Organization and Leadership

Guild Masters

Master Position Documented Role
Mavis Vermillion First master and founder Established Fairy Tail and its ancient protections on Wolf Island. Later assists the guild as a ghost and strategist 232 272 350.
Precht / Hades Second master Passed leadership to Makarov, left to travel, and eventually became Grimoire Heart’s master. Returns as Fairy Tail’s enemy 232 233.
Makarov Third master; later sixth master Leads the guild through its major conflicts and resumes leadership after the seven-year absence 229 273.

Missions and S-Class Access

  • Members take commissions from the guild; even powerful outsiders associated with Achill’s guild use Fairy Tail’s request board 148.
  • S-Class requests are kept on the restricted second floor. Natsu’s unauthorized removal of one prompts Makarov to order his retrieval because he is not strong enough to undertake it alone 46.
  • S-Class promotion is assessed through an annual examination. Selection details vary, but combat against other candidates is a central element 210.
  • In the documented examination, candidates receive one week to choose partners and prepare. Existing S-Class Mages cannot serve as partners and instead act as obstacles 214.

Wolf Island S-Class Examination

Candidate Partner
Natsu Happy 214
Gray Loke 214
Juvia Lisanna 214
Elfman Evergreen 214
Cana Lucy 214
Freed Bickslow 214
Levy Gajeel 214
Mest Wendy; “Mest” is actually the undercover Doranbolt 214
  • The preliminary trial offers eight routes containing team battles, encounters with powerful guardians and S-Class Mages, or a supposedly safe Tranquil Route 216.
  • Gildarts, Erza, and Mira guard the Fierce Battle Routes. Achill prepares traps on the Tranquil Route 216.
  • Fairy Tail’s enemy-attack flare halts the examination when Grimoire Heart approaches 229.

History

Early Connections with Achill

Achill’s interest in Fairy Tail begins through people already important to him. Mystogan tells him that Erza belongs to the guild, and Achill connects her guild mark with the mark he remembers on Rob’s back. He subsequently keeps watch on Fairy Tail while searching for the Tower of Paradise 40 41.

After encountering Natsu and Lucy at the coast, Achill warns them that the army is approaching. He later secretly observes Erza’s return to the guild and follows her team’s investigation of Eisenwald, both to assess her growth and to watch for dangers 41 42 43.

Phantom Lord War

Gajeel’s attack on Levy, Jade, and Droy escalates Fairy Tail’s rivalry with Phantom Lord into open war. Makarov leads an assault on Phantom Lord’s Oak City branch, but Aria drains his magical power. Erza orders a retreat to prevent further losses 55 56.

With Makarov defeated and much of its strongest fighting force unavailable, Fairy Tail gathers in a temporary underground hall. Erza prepares to intercept the mobile fortress’s Jupiter cannon herself, expecting to die. Achill arrives before impact and blocks the blast 58.

Achill subsequently destroys Phantom Lord’s fortress, while Fairy Tail’s fighters engage the survivors: Natsu confronts Gajeel, Gray fights Juvia, Elfman takes Sol, and Erza battles five telepathically linked siblings 60.

Tower of Paradise and Achill’s Recruitment

When Erza is abducted from Akane, Natsu, Gray, Lucy, and Juvia pursue her captors to the Tower of Paradise. The guild’s fighters defeat members of the Three Crows, with Gray rescuing Natsu after he is swallowed by the bird-headed enemy 67 73 74.

Following the Tower incident, Fairy Tail shelters the unconscious Achill. Once he recovers, Makarov apologizes for their earlier conflict and formally invites him to join the guild’s family. Achill instead establishes Macho’s Kasaya, preferring independence from Makarov, but continues spending much of his time at Fairy Tail 84 85 88 148.

Oración Seis and Edolas

Fairy Tail joins the alliance assembled at Blue Pegasus master Bob’s villa to oppose Oración Seis. Erza, Natsu, Gray, and Lucy participate alongside representatives of the other guilds 121 124.

Later, Anima threatens Magnolia and Fairy Tail. Achill dispels the immediate danger, and Mystogan reveals his origins in Edolas. The guild responds with anger and a determination to confront the world responsible for the attack 150 151.

Grimoire Heart and the Wolf Island Disappearance

Grimoire Heart invades during Fairy Tail’s S-Class examination, seeking Zeref while also intending to destroy the guild. Makarov recognizes its master, Hades, as his predecessor Precht. Their confrontation forces him to defend the younger members against someone who once taught Fairy Tail’s own ideals 229 232 233.

