Background / History

Achill's original village was destroyed by bandits, leaving him without surviving relatives. Albert Ogutins rescued him, adopted him as both grandson and disciple, and gave him the name Achill Ogutins. Albert later exterminated the bandits responsible, but Achill retained a lasting hatred of banditry and an ambition to establish his own “true justice.” 1 3

At twelve, Achill attended the Grand Magic Academy under Albert's care. Despite relentless practice, his Requip Magic was catastrophically unreliable, making him an object of ridicule. Doranbalt and Lahar were his only close friends, while Albert continued to encourage him despite knowing that Achill possessed almost no conventional magical aptitude. 1

Albert's death shattered Achill's emotional stability. He fled into a river and ceased struggling, apparently choosing death; Doranbalt and Lahar later found one of his silver earrings at the riverbank and believed him dead. In reality, he was recovered by kidnappers and taken toward the Tower of Paradise as forced labor. 1 3

Following the incident, Chen Wuming awakened in Achill's younger body among the Tower's captives. Achill's memories flooded Chen's consciousness and partially fused with his own, but Chen resisted being overwritten. After later recovering his past, he acknowledged Chen Wuming as part of himself while choosing to continue living under the name Achill. 4 39

After another period of memory loss, Achill lived for roughly a year at Dancing Manor under Le Qi's care. He gradually rediscovered his name, became a freelance mage to avoid living at her expense, and began seeking clues to his lost identity. 24 25

Appearance

Achill is a black-haired youth with a youthful face and a strong preference for dramatic robes. During his travels, he commonly wore a moon-white hooded robe and carried a long sword with a spotless moon-white sheath. 26 33

  • Black hair, often disheveled after travel or combat. 26 41
  • Typically wears pale or moon-white robes, despite hating white because it reminds him of Le Qi's nickname “Whitey.” 25 36
  • Once wore a pair of silver earrings inherited from his biological parents; one was lost at the riverbank after Albert's death. 3
  • Carries Zanpakutō through his Requip space rather than relying on a single fixed weapon. 23

Personality

As a child, Achill was diligent, deeply insecure, and crushed by his inability to meet the expectations attached to being Albert's disciple. Albert's kindness, Doranbalt's loyalty, and Lahar's restraint were central to keeping him going until Albert's death removed his emotional anchor. 1

After the fusion with Chen Wuming and the loss of his memories, Achill became far more arrogant, humorous, impulsive, and power-focused. He values strength highly enough to accept the psychological influence of his weapons, yet he is capable of caution when confronting unfamiliar dangers such as Soul Magic. 16 27

He is fiercely independent and refuses to depend on Le Qi's money, even when that means taking dangerous work or robbing Dark Guild treasuries. His morality is highly personal: he shows responsibility toward people he cares about, but treats enemies, criminals, and captives with ruthless or casually cruel pragmatism. 25 30 32 33

Achill is also exceptionally directionally challenged. He repeatedly becomes lost during missions, travel, and even after regaining his memories, often creating larger problems through his refusal to ask for directions. 26 31 38 45

Abilities & Skills

Death God Requip Magic

Achill's Requip Magic, which he calls Bleach, stores weapons in a separate space and can summon Zanpakutō from an unknown source. Its early form was nearly unusable, but it later became the foundation of his overwhelming combat strength. 1 23 25

  • Can Requip and dismiss stored weapons in combat. 23 27
  • Can summon different Zanpakutō with distinct releases and abilities. 20 27
  • Can wield two Zanpakutō simultaneously, as demonstrated against Ultear. 48
  • The circumstances governing new Zanpakutō summons are unclear; Achill had not obtained a new one during the two years before Chapter 40. 23 40
  • Certain weapons influence his temperament, including Wabisuke's gloomy disposition and Haineko's hot-blooded aggression. 16 27

Flash Step

A high-speed movement technique that allows Achill to vanish, reposition, and strike from blind spots. 16 26

  • Used to appear behind opponents before they can react. 16 26
  • Enables aerial pursuit and rapid long-distance movement. 44 50
  • Initially consumed enormous amounts of magic power and nearly exhausted him after two uses. 16
  • After two years of training, he could use it repeatedly with little burden. 33

Zanpakutō Arsenal

  • Wabisuke — Doubles the weight of anything it strikes; used to overwhelm Gajeel, whose iron body made the effect especially debilitating. 16 31
  • Sode no Shirayuki — A snow-white ice Zanpakutō. Its techniques include First Dance: White Moon, Second Dance: White Ripple, Some no Mai, Hakuren, and Some no Mai, Tsukishiro. 20 48
  • Haineko — A segmented, fang-covered Shikai effective against soul-based entities; tore through Esoda's magical wraiths. 27
  • Shinsō — An extremely fast extending blade used for decisive piercing attacks, including Esoda's execution and Ultear's pursuit. 27 50
  • Hyōrinmaru — An ice dragon Zanpakutō used to freeze bandits, imprison Mystogan, and launch the technique Dragon Ice Lotus. 33 38
  • Zangetsu — Produces the destructive Crescent Strike; its power can clear large sections of forest but consumes substantial magic power. 38
  • Benihime — Produces blood-red energy attacks and defensive techniques such as Crimson Haze Shield; used extensively against Ultear. 47 48
  • Suzumebachi — Its “Two-Hit Kill” ability marked and instantly erased the supposedly immortal Deliora. 49
  • Flower Frenzy Bones — Used for stealth infiltration while following Eisenwald. 44

Ultimate Magic—Ultimate Path Reincarnation

A self-created Ultimate Magic born from Achill's realization of cyclical existence, reversal, and reincarnation while trapped in Mystogan's sleep-inducing spell. 39

