History

Ancient role

Azure Moon Sect is a major Great Li power with a long-standing military and political role. It fought for the dynasty during a past national calamity, earning the imperial family's protection as a crucial fighting force 189.

Six to seven thousand years before the sect's destruction, the sect became responsible for sealing the remains of an incompletely destroyed Demonic Sect Master within its deepest forbidden ground. This responsibility later allowed Cangming True Lord to pressure Zhao Xuankong and Mo Bufan into aiding the sect during Su Yueli's attack 194.

Shen Huai'an's recruitment and the village massacre

Shen Huai'an was taken from a mortal village near Fengling City after the sect identified his Supreme Heavenly Bone. He was elevated to Young Sect Master because of his extraordinary talent 22 91.

To sever Shen Huai'an's mortal attachments and cultivate an emotionless Dao Heart, Shen Tianzhou and Lu Kuangsheng ordered the annihilation of his home village. The massacre killed Shen Qing'an, Su Yueli's master Lu Chen, and the other villagers; the sect concealed the event by telling Shen Huai'an that his brother died of illness and that the village was destroyed by demonic beasts 183 188 194.

Activities before the sect's fall

The sect maintained inner disciples, Pill Peak, bounty missions, and a substantial supply of cultivation resources. Qi Feng, an inner disciple, joined the hunt for the Earthsplitter Bear in Black Wind Valley and later used his rewards to obtain martial-artist pills for Su Yueli 51 56 58.

Its wealth was displayed at the Myriad Treasures Trading House auction, where Elder Zhao purchased the Purple-Gold Eight-Trigram Furnace for 800 Superior Spirit Stones as a gift for Shen Huai'an 69.

After Shen Huai'an reached the Sixth Realm, the sect master sent him to the Great Li Imperial City for the Martial Artists' Tournament and Cultivators' Tournament. Two Ninth Realm elders accompanied him as guards 87.

Destruction

Su Yueli arrived at the sect centuries later to demand accountability for the village massacre. When denied access to Shen Huai'an, she bypassed the outer formation and killed three inner sect elders with a release of Fourteenth Realm pressure 182.

Sect Master Shen Tianzhou and Grand Elder Lu Kuangsheng initially attempted to negotiate, but ordered an attack once Su Yueli exposed the massacre. The sect's elders, formations, and senior leadership were overwhelmed by her Martial Dao strength 183 184.

Cultivation through severing mortal ties

The sect's leadership treated Shen Huai'an's mortal attachments as obstacles to his cultivation. Lu Kuangsheng and Shen Tianzhou arranged the massacre of Shen Huai'an's village so that he could cultivate a more ruthless and emotionless Dao Heart 183 188.

The crime was hidden from both the wider cultivation world and Shen Huai'an himself. The sect's leaders feared that exposure would destroy its thousand-year reputation and give rival factions cause to suppress it 188 194.

Preference for talent and sect legacy

The sect invested immense resources in Shen Huai'an, including decades of secluded cultivation, spiritual medicine, personal Ninth Realm guards, and a legendary pill furnace 69 87.

Cangming True Lord considered Shen Huai'an's advancement more important than the deaths of Shen Tianzhou and other senior members, viewing the Young Sect Master's potential as the sect's path to survival 190.

Aftermath

The battle reduced the sect's mountain gate, halls, and surrounding peaks to ruins. Its formation was drained, its sect master and Grand Elder were killed, and its remaining members scattered 192 198.

After Su Yueli left, the survivors attempted to rally around Shen Huai'an. Unbeknownst to them, Motian Xing had forcibly possessed him; their hope of rebuilding Azure Moon Sect ended when he used them as fuel for a demonic formation 198 199.
