Younger cloned body 181 Clones his younger self and transfers his entire soul into the new body. Retains overwhelming killing intent but cannot return to his original body for three years. His registration as a Genin is a cover identity, not a documented loss of strength.

Background / History

Orochimaru came from Konoha and studied under Hiruzen Sarutobi. Hiruzen regarded him as his favorite disciple and, despite having an opportunity to kill him during his defection, could not bring himself to do so 99 115.

During the Second Shinobi World War, Orochimaru fought on the Amegakure battlefield and nearly died to Hanzo’s Explosive Flame Formation. He also encountered the children who would become Nagato’s companions; when meeting Pain years later, he recognizes Yahiko’s body 9 11 51.

His pursuit of immortality arose from witnessing death, aging, illness, and the loss of loved ones. He did not blame Konoha or enemy shinobi for his parents’ deaths, instead viewing all sides as acting under the pressures of survival and war. Konoha remained both a cherished homeland and a cage restricting his ambitions 98.

While serving Root, he entered a mutually exploitative arrangement with Danzō. He transplanted Sharingan and Hashirama Cells into Danzō to investigate Izanagi, accepting half of Danzō’s collected Sharingan as payment 50.

Before defecting, Orochimaru recruited the war orphan Yakushi Kabuto as a trusted subordinate. He subsequently maintained bases across the five great ninja nations and established a headquarters in the Land of Rice, where he intended to found his own ninja village 7 45.

Appearance

Orochimaru’s first direct appearance emphasizes his long hair, serpentine eyes, and an elegant, unsettling beauty 9.

  • Eyes: Golden vertical pupils framed by purple eyeshadow extending toward his nose 9.
  • Accessories: Blue-green, magatama-shaped earrings 9.
  • Voice: Hoarse and raspy, often paired with cultured, measured speech 9 181.
  • Serpentine traits: A long tongue, snake-like arms, and the ability to replace his lower body with a snake’s tail 9 10 121.
  • Eight Branches form: An enormous white serpent with eight heads and eight tails; his humanoid body can emerge from one head’s mouth 123.
  • Chunin Exams body: A clone of his younger self, presented publicly as his supposed son 181.

Personality

Orochimaru values truth enough to risk his life for it. At Heaven-Earth Bridge, the Rinnegan fascinates him so intensely that he attacks despite Kabuto’s warnings and remains eager to investigate after being violently repelled. When Nagato reveals Madara’s connection to the eyes, the promise of understanding their origin stops Orochimaru from stealing them 9 10.

His intellectual curiosity coexists with ruthlessness. He treats bodies, bloodlines, souls, and forbidden techniques as research material, and later admits that Nagato’s protection alone prevented Kimimaro, Jūgo, and the Guardian Pavilion’s children from becoming his test subjects 12 13 181.

He nevertheless retains meaningful attachments. He rescues Kabuto from Sasori and throws him clear of a missile explosion at personal risk. His concern for Tsunade’s independence also leads him to warn Nagato that she would die rather than submit to captivity 9 10 99.

His feelings toward Konoha are more conflicted than simple hatred. He once planned to destroy the village to sever his remaining bonds, but ultimately realizes that his own attachment to that goal—not the village itself—was preventing him from moving forward 98 116.

Abilities & Skills

Biological Research and the Second Body Plan

Orochimaru is responsible for translating Nagato’s XYZ Plan, expressed as X + Y ≥ Z, into a workable biological project. The plan seeks to develop a second body and eventually merge its powers into Nagato’s original body 12.

  • Identifies three required genetic components: Nagato’s cells, high-quality Hashirama Cells, and Uchiha cells 13.
  • Rejects the old Konoha laboratory’s Hashirama Cells as insufficiently pure 13.
  • Proposes embryonic modifications that would establish artificial blood relationships with selected Uchiha, providing potential donors for future Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan transplants 13.
  • Explains that genetic material from an unborn child can be obtained through a blood sample from the mother 13.
  • Warns that fusion could produce elimination, mutation, evolution, or complete failure; he considers the overall success rate extremely low 12.
  • Cultivates an artificial placenta from Hashirama Cells for the developing Kaede, ending the need for Nagato to provide blood regularly 64.

White Zetsu Research and Counter-Surveillance

Orochimaru studies White Zetsu’s body and soul to overcome Obito’s surveillance network 13 35.

  • Discovers that White Zetsu’s soul serves as a communication medium, though a living body is needed to express its thoughts fully 35.
  • Develops White Zetsu Assimilation, resolving a technical obstacle in Nagato’s plans 46.
  • Gains the ability to sense White Zetsu, helping him and Kabuto evade scouts while recovering laboratory equipment 61.
  • Eliminates the White Zetsu monitoring his Land of Rice headquarters 49.
  • Invents Invisibility Talismans that make White Zetsu overlook marked people and equipment, even at close range 83.

