Background

The Su Family is originally one of the three principal martial forces in the local town, alongside the Black Tiger Gang and White Ram Gang. Although imperial authorities retain nominal control, they largely tolerate these factions because of their martial strength, outside connections, and military value. 18

When first described, the family was known to possess a Bone Tempering Realm expert and several Muscle Refinement Realm members. Its patriarch, Su Yuanshan, is later identified as a Late Bone Tempering Realm expert and the family’s original sole Bone Tempering Realm cultivator. 13 38

The family combines martial influence with commerce. Its shop regularly buys game, medicinal herbs, and Ferocious Beast materials from mountain hunters, while the estate maintains guards, servants, alchemists, guest elders, and dedicated cultivation facilities. 14 32 35

The Su Family has been rooted in its home town for more than a century. Its established network includes nearly one hundred household servants raised within the residence since childhood, giving it a dependable administrative and protective foundation that Lin Fan initially lacks. 77

Its wider household is described as numbering in the thousands, with branch-family stewards and guest elders participating in estate affairs. Its local connections also extend into government service: an Early Muscle Refinement Realm official responsible for the town gates is a collateral Su Family descendant. 39 77

Despite practicing martial arts for generations over hundreds of years, the Su lineage had never produced a Bright Force Realm martial artist before Su Qingwei’s advancement. Su Yuanshan himself had remained trapped at Late Bone Tempering for nearly twenty years, making his daughter’s concealed breakthrough an unprecedented development for the family. 93 94

Following the destruction of the White Ram Gang and collapse of the Black Tiger Gang, the Su Family becomes the town’s sole top-tier martial force. It assumes control of former gang strongholds and businesses, accepts selected former rivals as retainers, and extends its authority to the submitted Raging Tide and White Sand Gangs in neighboring towns. 71 72 73 75 76

The family’s standing is further elevated through Lin Fan’s imperial recognition as General Pacifying the Lands and Su Qingwei’s concealed Bright Force Realm cultivation. Nearby martial forces consequently seek the Su Family’s favor and protection. 89 90 94

Lin Fan later helps Su Yuanshan enter the Early Bright Force Realm, enabling the patriarch to protect the family after Lin Fan’s immediate household moves to Commandery City. Both Su Yuanshan and Su Qingwei receive specialized techniques for concealing their cultivation. 108 115 117

After Lin Fan becomes an elder of the Azure Elixir Sect, threats from Ten Thousand Treasures Commerce prompt a broader relocation. Su Yuanshan leads several hundred family members to Azure Elixir City, where Lin Fan purchases a residence for them. At least half the family moves, while unwilling branch members remain in Green Mountain Town to watch over the family’s holdings. 159

The relocation subsequently proves timely when Ten Thousand Treasures Commerce’s Chief Steward orders preparations to capture the Su Family as hostages. His scouts discover that the relatives connected to Lin Fan by blood or marriage have already left, leaving only collateral branches without meaningful ties to him in the original town. 162

Trade with Small Mountain Village

The Su Family Shop becomes the principal buyer for goods brought from Small Mountain Village. Su Qingwei personally purchases Lin Fan’s medicinal herbs, offers favorable rates, and provides him with a VIP card. 14 15

As Lin Fan’s hunting strength grows, the shop also purchases his live wild boars, Ferocious Beasts, and other mountain products. The family forges weapons for him, including a Forging Grade 25 spear commissioned through Su Qingwei. 18 24

Recruitment of Lin Fan

When Lin Fan reveals his alchemical ability, Su Qingwei invites him to join the family as an alchemist and guard. He accepts a reduced salary of 1,000 taels per month in exchange for preserving time for cultivation, while gaining access to the Pill Pavilion’s books, ingredients, and furnaces. 31

The family provides Lin Fan with a guest elder token, estate accommodation, and protection. After he sells a Wild Boar Ferocious Beast for 3,000 taels, Lin Fan moves his sister Lin Ruoruo and Mao Mao into the estate. 32 34

Protection from the White Ram Gang

The White Ram Gang initially prepares an ambush against Lin Fan with several Bone Tempering Realm allies. It cancels the plan after learning that Su Qingwei granted him a Golden Guest Token, fearing retaliation from the Su Family and its Late Bone Tempering Realm patriarch. 33

Lin Fan’s formal engagement to Su Qingwei further discourages the gang from confronting the Su Family directly, as the marriage makes him a full ally rather than an outside retainer. 44 46

Alchemy Contest

Several senior Pill Pavilion alchemists challenge Lin Fan’s credibility and arrange a public contest overseen by Su Yuanshan. The contest requires refining fifteen batches of pills judged by speed and quality. 39 40

Lin Fan produces fifteen high-grade batches, including simultaneous refinements, while the five veteran alchemists complete only three batches. Su Yuanshan confirms Lin Fan’s victory, raises his salary to 2,000 taels per month, and recognizes his value to the family. 43

