Background / History
Gerard was enslaved at the Tower of Paradise construction site alongside Chen Wuming, Erza, and other children. He cared for the exhausted Chen soon after they met, welcomed him as a friend, and shared the forced labor imposed by the site’s mage organization 6 7.
He consistently resisted the overseers’ cruelty. Gerard intervened when Shou and Erza were tortured with lightning magic, joined the group’s first escape attempt, and tried to take responsibility for the plan alongside Chen when the captors demanded a culprit 8 10. During the attempt to rescue the injured Erza, he carried her through an ambush while wielding a half-broken broadsword. Though he defeated numerous Magic Soldiers, he was overwhelmed, captured, and tortured 11 12.
While imprisoned, Gerard learned from his interrogators that Chen had likely survived. The news briefly restored his hope, but his accumulated hatred and despair were exploited by a mysterious presence identifying itself as Zeref. Crimson markings spread around Gerard’s eye as he accepted the entity’s influence 12.
After Erza freed him during the rebellion, Gerard rejected the escape she offered. He declared that the Tower of Paradise itself represented “true freedom,” intended to complete it and revive Zeref, and murdered both former overseers despite Erza’s plea for mercy 18. He later abducted the injured Erza and confronted Chen, whom he had once regarded as an older brother 20.
Chen froze Gerard within Sode no Shirayuki’s ice, but Gerard emerged unharmed shortly afterward. He credited Zeref’s “protection,” while Chen suspected that an unseen accomplice had intervened 20 21. During their second confrontation, Gerard exploited Chen’s attempt to protect Erza from a hidden attacker and mortally wounded him. He then destroyed the escape ships, framed Erza for the disaster, and used Chen’s dropped earring to support his fabricated account, turning most of the survivors toward completing the Tower 22.
Appearance
Gerard is a blue-haired boy with a distinctive facial marking. His appearance becomes visibly more sinister after Zeref’s influence takes hold.
- Beautiful blue hair 6
- Dark-brown marking running from above his right eye toward his jaw 6
- Crimson patterns spreading around his right eye after his corruption 12
- An unnaturally wicked smile and oppressive magical aura in his corrupted state 12 21
Personality
Before his transformation, Gerard is compassionate, courageous, and protective. He looks after Chen during forced labor, reacts angrily to the torture of other prisoners, and risks his life to help rescue Erza 7 8 11. Even under torture, he refuses to betray Chen and is genuinely relieved to learn that his friend may still be alive 12.
After Zeref’s intervention, Gerard’s desire for freedom becomes warped into fanaticism. He treats Zeref as a god, equates domination through the Tower with liberation, and dismisses Erza’s compassion as weakness 18 20. He becomes manipulative and opportunistic, using Chen’s apparent death and the survivors’ grief to secure obedience through lies 22.
