Background / History
Erza was imprisoned at the Tower of Paradise alongside Shou and other children, where overseers subjected them to forced labor and abuse. After Chen Wuming and Gerard defended her and Shou, she thanked them while tending Shou’s wounds. Having no surname, she accepted Gerard’s suggestion of “Scarlet,” chosen for her rare scarlet hair. 8
During the prisoners’ first escape attempt, Erza supported Shou’s wish for freedom but nearly lost her nerve when the group reached the escape passage. Encouragement from Gerard and deliberately harsh words from Chen Wuming helped her move forward. 9
When the attempt failed, Erza tried to accept responsibility in Shou’s place. The overseers instead identified her as the person being protected and took her to the torture room, where her right eye was apparently removed or destroyed. Chen Wuming and Gerard rescued her, but their escape was blocked by Magic Soldiers. 10 11
Believing that Chen Wuming and Gerard had sacrificed themselves for her, Erza rejected submission and rallied the other prisoners into open rebellion. After Grandpa Rob died protecting her from a Magic Soldier bombardment, her latent magic awakened; weapons and tools rose into the air and struck the enemy mages. 11 13
Erza later freed Gerard from imprisonment, only to discover that he had embraced Zeref and intended to complete the Tower of Paradise. She refused to join him, pleaded with him not to kill the defeated overseers, and was ultimately beaten and forced into a boat under threat that Shou and the other children would remain enslaved. 18 19
Chen Wuming’s return briefly restored her hope, but he was apparently killed after protecting her from a hidden attacker’s ice spear. Gerard then framed Erza for the destruction of the ships and Chen’s death; Simon alone continued to believe she was innocent. 22
By the time of her later life in Fairy Tail, Erza had become one of the guild’s most feared and respected mages. Achill—Chen Wuming’s later identity—learned that she was safe in Fairy Tail but avoided revealing himself to her out of guilt over the Tower of Paradise. 40 42
Erza recognized Achill during the Eisenwald incident and continued trusting him despite his reluctance to reunite openly. His intervention against Phantom Lord reinforced her belief that he had been secretly protecting her. When her childhood companions abducted her from the Akane resort, she returned to the Tower of Paradise and confronted both Gerard’s intended sacrifice of her and her own lingering trauma. Achill’s return helped her regain confidence, but she also resolved to become strong enough to stand beside him rather than leave every danger to him. 44 49 58 63 67 68 73 74 76
After the Tower of Paradise battle, Erza helped care for the unconscious Achill at Fairy Tail. Le Qi shared the full account he had previously confided to her, giving Erza and Mirajane a clearer understanding of his experiences. Erza’s bond with him subsequently became more open and affectionate, while her involvement in the Oración Seis conflict revealed that she still could not entirely abandon Gerard despite his past crimes. 84 132 142
Erza was among the Fairy Tail members isolated with Wolf Island by Fairy Sphere during the seven-year disappearance. After returning, she reunited with Achill in Crocus, where his promise not to leave again prompted her to recognize that her feelings exceeded admiration and dependence. During the Grand Magic Games, she demonstrated a new repertoire of Kidō engraved onto her body by Achill, and later developed a combat form powerful enough to fight beside him against the threats to Crocus. 274 276 324 325 363
In the later confrontation with Zeref, Erza and Mirajane supported Achill with coordinated attacks, but exhausted themselves without defeating the Black Mage. Achill sent them to the evacuation group for Le Qi’s healing. In the finale’s later gathering, Erza is shown applying her Requip Magic to everyday caregiving, preparing brushes and towels to wash a young boy. 366 375
Appearance
Erza is a scarlet-haired woman whose unusual hair color inspired the surname Scarlet. She is described as beautiful, valiant, and imposing; Fairy Tail members react to her arrival with immediate fear. 8 42
- Scarlet hair. 8
- Lost or had her right eye destroyed during torture at the Tower of Paradise. 10
- Uses Requip Magic to wear combat armor, including bright silver Armor of the Wheel. 44
- Returned from a mission carrying the enormous horn of a monster she had defeated as a souvenir. 42
- Can Requip into a traditional, nondefensive outfit while wielding a sword in each hand. 73
- Wears a matching dark blue outfit with Fairy Tail’s emblem over the left breast for the guild’s Grand Magic Games entrance. 282
- Her magic-efficient Heart Armor leaves her upper body covered by bandages rather than a conventional armored breastplate. 324
- The Kidō engraved onto her body can manifest as spreading black markings over her hands and arms. After her fully incanted Hadō No. 91, the markings retract into two small black, teardrop-shaped lucky clover emblems on her shoulders and upper arms. 325