Marriage Alliance

Su Yuanshan proposes a marriage between Lin Fan and Su Qingwei, offering family protection and access to resources while seeking a capable husband for his daughter and a powerful ally for the family. Lin Fan accepts based on his affection and respect for Qingwei rather than material gain. 44

The marriage gives the Su Family two Bone Tempering Realm experts—Su Yuanshan and Lin Fan—allowing it to better resist the Black Tiger Gang and White Ram Gang. 44

The family holds an elaborate wedding and prepares Sunset Glow Courtyard as the couple’s residence. Su Qingwei leaves shop management, while Lin Fan continues cultivating and refining pills for the Pill Pavilion. 45 47

Nearly a month later, Lin Fan advances to the Mid Bone Tempering Realm within the courtyard. Su Yuanshan hears the sounds of the breakthrough, arrives with Madam Su and guards, and personally confirms his son-in-law’s progress. 48

Flower Thief Crisis

After learning of the Flower Thief’s crimes, Su Yuanshan increases the estate’s guards, patrols, and nighttime security because of the many women living within the residence. 49 50

Lin Fan supports the family’s defenses by refining high-grade combat pills for strength, endurance, recovery, and explosive power, providing some to Su Yuanshan. 50

When the Flower Thief is suspected of nearing the Bright Force Realm, Su Yuanshan lends Lin Fan the Su Family’s Inner Qi Circulation Method and gifts him a Forging Grade 33 Hundred-Forged Cold-Iron Spear. 53

Lin Fan subsequently enters Late Bone Tempering within Sunset Glow Courtyard. The disturbance spreads through more than half the estate and interrupts Su Yuanshan while he is considering defensive arrangements. 54

After young women from several local martial households are abducted, Su Yuanshan dispatches guards for secret patrols and intelligence gathering, restricts the movement of female family members who practice martial arts, and considers Lin Fan’s suspicion that the Flower Thief is directing the White Ram Gang. 57

The family covertly evacuates some members as the danger grows, but its deep local roots and extensive businesses prevent a full withdrawal from the town. 58

Following Zhou Ling’s abduction, Su Yuanshan orders the household to cooperate fully with the Black Tiger Gang’s investigation rather than provoke conflict between potential allies. Investigators may search the outer courtyards and corridors, while entry into the women’s inner courtyards requires a Su Family escort. He also has Lin Fan informed of the abduction and reminded to guard Qingwei carefully at night. 60

The Black Tiger Gang’s sudden destruction further alarms Su Yuanshan, who had maintained friendly personal and commercial relations with its leader. He orders greater caution as the White Ram Gang absorbs the fallen faction’s territory and businesses. 63

Lin Fan’s breakthrough to the Bright Force Realm restores hope throughout the estate, but the disturbance also alerts enemy spies among its numerous servants. Bai Jingtian reports the advancement to the Flower Thief, who nevertheless proceeds with the planned assault. 64

White Ram Gang Assault

The White Ram Gang and the Bright Force Realm Flower Thief launch a nighttime extermination assault against the Su Family Estate with hundreds of fighters, outside Bone Tempering Realm experts, siege ladders, bows, poison, and hidden weapons. 66

The Flower Thief intends to use the family’s martial artists as material for a Demonic Fiend Weapon and seize its young women, making the attack an attempt to destroy the household rather than merely capture its businesses. 63

Lin Fan detects the approaching force with his newly acquired Bright Force Realm senses. He conceals Su Qingwei and Lin Ruoruo in Sunset Glow Courtyard’s secret chamber, strengthens Qingwei with Inner Qi, and joins Su Yuanshan in organizing the estate’s defenders. 66 67

Su Yuanshan assembles the household’s martial artists, shield-bearing guards, and archers into organized defensive ranks. During the fighting, he faces three Bone Tempering Realm opponents while Lin Fan engages the Flower Thief. 67 68

Although White Ram Gang raiders breach the estate and cause internal destruction, Su Yuanshan leads the guards in suppressing the invaders while Lin Fan confronts the Flower Thief. 69 71

Lin Fan ultimately forces the Flower Thief to self-destruct outside the city and survives the explosion. The Su Family captures the invading gang members, seizes the White Ram Gang’s remaining strongholds and businesses, and imprisons its prisoners. 71

When the explosion shakes the estate, Su Yuanshan sends two teams of elite guards to investigate and search for Lin Fan. The guards find him alive, and his return brings relief to Su Qingwei, Madam Su, and the patriarch. 71

Consolidation of Rival Forces

Following the assault, Lin Fan and Su Yuanshan inspect the White Ram Gang and Black Tiger Gang treasuries and Scripture Repositories. The family organizes the transport and administration of enormous quantities of gold, silver, medicinal herbs, weapons, beast materials, manuals, intelligence records, and other spoils. 72 73

