Background
Kakashi was trained by his father, Hatake Sakumo, the White Fang. Even while still an academy student, his shuriken work and taijutsu placed him far ahead of his classmates; Hyuga Satoru regarded him as the class's greatest genius 3 9.
Sakumo's abandoned mission, the ensuing village slander, and his eventual suicide profoundly affected Kakashi. He graduated early and earned a reputation as a prodigy, but his poor coordination with unfamiliar squads and rigid fixation on mission completion left him isolated from other genin 17.
By the time he confronted Uchiha Rin, Kakashi had been suppressing his grief by calling his father a coward. Mention of Sakumo provoked him into using his unfinished Chidori against Rin, forcing Satoru to intervene before the technique could seriously injure her 37.
Personality
Kakashi initially presents himself as cold, proud, and intensely competitive. The loss of his father and public condemnation of Sakumo drive him to prioritize missions over comrades, while his belief that he has fallen behind Satoru deepens his resentment and isolation 17 37 161.
His defeat by Satoru breaks through this emotional repression. Kakashi openly mourns Sakumo and later seeks Satoru's interpretation of his father's will, beginning to reconsider whether Sakumo's choice to protect comrades was an embodiment of the Will of Fire rather than cowardice 39 105.
After learning that Konoha's senior officials orchestrated the White Fang incident, Kakashi becomes driven by revenge and self-reliance. He accepts dangerous bodily modification for power, yet shows loyalty to Satoru after recognizing that his new strength was bestowed through trust rather than coercion 161 169.
Despite his ruthlessness on missions, he retains compassion for exceptional children. During his Hidden Mist infiltration, he brings Kimimaro out of the doomed Kaguya Clan rather than leave the child to be wasted in its coming destruction 170.
Appearance
Kakashi is a white-haired shinobi who later becomes visually defined by his left-eye Byakugan and retractable Adamantium claws.
- White hair 37
- A high-purity Byakugan transplanted into his left eye 163
- Three retractable metal claws in each fist 163
- An Adamantium-reinforced skeleton, sometimes visible through severe wounds before they heal 171
Abilities & Skills
Hatake Swordsmanship and Taijutsu
Kakashi was trained in the White Fang's style and initially fought with the White Fang Short Sword. His swordsmanship is sharp, fast, and focused on exploiting weak points 37.
- His sword attacks were effective enough to pressure Sharingan-user Uchiha Rin 37.
- Satoru's Magnet Release disrupted his sword, forcing Kakashi to shift toward hand-to-hand combat 38.
- After his modification, he adapts his short-sword experience to fighting with claws, regarding them as comparable to wielding multiple White Fang blades 163.
Chidori and Lightning Release
Kakashi developed Chidori, an A-rank Lightning Release thrust technique.
- Its initial lack of control and high charge speed leave him vulnerable without enhanced visual tracking 37 163.
- He combines Chidori with Adamantium claws, greatly increasing its piercing potential 163.
- He channels Lightning Release through his metal skeleton to stimulate his muscles and dramatically increase physical speed 171.
- His later Lightning Thunderclap combines the Sixth Gate with Lightning Release Chakra 232.
Eight Inner Gates
Kakashi learns the Eight Inner Gates under Satoru's guidance.
- He opens through the Fourth Gate during his first clash with Obito, pairing the Gates' physical boost with Lightning Release acceleration 171.
- He later reaches the Sixth Gate, his stated limit when fighting the Two-Tails 232 286.
- The technique grants explosive speed and power but demands considerable endurance and places extreme strain on his body.
Adamantium Body Modification
Satoru modifies Kakashi with Hashirama-cell-derived healing factors and injects Adamantium into his bones, making him Root's “Wolverine” 162 163.
- His bones gain an indestructible quality said to resist even S-rank ninjutsu 162 163.
- He can extend three Adamantium claws from each fist 163.
- The claws slice through trees, large rocks, and a veteran jonin with ease 163 169.
- Adamantium improves the conduction of his Lightning Release through his body, enabling his high-speed combat method 171.
- Satoru retains influence over the metal within Kakashi's body, making the power inseparable from Kakashi's allegiance 163.
Regeneration and Cell Activation
Hashirama-cell modification gives Kakashi substantial self-healing ability, further augmented by the Cell Activation technique 162 163.
- Wounds close visibly within seconds after combat 163.
- His arm regenerates rapidly after Obito's Kamui tears it open and exposes his metallic bones 171.
- Cell Activation also increases his available chakra 163.
Byakugan
Kakashi receives a “perfect” Byakugan from Satoru and uses it as his left eye 163.
- Provides chakra perception, X-ray vision, reconnaissance, and weakness detection 163.
- Can be closed at will and consumes little additional chakra compared with a Sharingan 163.
- Allows him to track targets and calculate infiltration routes across the Hidden Mist Village 168 170.
- Helps him identify the chakra weak points of the fully transformed Two-Tails 286.
- He recovers Ao's stolen right-eye Byakugan for Satoru but does not keep it for himself 169.
Stealth, Assassination, and Command
Kakashi's preferred operational style after joining Root is stealth and precision.