  • Forms a massive Taiji Diagram across roughly a hundred-meter radius. 39
  • Emits a dissolving force that erased Mystogan's fivefold magic circles. 39
  • Its later use is uncertain; after further training, Achill remained unable to reproduce a technique referred to as Extreme Way Reincarnation. 40

Combat Senses and Physical Skill

Achill possesses sharp magical perception, combat instincts, and physical fighting ability beyond ordinary mages. 26 40

  • Detected a concealed observer immediately upon entering Nasen Forest. 26
  • Recognized the unique danger of Esoda's Soul Magic and withdrew rather than trading a physical blow for a possible soul injury. 27
  • Defeated two non-magical criminals with unarmed strikes and minimal effort. 40
  • Can conceal his aura well enough to evade Lisanna's Cat Soul tracking. 37

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Silver earrings — The final keepsakes from Achill's biological parents; one was recovered by Doranbalt at the riverbank after Achill's disappearance. 3
  • Magic rapier — A birthday gift from Albert when Achill's magic first awakened at age ten. 14
  • Lullaby — Zeref's sentient, three-eyed skull flute. Achill seized it from Erigor, proved immune to its curse, and accidentally destroyed it through his terrible flute-playing. 44 45

Relationships

  • Albert Ogutins — Adoptive grandfather, mentor, and headmaster of the Grand Magic Academy. Albert's death drove Achill into despair. 1
  • Doranbalt — Childhood friend and one of Achill's only companions at the academy; vowed to fulfill Achill's dream of becoming the world's greatest wizard after believing him dead. 1 3
  • Lahar — Childhood friend who vowed to carry on Achill's pursuit of justice against cruelty and banditry. 1 3
  • Le Qi / Leqi Oleta — Rescuer, housemate, and caretaker during Achill's amnesia. He left her money and a farewell letter before beginning his journey for memories. 24 25 32
  • President Abudu — Forest Pathfinder's guild master and a trusted acquaintance who repeatedly offered Achill work and later delivered money and a letter to Le Qi. 25 32
  • Gajeel Redfox — Initially captured as the iron thief. Achill repeatedly humiliated and exploited him for labor before Gajeel escaped. 29 32
  • Erza — A person Achill feels responsible for protecting due to the Tower of Paradise tragedy. She recognizes him as “Big Brother Nameless” and trusts him despite his secrecy. 20 40 44 49
  • Gerard — Achill's younger brother. His corruption and the Tower of Paradise remain central sources of Achill's guilt, grief, and rage. 20 38 40
  • MystoganGerard's Edolas counterpart. After their initial battle, Achill treated Mystogan like a younger brother, and Mystogan came to see him as an older-brother figure. 39 40
  • Mirajane — A volatile rival and possible romantic interest. Their encounters mix investigation, teasing, Achill's inappropriate remarks, and Mirajane's violent retaliation. 36 37 41
  • Ultear — Connected to the attempt on Achill's life at the Tower of Paradise. Achill pursues her relentlessly for revenge and the Tower's location. 47 50
  • Makarov — Opposed Achill's treatment of the incapacitated Ultear and directly intervened to protect her, leading to an imminent confrontation. 50

Story Role / Major Arcs

Grand Magic Academy and the River Incident

Achill begins as an academy student whose Requip Magic is too slow and unreliable to earn respect. Albert's death drives him to the river, where his apparent death ends his former life and begins the chain of events that leads to the Tower of Paradise and Chen Wuming's arrival. 1 3 4

Amnesia and Forest Pathfinder

After living at Dancing Manor without memories, Achill recovers his first name and works as an exceptionally strong freelance mage. His Nasen Forest commission fails because he does not know what the target herb looks like, but he kills the top-fifty wanted criminal Esoda and becomes embroiled with Gajeel's iron-theft case. 24 25 27 29

Journey for Memories

Achill leaves Le Qi in Abudu's care and begins a solitary journey to recover his identity. Two years later, he has become vastly stronger, exterminating the Hawk Thieves' Guild and freezing its surviving members in the desert. 32 33 35

Mystogan and Recovered Identity

After encountering Mystogan, whose face resembles Gerard's, Achill's suppressed memories return violently. Their battle leads to the creation of Ultimate Path Reincarnation, after which Achill learns Mystogan's Edolas identity and resolves to keep the name Achill. 38 39

Search for the Tower of Paradise

Achill refuses Mystogan's invitation to join Fairy Tail because he believes he is unworthy of facing Erza until he has resolved the Tower of Paradise crisis. He instead works as a bounty hunter while seeking the Tower and the R System. 40

Eisenwald and Lullaby

While secretly following Fairy Tail, Achill sees through Eisenwald's scheme, breaks Erigor's Demon Wind Barrier from outside, kills Erigor, and claims the title “Bleach.” He takes Lullaby, then later destroys the cursed flute himself. 43 44 45

Pursuit of Ultear

Recognizing Ultear as one of the people involved in his Tower of Paradise betrayal, Achill overwhelms her with Sode no Shirayuki and Benihime, kills Deliora with Suzumebachi, and pursues Ultear across the sea for information. Makarov stops him from finishing the chase, prompting Achill to begin releasing Bankai. 47 48 49 50

Trivia

  • Achill's only known Forest Pathfinder mission failure occurred because he accepted a herb-collection request without knowing what the herb looked like. 29
  • He dislikes white clothes because Le Qi once called him “Whitey.” 36
  • His sense of direction did not improve after recovering his memories; it became even worse. 45
  • Lullaby, a feared curse-killing artifact, was ultimately destroyed by Achill's inability to play the flute properly. 45
