Background and History
Hiashi was Hyuga Suigetsu's eldest son and favored successor within the Main Family. As a young jonin, he was kept close to Suigetsu and trained for eventual leadership. He acknowledged Hyuga Satoru's unprecedented Dual Bloodline Limit, but believed Satoru's disregard for the Gentle Fist would obstruct his future. 12 40
When Satoru's victory over Kakashi stirred the Branch Family, Hiashi proposed giving Satoru another identity to resolve the problem of whether to reward or punish him. He later personally offered to take Satoru as his disciple—an arrangement that would have tied the influential Branch Family prodigy to the future clan head. Satoru refused, though Hiashi still arranged a monthly subsidy in the clan's name. 40
After Suigetsu abdicated, Hiashi formally inherited the position of clan head. His inauguration was interrupted by Satoru's coup against the Main Family. Hiashi did not attack Satoru during the confrontation and was spared, partly because Satoru considered Hiashi's young daughters; nevertheless, Hiashi lost the clan-head position when Satoru abolished the Main Family system. 129 131
Following the reformation, Hiashi lived quietly in his old-fashioned residence at the edge of the Hyuga compound. He later served as a battalion commander, using the Byakugan to identify the Land of Fire's Daimyo during an assault on the manor. 206 235
Appearance
Hiashi closely resembles his younger brother Hizashi. Unlike Hizashi, whose forehead was covered by a protector associated with the Branch Family, Hiashi's forehead was unmarked. 40
- Long hair that had become streaked with silver by the time Hinata was growing up. 281
- Retained a Gentle Fist combat stance despite the New Hyuga's diminished emphasis on the traditional art. 281
Personality
Hiashi was shaped by the old Hyuga hierarchy and its emphasis on order, Main Family authority, and the Gentle Fist. His attempt to make Satoru a disciple shows a pragmatic desire to contain a destabilizing Branch Family genius within the existing system rather than openly confront him. 12 40
After losing power, he became notably withdrawn and avoided attention within the clan. Despite this isolation, he remained protective of Hinata, immediately placing himself between her and Yugito Nii when she intruded into his home. 206 281