- In Crimson Tassel Requip, she wears fiery red trousers with her shoulders and arms exposed and carries a long crimson-tasseled blade. Crimson Tassel Dance surrounds her with white magic tinged with cherry red, while faint red Kidō patterns emerge over her shoulders and arms. 363
Personality
Erza is exceptionally determined and resilient. Even as a child, she refused to submit to abuse, accepted danger to protect Shou, and overcame fear when escape became possible. 8 9 10
Her belief in freedom is central to her character. Rob’s final lesson—that freedom exists within one’s heart—became the conviction that enabled her to rally frightened prisoners and continue fighting after devastating losses. 13
Despite her hatred of the Tower’s overseers, Erza remains compassionate. She tried to stop Gerard from murdering the defeated fat mage, not out of sympathy for the overseer, but because she did not want Gerard to stain his hands with blood. 18
In Fairy Tail, she is stern, disciplined, and highly protective of her guildmates. She scolds members for disorderly behavior and initially struggles to let Natsu and Gray handle a mission without her supervision, eventually deciding that they need independence to grow. 31 42
Her protectiveness extends to self-sacrifice. Against Phantom Lord’s Jupiter cannon, she prepares to die while buying her companions time to survive. At the Akane resort, she continues pleading for Lucy’s safety even while shaken by her childhood friends’ accusations. 58 67
The Tower of Paradise remains a source of fear and hesitation until Erza recognizes that its emotional hold is limiting her strength. Her wish not to disappoint or further burden Achill helps her overcome that hesitation against Ikaruga. Although she initially refuses to leave him in danger again, she later accepts withdrawal when staying would hinder him, turning her frustration into a determination to grow stronger. 73 74 76
Around Achill, Erza reveals a more vulnerable, playful, and affectionate side. She hugs him openly upon his recovery, teases him about his ruined clothes, and eagerly seeks his approval after demonstrating her Kidō. Their Crocus reunion brings her feelings into clearer focus, beyond the older-brother admiration and dependence she had previously understood. 84 274 326
- Enjoys shopping for distinctive clothing and enthusiastically admires well-made armor. 31 84
- Can become intensely absorbed in an interest, including acting, and reacts fiercely to interruptions; Lucy compares this tendency to Achill’s own habits. 123
- Becomes unusually flustered and forceful when subjected to Ichiya’s unwelcome advances. 121 122
- Shows considerable tenderness toward the young Angel, carrying her, reassuring her, and disciplining Natsu and Gray when they shout at her. 275 282 327
- Recognizes the importance of keeping powerful abilities in reserve rather than displaying them unnecessarily, helping persuade Le Qi to preserve her secret powers for the guild’s defense. 326
Abilities & Skills
Requip Magic
Erza uses Requip Magic to change into specialized armor and wield weapons in combat.
- Summoned the Armor of the Wheel, a bright silver suit of armor, while pursuing Erigor. 44
- Used Wheel, Sword Dance—The Sword of Lamentation to defeat a large number of Eisenwald subordinates at once. 44
- Her armor and weapon collection was foreshadowed by her admiration for Sode no Shirayuki’s beauty after Chen Wuming summoned it. 20
- Equipped Adamantine Armor, her most defensively powerful Requip armor, and poured magic into it to maximize its protection against Jupiter. Achill intercepted the cannon before she had to withstand the blast herself. 58
- Equipped Armor of Ren to confront Phantom Lord’s five magically coordinated replacement fighters. 60
- Used Purgatory Armor, described as her most destructive armor at the time, against Ikaruga; the swordswoman shattered it. 73
- Abandoned defensive armor for a traditional outfit and two swords, allowing her renewed conviction and swordsmanship to decide the battle with Ikaruga. 73
- Can partially change individual components of her armor rather than Requip an entire set. Observing this technique inspired Achill’s partial-attribute Requip ability, Dancing. 239
- Uses Heart Armor to minimize the magical cost of her equipment while preparing a demanding Kidō spell. 324
- Uses Crimson Tassel Requip as her strongest offensive form in the Crocus crisis, abandoning defense in favor of attack. 363
- Can summon noncombat items, including bath brushes and towels. 375
Awakened Magic
Erza’s magic awakened after witnessing Grandpa Rob’s death.
- Released a large pink magic circle and an immense surge of crimson magic power. 13
- Lifted nearby iron weapons and tools into the air, then launched them at enemy mages. 13
- Her awakening restored the rebels’ confidence and allowed her to lead their advance. 13
Leadership and Combat Skill
Erza can organize frightened allies under extreme pressure and fight directly on the front lines.