Battles spread across the island. Mira defeats Rustyrose but is overwhelmed by Bluenote; Achill intervenes. Natsu, Laxus, and Gildarts fight Hades together, yet are defeated before Achill arrives to take over the confrontation 240 244 246.

After Acnologia’s attack, the world believes Wolf Island and Fairy Tail’s principal members have been destroyed. Search efforts continue for a year, sustained partly by hope that Achill survived and saved the others. Their failure leaves the remaining guild burdened with debt, shrinking commissions, declining membership, and pressure from the New Magic Council 267.

Return and Grand Magic Games

The missing members survive because Fairy Sphere seals Wolf Island and cuts off its magical signals. Their return after seven years initially does little to reverse public contempt for Fairy Tail. Makarov organizes training for the Grand Magic Games, while Achill and Mira remain asleep inside the Guardian Egg for a little longer 273 274.

Achill’s return and eventual membership change the guild’s prospects. Fairy Tail enters two teams, wins the preliminaries through Team B, and steadily takes control of the standings. Its victories, reinforced by Mira’s transformation and Erza’s high-level Kidō, expose the gulf between its public reputation and its restored strength 276 280 282 305 325 326.

During the final battle, Achill eliminates Quatro Cerberus and later clears nearly all remaining opponents with a huge Cero. Fairy Tail’s lead becomes mathematically unreachable, and the guild wins the tournament. Its celebration is nevertheless subdued by the approaching danger surrounding the Eclipse Project and July 7 351 358 359 361.

Culture and Reputation

Fairy Tail treats its members as family. Attacks on individual members provoke collective retaliation, whether the victims are Levy’s team during the Phantom Lord conflict or Achill during the confrontation with Sabertooth. Lucy extends the same principle to Yukino, welcoming her after Sabertooth’s rejection and refusing to take away the Celestial Spirit Keys that represent her treasured bonds 55 315 328.

Its everyday atmosphere is noisy, competitive, and irreverent. Natsu and Gray quarrel, members tease one another, and communal meals frequently become spectacles. Erza serves as an unofficial disciplinarian: even Natsu, Gray, and Loke fear the consequences of her displeasure 42 189 293.

Fairy Tail is also notorious for collateral destruction. Its members avoid government officials after destructive incidents, and it ranks second on Weekly Sorcerer’s list of the guilds causing the most destruction, behind Achill’s guild. Repair costs later reduce the variety and quantity of food available at the guildhall 41 122 189.

Magic and Defensive Assets

Fairy Law

One of Fairy Tail’s three great super spells, wielded by Makarov 232.

  • Makarov intends to use it to wipe out Grimoire Heart’s attacking forces.
  • Hades’s threat of Devil’s Law, together with the revelation of his identity, makes Makarov abandon that plan 232.

Fairy Sphere

The protective spell responsible for the survival and isolation of Wolf Island’s missing members 274.

  • Seals the island and cuts off magic from the outside world.
  • Prevents magical signals from reaching the Magic Connection Stones, causing their failure to be mistaken for evidence of death 274.

Fairy Glitter

A named magic sought by Grimoire Heart’s deputy master, Bluenote 240.

  • Bluenote demands information about it from Mira.
  • Its effects and activation requirements are not described in the supplied passages 240.

Wolf Island’s Protective Magic

Mavis’s barrier and ancient magic give Fairy Tail a home-ground advantage 232.

  • The island’s magic strengthens Fairy Tail members and weakens outsiders 216.
  • Achill finds his sensory abilities severely restricted there 216.
  • The Wolf Tree and protective barrier help shield the island during Makarov and Hades’s battle 233.
  • Guild emblems emit a magical presence matching that of the island 226.

Mavis’s Strategy

Mavis prepares the Star plan for the Grand Magic Games’ final battle 350.

  • Studies opposing teams and runs hundreds of millions of tactical simulations.
  • Claims that every action taken on the field up to that point falls within her calculations.
  • Achill dismisses the plan before she can explain it, believing his overwhelming strength makes elaborate tactics unnecessary 350.

Achill’s Training and Support

Achill’s assistance develops from emergency rescue into an effort to make Fairy Tail less dependent on him 237.

  • Creates Dancing, a partial-Requip technique suited to controlled combat and sparring with Erza and other guild members 239.
  • Uses his confrontation with Zancrow to teach Natsu that Dragon Slayer Magic might overcome God Slayer Magic if raised to a sufficiently high level 239.
  • Supports Erza’s use of Kidō and insists that Le Qi’s granted abilities remain secret defensive resources for times when he is absent or occupied 326.
  • Uses Kyoka Suigetsu’s Complete Hypnosis during the final Games battle to conceal the guild’s actual location and create false images of its members in the arena 349 359.
