Background / History

Dormammu rose from a trainee soldier to an Imperial general through a career of war. In his younger years, he slaughtered nobles, an act that later left him with influential political enemies inside the Empire. He suspects that these enemies may have helped expose Imperial supply routes to the Allied Forces. 14 15

By the Walden campaign, Dormammu commands the Empire’s Seventh Air Force while facing an increasingly untenable strategic situation: surrounded forces, strained supply lines, hostile occupied populations, and magic-stone costs beyond the military budget. Despite believing this may be his final campaign, he remains focused on finding a way to reverse the Empire’s decline. 14

Dormammu’s victory at Walden’s Lake of Magic Power prevents the political collapse that had threatened his command and turns him into a central military asset for Emperor William. The Emperor subsequently establishes the Imperial Third Air Force Army Group, promotes Dormammu to marshal, and grants him the title of Count Philot and the lordship of Walden Territory. He later holds the higher title of Earl Philot. 76 79 80 92 495

As lord of Walden, Dormammu supports administrative and economic reforms intended to increase the prosperity and tax revenue of Walden Territory while strengthening Emperor William’s position against the Old Guard Party. His growing political influence, however, makes him an increasingly prominent target in the Empire’s factional conflict. 101 276 495

Appearance

Dormammu is an elderly general, described as seventy-four years old, with a severe and intimidating presence. 15

  • White-haired, reflected in his battlefield epithet, the White-Haired Demon General. 19 37
  • Hawk-sharp blue or azure eyes. 14 16
  • Faintly purple lips. 15 111
  • Habitually carries and smokes a pipe. 14 27
  • His rare smiles are described as frightening or ferocious. 16 27
  • Wears a black-and-gold Mage Soldier uniform decorated with numerous medals, including the Level-One Golden Cross Imperial Medal of Honor. 208

Personality

Dormammu is calm, perceptive, and strategically realistic. He recognizes the Empire’s structural weaknesses rather than relying on empty confidence, and he remains composed even when faced with evidence of betrayal and probable defeat. 14

He values capability over procedure. John Maslow’s unauthorized actions are rewarded rather than punished because Dormammu judges results and initiative to be more important than rigid process. 29 He is also willing to use dangerous missions as tests, believing exceptional commanders must be tempered by genuine battlefield hardship. 14 15

Although known for cold severity and deep scheming, Dormammu can show sincere admiration and protectiveness toward soldiers he considers valuable. John’s apparent loyalty convinces him to assign the Black Eagle Special Forces to secretly protect the young officer during the Anti-Magic Device operation. 16

Dormammu is politically cautious despite his hatred of the Old Guard Party and its corruption. When John is transferred to the dangerous Faoken Front through political maneuvering, Dormammu resists but ultimately refuses to deploy the Third Air Force against his domestic opponents, judging that doing so could destabilize the Empire and provoke a coup. 108

His protectiveness can also make him ruthlessly utilitarian. To save John at Faoken, Dormammu is prepared to send elite soldiers, the entire Black Eagle Special Forces, and Sellviya Reinhart into extreme danger, while consciously using Sellviya’s attachment to John to persuade her to undertake the Dragon God Trial. 208

Abilities & Skills

Strategic Command

Dormammu is an accomplished commander capable of assessing battlefield logistics, enemy deception, resource shortages, and internal political threats.

  • Identified the danger posed by compromised Imperial supply routes and the Seventh Air Force’s overstretched position. 14
  • Correctly judged that John’s defiance of patrol orders reflected calculated confidence rather than luck or recklessness. 14
  • Ordered an immediate full-scale assault on Walden after confirmation that the Allied Anti-Magic Device had been destroyed. 27
  • Set a three-hour deadline for the capture of Walden’s Lake of Magic Power. 27
  • Recognized that the Ministry of Military Affairs’ Faoken deployment order was designed to sacrifice John for factional purposes, even though he lacked the authority to rescind it. 111
  • Reinforced John’s battalion with 1,000 Mage Soldiers, regimental-scale logistical support, and 3,000 high-energy magic stones in preparation for the Faoken campaign. 111 119
  • Secretly dispatched 1,000 elite Mage Soldiers and all 736 active Black Eagle Special Forces members to reinforce John when the Faoken Front became critical. 208 264

Talent Appraisal and Political Judgment

Dormammu recognizes and cultivates promising subordinates, while remaining aware that political association with his own faction may endanger their futures.

  • Identified John as a rare military talent after his first battlefield success. 14
  • Tested John through a Deadly Class operation rather than immediately placing him under personal protection. 15
  • Recommended John’s future to Duke Ostan after the Walden victory, acknowledging that Dormammu’s own political circumstances limited what he could do for him. 27
  • Approved a joint-operation structure for the Bahamut mission to avoid accusations that John had exceeded his rank authority. 31
  • Recognized John’s potential as an administrator and political talent after his improvised speech on the governance of occupied territory. 30
  • Supported John’s land-reform proposal for Bahamut Town without hesitation, recognizing that successful local development could strengthen Walden Territory and Emperor William’s reformist position. 101
  • Came to regard John as not only a military successor, but also a political and intelligence strategist capable of shaping the future balance of power within the Empire. 276 289

Political and Administrative Leadership

Following his promotion, Dormammu became a major pillar of Emperor William’s effort to build military and administrative power independent of the Old Guard Party.