- Started the Tower of Paradise prisoners’ rebellion by ordering them to take up weapons and fight for freedom. 11
- Led liberated laborers toward Gerard’s prison and continued urging them to search for both Gerard and Chen Wuming. 12 13
- Defeated the fat and thin area managers before freeing Gerard. 18
- Organized Natsu and Gray into a team to investigate Eisenwald and the threat posed by Lullaby. 42
- Pursued the Eisenwald train in a magic vehicle and helped recover Natsu after the group accidentally left him aboard. 43
- Ordered Fairy Tail’s retreat after Makarov’s defeat at Phantom Lord’s Oak City branch, prioritizing the reduction of further losses. 56
- Defeated Ikaruga through a decisive dual-sword slash after overcoming the fear and hesitation associated with the Tower of Paradise. The victory shattered Ikaruga’s sword but cost Erza substantial exertion. 73
- Led the others away from Achill’s confrontation with Gerard after recognizing that their presence would burden him. 76
- Had previously fought Bacchus on several jobs and regarded their strength as evenly matched at the time, without confidence that she could defeat him. 297
- Accepted responsibility for leading Fairy Tail to victory in the remaining Grand Magic Games events while Achill investigated the Kingdom’s magic-absorption system. 320
Resistance to Illusions
Erza’s special eye weakens hypnosis and illusions cast through vision, reducing their effectiveness by half. This resistance allows her to perceive targets that others cannot reliably locate. 138 320
- Could see Midnight through his illusion and launched Sword Dance at his actual position. Her two swords struck him after Achill had already poisoned him and compromised his defense. 138
- Her resistance does not protect her from Kyoka Suigetsu’s Complete Hypnosis. She experienced no warning or perceptible irregularity until Achill released the effect on Fairy Tail’s members. 320
Kidō
Achill grants Erza access to Kidō through a special engraving technique rather than ordinary instruction alone. Because his power differs fundamentally from conventional magic, Erza cannot acquire his unique energy merely by learning the spells. Instead, the engravings convert her own magic into the energy necessary to activate them. 324
- Received over one hundred Kidō spells, most of them Bakudō. 324
- The highest offensive spell granted to her is Hadō No. 91, Senkō Taihō. Achill withholds higher spells because they are sacrificial techniques or exceed her body’s and magical power’s safe limits. 324 325
- Has a natural affinity for Kidō’s rhythm, helping limit the loss of power caused by converting ordinary magic into the spells’ required energy. Their strength can increase as her own capabilities grow. 324
- Uses a full incantation to greatly increase Senkō Taihō’s power, gathering numerous brilliant orbs around herself before unleashing the attack. 324 325
- Her fully incanted Senkō Taihō erases the PF Magic Power Measuring Machine before it can record a precise reading and blasts through the arena floor, securing first place ahead of Jura. 325
- The spell drains substantial magic and stamina, leaving her exhausted but conscious. Achill praises both her fine control and her allocation of magic throughout the incantation. 326
Instant Release: Crimson Tassel Dance
Erza combines her offensive Requip form with branches of Achill’s implanted Kidō to activate Instant Release—Crimson Tassel Dance. Magic concentrates around her shoulders and arms, then envelops her body as her aura rises severalfold. 363
- Activated while holding Demon Blade Crimson Sakura in Crimson Tassel Requip. 363
- Produces blazing white power with a faint cherry-red tint and visible red patterns over the areas where magic is concentrated. 363
- In this strongest form, her magic is described as far beyond the level of the Ten Wizard Saints, qualifying her to remain beside Achill while he evacuates ordinary fighters and Crocus’s civilians. 363
- Supports Achill against Zeref alongside Mirajane, using their strongest coordinated attacks while he distorts Zeref’s senses and restrains him. The effort exceeds the women’s limits and exhausts them, while Zeref survives. 366
Magical Perception
Erza can detect significant magical clashes and use them to locate allies or threats. On Wolf Island, the First Master’s ancient magic and the Wolf Tree enhance Fairy Tail members, improving her perception to the point that it is slightly better than Achill’s while his own senses are restricted by the island’s barrier. 235
- Sensed Achill’s battle with Ultear after defeating her own opponent on Galuna Island. 48
- Tracked the magical presences of fighting companions during Grimoire Heart’s invasion. 235
- Recognized the distant clash between Achill and Hades and immediately moved to rejoin the others. 247

- His repeated interventions reinforce her belief that he watches over her, even when he avoids direct reunions. 49 58 63

- Erza Knightwalker — Erza’s Edolas counterpart, a Kingdom Army officer and wielder of the Ten Commandments Magic Spear. Achill explicitly distinguishes Knightwalker from his Earth-land “little sister”; Knightwalker’s battles and spear abilities are separate from Erza Scarlet’s. 153 154