Lin Fan rescues Zhou Hu and Zhou Ling, accepts Zhou Hu’s oath as a guest elder, and gives the displaced Black Tiger Gang survivors refuge within the Su Family. 72

Bai Jingtian is executed for colluding with the demonic path, abducting women, and harming civilians. The captured leaders of the Raging Tide and White Sand Gangs submit after Lin Fan places Inner Qi restraints upon them and advances them from Early to Mid Bone Tempering Realm. 74

The Raging Tide Gang and White Sand Gang are incorporated into the Su Family’s sphere of control. Their members are offered the choice of submission or departure, while their treasuries and Scripture Repositories are placed at Lin Fan and the Su Family’s disposal. 75 76 77

The submitted leaders remain at their own gang headquarters to manage their organizations and need not reside at the Su Family Estate unless pressing business requires it. The family supplies carts and guards to assist with transporting the surrendered resources. 77

On the return journey, Lin Fan promises to help Su Yuanshan reach the Bright Force Realm once his own cultivation improves. The promise reflects their recognition that the family’s wealth and connections require a sufficiently powerful expert to defend them. 77

Postwar Governance

Su Yuanshan consults Lin Fan on the disposition of more than one hundred White Ram Gang prisoners. They adopt a tiered policy: murderers and habitual serious offenders are publicly executed after verification, while lesser accomplices are sentenced to labor repairing roads damaged by the gang and may later be released for good behavior. 80 81

The family investigates the White Ram Gang’s brothels, gambling houses, and moneylending operations. It aids abducted women, executes murderous enforcers, restrains predatory debt practices, and reforms the businesses rather than abruptly abolishing them. 81

Over the following months, the family’s reforms and expanded control restore order and prosperity to the town. Formerly exploitative businesses are replaced or restructured into legitimate enterprises, and ordinary residents regain a greater sense of safety and stability. 93

Lin Fan also instructs the family steward to arrange discreet monitoring and assistance for Small Mountain Village. Reliable agents are to pose as traveling merchants, investigate conditions, and secretly help with food shortages, epidemics, or harassment without drawing attention to the village. 83

Imperial Recognition

The Imperial Court revokes Lin Fan’s old wanted order after recognizing his Bright Force Realm status and his defeat of the demonic Flower Thief. It grants him three million taels of silver, a monthly stipend of one hundred thousand taels, and the title General Pacifying the Lands. 89

The title requires Lin Fan to aid the Imperial Court against serious local banditry or demonic unrest but imposes no fixed official duties. Its prestige strengthens the Su Family’s political security and causes surrounding factions to seek ties with the estate. 89 90

For more than twenty days, the estate receives congratulatory visitors, gifts, and requests for connections. Su Yuanshan handles most guests so that Lin Fan can continue cultivating, while Lin Fan personally receives selected influential figures, including Shi Song of Azure Stone Valley and several gang leaders. 90

Hidden Bright Force Expert

With Lin Fan’s daily transfers of Inner Qi and her own sword practice, Su Qingwei progresses from Skin Tempering to Late Bone Tempering and then successfully enters the Bright Force Realm. 88 91

Lin Fan conceals Qingwei’s breakthrough with an Inner Qi barrier and instructs her to treat her realm as a hidden trump card. When Su Yuanshan and Madam Su later discover the truth, they agree that the secret must be kept even from servants, guards, relatives, and the family steward. 91 94

The secrecy is intended to avoid additional scrutiny from martial factions and the Imperial Court, both already attentive to the family after the Flower Thief’s defeat. Su Yuanshan and Madam Su require servants to leave the main courtyard during future private conversations with Qingwei, reducing opportunities for eavesdropping. 92 94

Su Yuanshan regards the advancement as both a historic blessing and a possible source of disaster. The family has never previously produced a Bright Force expert of its own, yet it still lacks the backing of a great power at this stage; exposing another unusually rapid advancement could attract dangerous attention to both Qingwei and Lin Fan. 93 94

Continuation of the Lineage

Su Qingwei becomes pregnant with twins, whom she and Lin Fan name Lin Luo and Lin Li. Madam Su and the broader Su Family prepare extensively for their arrival. 101

After the twins are born, Lin Fan continues to protect and strengthen his immediate household while preparing to pursue the Transforming Force Realm away from the estate, so that his breakthrough will not endanger the family or expose the Su Residence to unwanted scrutiny. 106

Concealment Research and Transforming Force Advancement

To prepare for his next realm, Lin Fan asks Su Yuanshan to gather Breath Concealment and alchemy texts. The family sends successive teams to the prefectural city, delivering large batches of books to Sunset Glow Courtyard and carefully screening out unnecessary duplicates. The collection grows to at least one thousand volumes. 103 104

