Background / History

Annie became part of Ryan Garcia's family when her mother married Ryan's father. Three months later, both adults died in a car accident, leaving Annie and Ryan as the only members of the newly formed household. Ryan became her legal guardian, while Annie feared that he would send her to an orphanage or take her inheritance. 1

After Ryan claimed to have amnesia, Annie cautiously explained their situation to him. With no trustworthy relatives in either China or the United States, she eventually accepted his offer to act as her guardian and treat her as his younger sister. Their first shared meal marked the beginning of their chosen family. 2

Annie quickly proved unusually intelligent and independent. She had taught herself material through fifth grade and objected to being treated as an ordinary child, leading Ryan to promise that he would respect her judgment while continuing to protect her. 4

Over the following decade, Annie remained Ryan's closest family member despite his growing business empire and increasingly frequent absences. When Ryan prepared for dangerous interworld travel, she noticed his weapons training and survival preparations, fearing that she would become a burden or lose him. 8 9 11

Following her kidnapping, Annie chose to seek strength rather than remain dependent on Ryan's protection. She underwent accelerated martial and magical training under Demiurge, whom she initially believed to be a mysterious demon hunter and exorcist master. 27 33 48

Ryan's eventual disclosure revealed that Nazarick, Demiurge, and Annie's supposed miraculous encounter had all been connected to him. Though devastated by ten years of deception, Annie accepted his assurance that she was genuinely his sister and Nazarick's princess. 49 50

Her first visit to Nazarick shook her expectations of a beautiful magical kingdom. Learning that its inhabitants included undead, demons, vampires, insects, and other races widely regarded as monstrous caused her to question both Nazarick and Ryan's identity, though she did not immediately reject either of them. 55

Personality

Annie is observant, skeptical, and difficult to deceive. Even as a child, she questioned whether Ryan's guardianship would benefit him and later noticed inconsistencies in the fabricated story surrounding her supposed encounter with an exorcist master. 2 33

She strongly values independence. Rather than accept protection passively, she repeatedly insists on understanding danger, helping Ryan, and gaining the strength to protect herself. This drive becomes especially intense after her kidnapping and the deaths of her bodyguards. 11 22 40

Her loyalty to Ryan is central to her decisions. She initially agrees to abandon personal revenge because she recognizes that her life matters to him, but continues training so she can eventually stand beside him rather than remain someone he must protect. 27 41 48

Annie's grief can harden into vengefulness. Britney Joz's betrayal and the sacrifice of her guards leave her determined to personally punish those responsible, though she remains concerned for the families of the people who died protecting her. 19 22 27

Although she can be cold and ruthlessly decisive toward enemies, Annie retains a strong protective instinct toward victims of violence and exploitation. The Viper Gang's trafficking and abuse of women provoke particular outrage, motivating her campaign to eradicate its network and later eliminate other criminal gangs. 101 113 128

Annie is increasingly politically perceptive. She recognizes that heroic reputation can be manipulated by governments and media, understands Ryan's intention to use a hero organization as a source of public influence, and insists that the League of Heroes must remain independent of Earthly governments. 105 170 220

While she publicly maintains a controlled and aloof demeanor, Annie is considerably warmer with Ryan and her Nazarick companions. She later admits that she does not always wish for Ryan to see her as merely his younger sister, leaving her feelings toward him emotionally complicated. 170 217 220

Story Role / Major Arcs

Orphaned Ward

Following the deaths of her mother and Ryan's father, Annie becomes Ryan's legal responsibility. Her initial suspicion gradually gives way to a sibling-like bond built through domestic routines, mutual teasing, and Ryan's commitment to keep her from being abandoned again. 1 2 4

Kidnapping and Loss

Ten years later, Annie is targeted as leverage against Ryan. Betrayed by Britney Joz and ambushed by Hydra-linked attackers, she survives through a desperate counterattack while her guards die protecting her. The experience leaves her traumatized and determined to avenge them. 17 19 22

Revenge and Training

Annie demands the right to participate in retaliation, eventually accepting Ryan's condition that she first prove herself against a security operative. Ryan secretly arranges for Demiurge to train her, seeking to balance his desire to protect her with his belief that she must become independent. 27 33

Princess of Nazarick

After Ryan's identity is exposed, Annie discovers that Demiurge's training, the supposed exorcist encounter, and much of her recent life were arranged by Ryan. Hurt by the deception, she briefly considers leaving, but remains after Ryan identifies her as his true sister and Nazarick's princess. 48 49

Journey to Nazarick

Annie learns the scale of Nazarick's power and becomes troubled by Ryan's threat against Earth. Despite her fears for Mocha, Rose, and other people on Earth, she agrees to visit Nazarick through the World Portal and is formally escorted there by Demiurge. 50

Upon arriving in Nazarick, Annie is formally introduced to Cocytus as Ryan's younger sister and Nazarick's future princess. Demiurge's deliberately frightening explanation of Nazarick's monstrous residents overwhelms her, leading her to withdraw to the Royal Suite while reconsidering what Ryan and Nazarick truly are. 55

Superhero Aspirations

Ryan proposes that Annie become a superhero, and she accepts immediately once she believes doing so may help him. After returning to Earth, she trains until reaching the physical standard of a level-twenty warrior and begins seeking opportunities to act as a genuine hero rather than a manufactured symbol. 79 97

Her first major vigilante campaign begins in Hell's Kitchen, where she confronts the Viper Gang. The gang's trafficking, forced addiction, and exploitation of women provoke Annie into systematically destroying its hideouts and pursuing its leader. 100 101 102

Viper Gang and Hydra Reckoning

Annie's pursuit of Viper brings her into limited cooperation with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Natasha Romanoff. She uses S.H.I.E.L.D.'s intelligence while demanding action against corrupt officials connected to the gang, then independently follows Hydra's invitation to the Wright Factory. 104 113 124

At the factory, Hydra presents Viper and Britney as bargaining pieces. Annie kills Viper, refuses to let Britney escape responsibility through suicide, and consults Ryan when Hydra offers its S.H.I.E.L.D.-embedded branch's defection to Nazarick. After Ryan rejects the proposal, Annie eliminates the members responsible for her kidnapping, achieving the revenge she had pursued since the factory ambush. 125 126

Scarlet Girl and the League of Heroes

Annie publicly demonstrates her superhero abilities while defending civilians during an attack on Stark Group's temporary headquarters. Working alongside Iron Man, she protects bystanders, bypasses an alien energy shield, disarms the attackers' explosive weapons, and earns wider recognition as the Scarlet Girl. 129 130 220

As public opinion turns against her and Tony Stark through government-backed propaganda, Annie realizes that individual reputation is insufficient without institutional power. She supports the formation of the League of Heroes, assists with its political and public-relations burdens, and argues that it must remain independent rather than become subordinate to any government or organization. 170 220

Trivia

  • Ryan's fabricated “miraculous encounter” cast Annie as a new generation of exorcist and Demiurge as her mysterious master. 33
  • Although shocked by Demiurge's true demonic appearance, she retains the title “Teacher” because he guided her into the supernatural world. 50
  • Annie initially misunderstands Aura's claim that a grenade could injure her, not realizing that Aura's durability is far beyond ordinary human standards. 103
  • Her public title, “Scarlet Girl,” is associated with the bloodshed of her vigilante actions rather than her appearance. 220
  • She stores a Pteranodon Devil Fruit but has not eaten it because Ryan warns her that Devil Fruits possess serious weaknesses. 217
