his surrender and bringing him into Chen Feng’s group 81 82.
- Uzumaki Karin — Karin rescues Haku from Zabuza during his attempt to free Yakushi Kabuto, acting under Chen Feng’s orders 81.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Three-Tails Succession
Haku lives peacefully with Isobu near the Hidden Mist Village until Chen Feng identifies him as the ideal new Three-Tails host. Haku agrees only after consulting Isobu, and the sealing is completed without major difficulty because of their mutual trust 68 69 72.
Recruitment of Suigetsu
After proposing that Suigetsu join Chen Feng’s group, Haku accepts a duel to settle the matter. He overwhelms Suigetsu’s Water Gun Technique and Hōzuki Secret Technique with Icy True Qi, ultimately freezing him into an ice sculpture and securing his surrender 81 82.
Battles Against Akatsuki and Hidden Stone
Haku destroys Kakuzu’s hearts with Icy True Qi and Hidden Strength before killing him with the Ice Spiral 84 85. During the conflict with Hidden Stone, he battles the Five-Tails Jinchūriki Han, counters Han’s Steam Armor with internal freezing damage, and freezes him through an Ice Tailed Beast Ball clash 88 89.
Ten-Tails War
Haku fights alongside Naruto and the Taoist Alliance against the Ten-Tails. He helps defend against its attacks and later freezes the creature’s head with an Ice Tailed Beast Ball, creating an opening for the allied forces 113 114.
Pirate World Journey
Chen Feng chooses Haku as his sole companion when traveling to the pirate world, citing Haku’s strength, lack of binding ties, and compatibility with the ocean as Isobu’s host 122. He cultivates in Cherry Blossom Hell, where the environment is especially suited to Icy True Qi 136. Haku later freezes Crocodile and strikes with a Tailed Beast Ball, though Crocodile escapes with severe injuries 142.
Return to the Shinobi World
Haku returns to the Naruto world with Chen Feng after years at sea. Although he recognizes it as his true home, he is astonished to find the Land of Fire transformed by modern roads, factories, and railways 195.
Trivia
- Haku calls Isobu “Little Grey,” a name Chen Feng suggested jokingly because of the Three-Tails’ grey shell 68.
- Haku’s name and appearance caused Naruto to mistake him for a girl during their first meeting 5.
- A later account depicts Zabuza pursuing Haku after Haku frees Yakushi Kabuto, despite Haku’s earlier recollection that Zabuza died years before this event 68 81.