Lin Fan subsequently leaves for a remote mountain cave, giving Qingwei one of a pair of linked jade pendants before departing. He enters the Transforming Force Realm, consolidates his power, and returns with his true realm concealed as Early Bright Force. 107 108

He creates a simplified concealment technique for Su Yuanshan, capable of masking Early Bright Force as Late Bone Tempering, and a personalized technique for Qingwei that presents her cultivation as no higher than Muscle Refinement. These measures support his plan to strengthen the estate’s remaining defenders before pursuing opportunities in the larger city. 108

During this period, Lin Fan also assists the authorities in eliminating the Black Mountain Li Family. He returns to Sunset Glow Courtyard with a reward of more than eight million taels in gold and silver, which he stores in his household’s storeroom. The Li Family’s remaining assets and aftermath are left to government officials rather than absorbed into the Su Family’s holdings. 114

Su Yuanshan’s Bright Force Breakthrough

Lin Fan initially postpones helping Su Yuanshan advance because the family is safe and a public breakthrough would be difficult to conceal. He intends to wait until he possesses Transforming Force cultivation. 96

After Su Yuanshan masters the Manifest Force Breath Concealment Technique, Lin Fan spends five days transferring carefully controlled Inner Qi into him. The patriarch overcomes his long-standing Late Bone Tempering bottleneck and reaches the Early Bright Force Realm. Lin Fan suppresses the breakthrough’s disturbance, and Su Yuanshan conceals his new strength with the technique. 114 115

The daily transfers are limited to thirty streams of Inner Qi, the amount Su Yuanshan’s body and meridians can safely absorb without hidden injury. His resulting breakthrough increases his combat strength more than tenfold, while his concealed appearance remains that of a Late Bone Tempering martial artist. 115

Su Yuanshan expresses profound gratitude for the assistance, regarding it as a great kindness to the entire family. Lin Fan explains that he will soon leave for Commandery City and allows the patriarch to decide whether to reveal his true cultivation afterward. 115

Departure for Commandery City

After reaching Mid Transforming Force in secluded cultivation, Lin Fan returns to the estate and prepares to move his immediate household to Commandery City. Su Qingwei and the maids pack the twins’ belongings, books, money, and alchemy supplies, while relatives, neighbors, and acquaintances gather to say goodbye. 117

The household departs in a guarded convoy of more than twenty carriages. Su Yuanshan and Madam Su remain behind, seeing them off from the Su Family Estate. Although Lin Fan could transport the group much faster with his actual cultivation, he uses the convoy to preserve his apparent Early Bright Force status. 117

In Commandery City, Lin Fan rents a quiet three-section courtyard and settles Su Qingwei, Lin Ruoruo, the twins, and several maids. He rewards the accompanying Su Family guards and sends them back to Green Mountain Town to protect the original estate. 119

Refuge under the Azure Elixir Sect

After joining the Azure Elixir Sect as an elder, Lin Fan fears that Ten Thousand Treasures Commerce may retaliate against the Su Family or use its members to threaten him. On his first day at the sect, he sends an urgent letter asking Su Yuanshan to bring all willing family members to Azure Elixir City. 159

Within roughly a dozen days, Su Yuanshan arrives with several hundred relatives, young and old. Lin Fan personally descends from his mountain residence, welcomes them, and purchases a well-appointed city residence. At least half the family relocates, while some branch members remain to watch over the Green Mountain Town holdings. 159

Azure Elixir City’s stable administration and the sect’s martial strength deter Ten Thousand Treasures Commerce from acting openly against the relocated family. Lin Fan can also sense their condition in the city below from his mountaintop residence, providing an additional means of oversight. 159

Lin Fan distinguishes the remaining collateral branches from the relatives close to him. He barely knows those who stay behind and privately decides that their capture would not force him to make concessions to Ten Thousand Treasures Commerce, though he would avenge them afterward if necessary. 159

The arrangement allows the family to resume peaceful life under institutional protection. Lin Fan later reaches the Early Steel Force Realm in secret and returns to the sect without revealing his advancement, preserving the outwardly quiet circumstances of his household and the family under his protection. 159 163 165 166

Failed Hostage Plot

Ten Thousand Treasures Commerce’s Chief Steward sends scouts throughout Azure Cloud Commandery to investigate Lin Fan’s relatives. They establish that Lin Fan married into the Su Family of Green Mountain Town and that his original Lin Family was executed, leaving only him and his younger sister alive. The Chief Steward consequently decides to seize the Su Family as leverage. 162

Before he can dispatch a capture force, the scouts report that every Su Family member connected to Lin Fan by blood or marriage has already withdrawn to Azure Elixir City after receiving his letter. Only collateral branches without direct connections to him remain in Green Mountain Town. The sect’s protection defeats the intended hostage scheme, and the Chief Steward spits blood and collapses unconscious after realizing that his plans have failed. 162