Body Transfer

Orochimaru pursues immortality by transferring his consciousness into living bodies. This approach becomes a point of philosophical conflict with Sasori’s corpse-based puppet immortality 7.

  • Successfully transfers his entire soul into a younger clone for the Chunin Exams 181.
  • The transfer prevents him from returning to his original body for three years 181.
  • His new appearance does not eliminate his dangerous presence or killing intent 181.

Soft Body Modification and Skin Shedding

His modified body withstands damage that would destroy an ordinary human body. Skin shedding allows him to abandon an injured exterior and emerge restored 121.

  • Survives Nagato’s enormous Water Dragon Bullet despite suffering severe damage 121.
  • Uses shed bodies as decoys for surprise attacks 121.
  • Has reduced sensitivity to pain, helping him survive Amatsu Ukemikoto’s extreme pain amplification 122.
  • Can be prevented from replacing his body: Nagato’s Black Rods interrupt the technique and immobilize him 10.

Snake Techniques and Summoning

Orochimaru combines snakes with restraint, rescue, weapons, and large-scale assaults 9 69 121.

  • Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Extends snakes from his sleeves to retrieve Kabuto from Sasori’s control 9.
  • Snake restraint: Helps hold the reincarnated Kakuzu while Pain threatens to extract his memories 69.
  • Myriad Snake Formation: Produces a vast tide of snakes, each carrying a Kusanagi Sword in its mouth 121.
  • Giant Snake Summoning: Launches attacks through dense steam during his sparring match with Nagato 121.
  • Manda: Summons the enormous snake king of Ryūchi Cave. Manda is powerful but hostile, expects compensation, and withdraws when Pain’s coordinated attacks turn the battle against him 10.

Eight Branches Technique

Orochimaru transforms into the Yamata no Orochi, an eight-headed, eight-tailed white serpent comparable in size to a Tailed Beast 123.

  • Regenerates severed heads almost immediately 123.
  • Damages Nagato’s skeletal Susanoo through repeated attacks 123.
  • Its chakra does not match a Tailed Beast’s, but its endurance and resilience make it exceptionally difficult to overcome 123.
  • Reveals the technique only after Nagato demands a hidden ability in exchange for further ocular demonstrations 123.

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru revives dead shinobi for Nagato’s research and strategic objectives 69 156.

  • Revives Kakuzu, enabling Nagato to recruit him as Amegakure’s financial steward and seek the Earth Grudge Fear scroll 69.
  • Revives Kinkaku and Ginkaku, whose Nine-Tails chakra restores the life force Nagato spent saving Kushina 156.
  • Improves the technique by using White Zetsu sacrifices, but doing so risks exposing his alliance with Nagato 156.

Other Ninjutsu and Technical Expertise

  • Wind Release: Great Breakthrough: Opens his sparring match against Nagato’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 120.
  • Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique: Multiplies thrown weapons for attack, distraction, and retreat cover 10 121.
  • Rashomon: Summons a massive defensive gate against Majestic Destroyer Flame; the gate blocks the fire before disintegrating 121.
  • Blood-Sealing Seal: Masters the obscure sealing technique Kabuto uses to extract Obito’s blood from the boulder at Kannabi Bridge 49.
  • Dōjutsu analysis: Investigates the Sharingan, Rinnegan, Izanagi, and Eternal Mangekyō abilities. His initial theory that the Sharingan directly evolves into the Rinnegan is explicitly treated as mistaken in the novel 11 50 122.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Used through his own throat or a snake’s mouth; cuts Sasori’s chakra threads and serves as a concealed striking weapon 9 121 122.
  • Fūma Shuriken — Multiplied with Shuriken Shadow Clone Jutsu to cover an attempted escape from Pain 10.
  • Animal Path summoning contract — Signs Nagato’s contract and stores it inside his body so Nagato can summon him 13.
  • Crystal ball — Used to monitor Kabuto’s mission at Kannabi Bridge 49.
  • Invisibility Talismans — Conceal people and equipment specifically from White Zetsu’s perception 83.
  • Experimental equipment and preserved test subjects — Recovered from his scattered bases and relocated to Amegakure 52 61.