- He infiltrates the Hidden Mist Village, kills Ao in seven seconds, recovers the stolen Byakugan, and secures Corpse Bone Pulse bodies 168 169 170.
- He commands Root's Second Revolutionary Army during Konoha's revolution in the Land of Fire, directing assassination, intelligence, and covert operations 228.
- He identifies a rogue ninja disguised as a samurai through Byakugan chakra vision and eliminates him before the target can deploy concealed Exploding Tags 228.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- White Fang Short Sword — Hatake Sakumo's blade; used by Kakashi before his Adamantium modification 38.
- Adamantium claws — Three retractable claws in each hand, integrated with his skeleton 163.
- Left-eye Byakugan — High-purity transplanted dōjutsu supplied by Satoru 163.
- Make-Out Paradise — A book Kakashi reads during his retirement 281.
Relationships
- Hatake Sakumo — Father and the White Fang. Sakumo's suicide shaped Kakashi's grief, worldview, and eventual pursuit of revenge against those responsible 17 39 161.
- Hyuga Satoru — Former academy rival who defeats Kakashi, helps him reinterpret Sakumo's death, later grants him power through Root modification, and becomes his superior 39 105 161 163.
- Uchiha Rin — Former classmate and opponent. Their clash begins when she mentions Sakumo, triggering Kakashi's emotional outburst 37.
- Might Guy — Former classmate who worries over Kakashi's increasingly withdrawn behavior after his defeat 37 103.
- Minato Namikaze — Team leader whose information about Obito's intangibility helps Kakashi assess Kamui's weakness 104 171.
- Obito Uchiha — Repeated adversary who confronts Kakashi in the Land of Water and again during the revolution; Kakashi wounds him by exploiting the brief gaps in Kamui's intangibility 170 171 232.
- Kimimaro — Kaguya Clan child Kakashi rescues from the Hidden Mist Village and later trains as the eldest member of Satoru's young Root group 170 172.
- Yamato — Root member placed under Kakashi's training alongside Kimimaro 172.
- Hyuga Hinata — Kakashi rescues her after Yugito Nii infiltrates the Hyuga estate and abducts her 281 286.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Public Challenge and Defeat
Kakashi fights Uchiha Rin outside the Task Management Office, escalating to Chidori after she speaks of Sakumo. Satoru stops the attack, accepts Kakashi's challenge, and defeats him by neutralizing his swordsmanship, evading his Chidori, and forcing him into the ground 37 38.
The loss leads Kakashi to publicly break down over his father's suicide. Satoru reframes Sakumo's decision as an act of conviction and invites Kakashi to challenge him again whenever he believes he is ready 39.
Search for Sakumo's Will
More withdrawn after the public defeat, Kakashi asks Satoru about his father's will. Satoru argues that Sakumo protected comrades and villagers, thereby fulfilling the Will of Fire; this gives Kakashi a new basis for understanding his father's death 104 105.
Root Transformation
After Satoru takes over Root, Kakashi seeks strength to avenge Sakumo and punish the officials behind the White Fang incident. He accepts the risks of Hashirama-cell treatment, Adamantium injection, and bodily modification, becoming Root operative “Wolverine” 161 162 163.
Hidden Mist Infiltration
To repay Satoru's trust, Kakashi infiltrates the Hidden Mist Village. He kills Ao, retrieves the stolen Byakugan, obtains Corpse Bone Pulse bodies, and rescues Kimimaro after discovering the Kaguya Clan's planned rebellion 168 169 170.
Obito intercepts him during his escape. Kakashi survives Kamui, opens the first four Inner Gates, and lands a blow when Obito becomes tangible, forcing Obito to retreat 171.
Revolutionary Army Commander
Kakashi commands the Second Revolutionary Army, Root's elite force, during Konoha's revolution against the Land of Fire's Daimyo. He leads covert operations against nobles, rogue ninja, and samurai forces while instructing Kimimaro and Yamato 228.
He later confronts Obito again, this time using the Sixth Gate and Lightning Release Chakra against Obito's Second Form Susanoo 232 233.
Rescue of Hinata and Fourth Shinobi World War
Though retired and bored by inactivity, Kakashi detects Yugito Nii's intrusion into the Hyuga estate with his Byakugan and pursues her to recover the abducted Hinata 281.
He faces Yugito's complete Two-Tails transformation, uses his Byakugan to find a weakness, opens the Fifth and Sixth Gates, and ultimately defeats Yugito through Sharingan and Chakra Nature Transformation 286.
Notable Quotes
“He was a coward! So what if he abandoned the mission? So what if his comrades insulted him? Why did he have to kill himself?” 39
“Satoru, I want to become stronger!” 161
“No, I'm not like you, a thief. I was given it.” 168
Trivia
- Kakashi initially considers keeping Ao's recovered Byakugan to form a complete pair, but ultimately seals it for return to Satoru 169.
- He is surprised to learn that other villages call him the Konoha Silver Wolf 281.
- His Root codename, Wolverine, is given after his Adamantium modification and claw manifestation 163.
