Background / History

Mocha was Kate Garcia’s closest friend and personal lawyer. After Kate and Wei An died in a car accident, he handled the estate’s legal matters for Kate’s son, Ryan Garcia, including inheritance taxes, insurance compensation, and the transfer of the family home. He also had strong opinions about the accident, blaming Wei An for indirectly causing Kate’s death despite Rose’s insistence that it was simply an accident. 6

When Ryan began claiming amnesia, Mocha immediately noticed that his behavior had changed. He arranged a hospital examination, remained concerned after the diagnosis of probable psychogenic amnesia, and continued helping even after learning Ryan had briefly hired another lawyer out of distrust. 5 7

Mocha ultimately agreed to arrange Ryan’s guardianship of Annie despite believing Ryan was too young and unstable to raise her alone. He warned Ryan that public scrutiny, child-protection groups, or reporters could challenge the arrangement if Ryan appeared unfit. 6

Over the following decade, Mocha remained a trusted legal adviser and family elder. He pursued legal action against Kron, assisted Ryan’s acquisition of a publishing house, and arranged testing for a blood sample Ryan claimed was unusual. 13 16

As Ryan’s conflict with the Haulers Group shareholders escalated, Mocha became increasingly alarmed by the danger to Ryan and Annie. Ryan eventually disclosed a deliberately altered account of his interworld activities and magical ability to him, demonstrating the claim by conjuring lightning. Mocha accepted the explanation and supported Ryan’s decision to retaliate against the people who had targeted Annie. 40 41

During the later war involving Ryan and Nazarick, Mocha’s home was destroyed and civilians were killed. Furious over the devastation and Ryan’s role in it, he became a reminder of the personal and human cost of Ryan’s actions. Ryan subsequently ordered that Mocha and Rose be temporarily moved to Nazarick’s world; both had returned to Earth by the time Ryan revisited his former home. 73 96

Personality

Mocha is blunt, observant, and intensely practical. He is deeply protective of Ryan and Annie, whom he and Rose effectively treat as family. Mocha’s anger over Ryan’s conflict with the Haulers Group shareholders is driven by fear that Ryan and Annie will be targeted, not concern over lost profits. 39 40

Although initially skeptical of Ryan’s decisions, Mocha supports him once convinced that Ryan has prepared properly. After witnessing Ryan create lightning with magic, he shifts from urging restraint to backing Ryan’s plan to remove the conspirators who targeted Annie. 41

Mocha’s protectiveness does not override his moral outrage. Having lived in the United States since childhood and feeling strongly attached to it, he is enraged by the destruction of his home and the civilian deaths caused during the war surrounding Ryan and Nazarick. 73
