Orochimaru was Hiruzen Sarutobi’s disciple and a teammate of Jiraiya and Tsunade. He later defected from Konoha and founded Otogakure in the Land of Rice Paddies. The village functioned as his testing ground: every Sound ninja was one of his experimental subjects 1 91 160.

He also maintained a research partnership with Danzō, helping transplant an arm carrying multiple Sharingan and Hashirama Cells. That connection gave him access to the secret that Itachi was supplying Akatsuki intelligence to Konoha 47 60.

Konoha Crush and Tobirama’s Escape

During the Chunin Exams, Orochimaru confronted Hiruzen inside the Sound Four’s barrier. Declaring Konoha decayed, he summoned Hashirama and Tobirama through Impure World Reincarnation; Hiruzen prevented a third coffin marked “Fourth” from fully emerging 1.

Orochimaru suppressed Hashirama’s consciousness with a marked kunai, but Tobirama attacked before receiving the same treatment. Tobirama then released himself from the summoning contract and turned against Orochimaru 2 3.

The ensuing fight exposed Orochimaru’s defensive limits. Water Severing Wave pierced his Triple Rashomon and Earth-Style Wall, forcing him to replace his damaged body. Flying Thunder God Slash severed an arm despite his Kusanagi Sword defense, and Water Dragon Biting Explosion left him buried beneath the rooftop ruins 3 4 5.

The Sound Four evacuated him using a smoke bomb. Tobirama deliberately allowed the escape after placing a Flying Thunder God mark on him, intending to preserve his scientific expertise for later use 5.

Replacement Vessel and Akatsuki Bargain

Poor compatibility and battle damage pushed Orochimaru’s current vessel toward collapse. Kimimaro offered his body, but Orochimaru rejected it because he could not cure Kimimaro’s Bloodline Disease. With Sasuke inaccessible under Tobirama’s protection, he selected Guren instead 35.

After acquiring Crystal Release, Orochimaru approached Pain, Konan, and Sasori. He exposed Itachi’s espionage, demonstrated Impure World Reincarnation by summoning Rasa, and offered an army of deceased Kage-level fighters against Tobirama. Reanimated Army and Madara

Black Zetsu secretly offered Madara’s corpse, asking Orochimaru to revive him without informing Obito. Intrigued by the opportunity, Orochimaru prepared a special vessel that would restore Madara’s youthful appearance 86 107.

At the Valley of the End, Orochimaru and Pain confronted Tobirama and Itachi while other Akatsuki members attacked Konoha’s borders. Orochimaru deployed twelve reanimated warriors, but Hashirama eventually defeated and sealed the army 96 97 106.

After Tobirama decapitated him, Orochimaru escaped and summoned Madara as an emergency defense. He knew his own spiritual power was insufficient to control Madara, yet accepted the risk of releasing an independent undead threat 106 107.

Orochimaru abandoned the confrontation after learning about Infinite Tsukuyomi. He considered a world trapped in illusion unsustainable because society could neither function nor reproduce 108.

Capture and Service to Konoha

Tobirama and the newly cooperative Madara interrupted Orochimaru’s battle with Itachi, overwhelming him with a Water Giant and complete Susanoo. Itachi used Kotoamatsukami to make Orochimaru permanently loyal to Tobirama, while Madara added his own genjutsu to overcome Orochimaru’s resistance 115.

His confidence does not eliminate caution.