Relationships

  • Nagato — Initially coerces Orochimaru into cooperation through superior strength and privileged knowledge. Their partnership develops into trust, personal consideration, and a shared research enterprise 10 12 61 98 116.
  • Yakushi Kabuto — Trusted subordinate and laboratory assistant. Orochimaru protects him in combat, uses his mistakes as lessons, and becomes alarmed when Obito’s interrogation puts him in danger 7 9 10 49.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teacher and an unresolved emotional attachment. Orochimaru ultimately helps keep him alive while forcing him to conceal Nagato’s actions 98 115 116.
  • Konan — Research collaborator who initially distrusts his motives. They later coordinate laboratory security, although she remains fiercely protective of Nagato 65 83.
  • Sasori — Rival whose concept of eternal puppet art conflicts with Orochimaru’s living-body immortality. Sasori’s search for him supplies Nagato’s route to their first meeting 7 9.
  • Danzō — Former Root associate and experimental partner. Their collaboration centers on Sharingan, Hashirama Cells, and Izanagi 50.
  • Obito Uchiha — Enemy who fears Orochimaru could make Nagato uncontrollable. Orders surveillance of his bases and his immediate assassination if located 48 50.
  • Tsunade — Former comrade whose trauma and independence Orochimaru understands; he warns against attempting to force her into submission 98 99.
  • Jiraiya — Fellow Sannin. Jiraiya initially suspects Orochimaru of stealing Nagato’s Rinnegan, while Orochimaru later observes Pain’s battle against him from the underground base 77 80.
  • Kimimaro and Jūgo — Treat him with fear and respect. He openly acknowledges that they might have become experiments without Nagato’s protection 181.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Recruitment at Heaven-Earth Bridge

Nagato identifies Orochimaru’s technical expertise as essential to his long-term plans and tracks him through Sasori and Kabuto. Orochimaru intervenes when Sasori overpowers Kabuto, then becomes consumed by the sight of Pain’s Rinnegan 2 7 8 9.

After Pain defeats Manda and immobilizes Orochimaru with Black Rods, Nagato offers knowledge of Madara and the eyes’ true origin. Orochimaru chooses that knowledge over an immediate opportunity to seize the Rinnegan and brings Nagato into his hideout 10 11.

The XYZ Plan and Obito’s Blood

Orochimaru evaluates Nagato’s proposed second body and begins researching White Zetsu as a covert source of suitable Hashirama material. The project also requires Uchiha blood samples, with Obito selected as the final desired donor 12 13 35 46.

He and Nagato prepare Kabuto’s mission to Kannabi Bridge, including Izanagi as protection against death. Although Orochimaru urges an emergency rescue during Obito’s interrogation, Kabuto survives, preserves the real blood scroll, and escapes with Hashirama artificial-body cells 49 50.

Relocation to Amegakure

With Obito searching for him, Orochimaru evacuates valuable equipment and test subjects from his scattered bases. After Nagato defeats Hanzo, he provides a vast underground laboratory protected against chakra surveillance, Byakugan observation, Earth Release intrusion, and White Zetsu infiltration 52 61.

Orochimaru and Kabuto continue the Second Body Plan there. Their facilities become a significant financial burden on Amegakure, helping motivate Kakuzu’s resurrection and recruitment 64 67 69.

Hiruzen’s Fate

Nagato offers to spare Hiruzen if Orochimaru wishes, accepting the danger of leaving a potential enemy alive. The two then plan to lure Hiruzen out of Konoha rather than attack the heavily guarded village 98 99.

At the decisive meeting, Orochimaru claims responsibility for choosing Hiruzen as the source of Nagato’s missing Yin Release pathway. He argues that Hiruzen’s death could trigger war, then pressures his teacher to survive and conceal the encounter. Afterwards, Orochimaru declares that he has finally relinquished both attachment and resentment toward Konoha 115 116.

Ocular Testing and Life-Force Restoration

Orochimaru serves as Nagato’s sparring partner while Nagato tests Madara’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. His body modification, shedding techniques, summons, and Eight Branches Technique allow the testing to escalate from close combat to a clash with Susanoo 120 121 122 123.

Later, he revives Kinkaku and Ginkaku to replenish Nagato’s sacrificed life force. When Nagato summons the Demonic Statue, Orochimaru identifies the danger of its fixed summoning reference point and Kamui, then receives a three-day window to analyze it 156 157.

Chunin Exams Infiltration

Orochimaru clones his younger body and transfers his soul into it to enter Konoha’s Chunin Exams. Nagato registers him as Snake Eater, supposedly Orochimaru’s son and an ordinary Amegakure Genin. The cover exploits Konoha’s refusal to punish a criminal’s child for the parent’s actions 181.

Notable Quotes

“Heh heh, will I die? Even so, I want to uncover the secret of the Rinnegan!!” 9

“Seeking truth requires a rigorous attitude. To ensure the purity of that truth, Nagato, I need you to tell me the entire story from beginning to end.” 11

“For all these years, what bound me... was not the village itself, but the thoughts in my heart that I could not let go of.” 116

Trivia

  • Orochimaru notices that Nagato expresses subtly different personalities through each Pain: cold composure through Yahiko, mischief through Rin, and rugged bluntness through the Third Raikage 73.
  • Nagato jokingly groups Orochimaru, Kabuto, and Sasori as Amegakure’s snake, rat, and scorpion—its “three calamities” 135.
  • He prioritizes inspecting his new laboratory over attending Nagato’s proposed welcome feast 61.