  • His elevation to Marshal and lord of Walden Territory gave Emperor William a loyal military counterweight to the noble-controlled First and Second Air Force Armies. 76 79 80
  • Promoted Walden’s economic development through the governance methods pioneered in Bahamut Town and Dragon Eye Domain. 101 276
  • Pressured the Military Affairs Department to provide more than 5,000 recruits for the developing 303rd Division. 306
  • Coordinated with John over the division of authority in Imperial Military Intelligence Section Five, agreeing that their side needed control of the Intelligence Analysis and Strategic Assessment General Bureau. 289
  • Used prior evidence to pressure and deter the Old Guard Party when John was threatened in Ereno. 276
  • Became the subject of a false accusation involving the massacre of prisoners of war; the witnesses later recanted and were executed for falsely accusing an Imperial Marshal. 495

Intelligence and Covert Operations

Dormammu has extensive experience in intelligence, assassination, and reconnaissance operations through his association with the Black Eagle Special Forces.

  • Personally trained the Black Eagle Special Forces, the Empire’s foremost assassination and reconnaissance unit. 64
  • Maintains agents within Allied territory and understands the practical value of covert contacts and military intelligence. 64
  • Uses Jett and the Black Eagles for covert protection, reconnaissance, and emergency reinforcement operations. 16 208
  • Detected the concealed presence of Inspection Forces director Vittorio Osiris through Magic Eye and exposed him during a private strategy meeting. 289

Equipment / Items

  • Matches — Used to light his pipe; his trembling hands repeatedly broke them after the Walden operation’s success. 27
  • Level-One Golden Cross Imperial Medal of Honor — The Empire’s highest individual honor, established under Emperor William; Dormammu is identified as its recipient. 208

Relationships

  • John Maslow — Recognizes John as a genius and potential successor figure for the Empire; repeatedly assigns him high-risk responsibilities, promotes his reputation, and seeks to secure his political future. Dormammu later provides John with extensive resources for Faoken, secretly dispatches reinforcements to save him, protects him against political attacks, and treats him as a valued partner in military-intelligence strategy. 14 15 16 27 29 111 119 208 276 289
  • Major General Jett Slaifute — Trusted subordinate and commander of the Black Eagle Special Forces; Dormammu orders Jett to secretly protect John during the Anti-Magic Device mission. Jett later assists in organizing John’s Faoken support and leads Black Eagle reinforcements. 14 16 119 208 264
  • Lieutenant General Roxy Sankaster — Allied opposing commander who considers Dormammu a dangerous and intelligent adversary, though she anticipates his downfall. 19
  • Duke Ostan — Recipient of Dormammu’s letter recommending John’s future advancement. Their connection also helps establish John’s later cooperation with Imperial naval forces. 27 112
  • Emperor William — Dormammu is one of William’s most important military allies and a key instrument in the Emperor’s effort to counterbalance the Old Guard Party. William promotes him to marshal, grants him Walden Territory, and relies on his Third Air Force Army Group as a new pillar of imperial authority. 76 79 80 92
  • Prime Minister Wolf — Political enemy and leader of the Old Guard Party. Dormammu believes Wolf orchestrated John’s transfer to Faoken as an attempt to have him killed and later views him as a mortal enemy. 108 111
  • Sellviya Reinhart — Initially treated as John’s ally because of John’s personal guarantee. Dormammu later recruits her for the Dragon God Trial, hoping her claim to the Red Dragon and Sea Dragon tribal thrones can bring decisive reinforcements to Faoken; he also recognizes her emotional bond with John and exploits it to motivate her. 208 264
  • Vittorio Osiris — Inspection Forces director and covert protector assigned to John by Emperor William. Dormammu identifies Vittorio’s hidden presence and works alongside him and John during the negotiations over Imperial Military Intelligence Section Five. 289

Story Role / Major Arcs

Walden Front Crisis

Dormammu investigates the capture of an Allied infiltration squad and learns that Imperial supply routes have been compromised. He assesses the Seventh Air Force’s deteriorating position, recognizes John Maslow’s potential, and summons him for evaluation. 14

Anti-Magic Device Operation

Dormammu assigns John and the 14th Mage Soldier Mobile Squad to infiltrate Allied territory and destroy the Anti-Magic Devices suppressing Imperial magic soldiers. Convinced by John’s false speech of absolute patriotism, Dormammu secretly sends Jett and the Black Eagle Special Forces to ensure his survival. 16

Walden Counteroffensive

After the Anti-Magic Device is destroyed, Dormammu turns the operation into an immediate offensive, ordering the Seventh Air Force to seize Walden’s Lake of Magic Power within three hours. The resulting victory restores hope that the Empire’s Mage Soldier forces can survive. 27

John’s Elevation and the Bahamut Assignment

Dormammu publicly favors John during the postwar command meeting, praises his improvised governance speech, and assigns him to lead the suppression and administration of Bahamut Town. When John’s rank proves insufficient for command of 720 soldiers, Dormammu accepts Jett’s joint-operation solution. 29 30 31

The “Maslow Quotations” Campaign

Dormammu orders John’s previous rhetoric to be compiled and taught throughout the army as guidance for the “Empire Spirit.” The campaign unintentionally entrenches John’s public image as an exceptionally loyal Imperial officer. 34

Formation of the Third Air Force Army Group

Following Walden’s capture, Emperor William uses Dormammu’s victory to establish the Imperial Third Air Force Army Group. Dormammu becomes its marshal, receives Count Philot’s title, and is made lord of Walden Territory, creating a new imperial military power center outside the Old Guard Party’s direct control. 76 79 80 92

Walden Reform and Development

Dormammu endorses John’s land-reform and economic-revival plans for Bahamut Town, intending to expand successful methods across Walden Territory. He recognizes that increased territorial revenue can support both regional development and Emperor William’s challenge to Old Guard political control. 101 276

Faoken Crisis

Dormammu unsuccessfully resists the politically motivated transfer of John and his unit to Faoken, where they are ordered to confront the Allied fleet under General Doran’s command. Unable to revoke the order, he gives John 1,000 Mage Soldiers, exceptional logistical support, and access to elite Black Eagle personnel. 108 111 119

Dragon God Trial Reinforcement Plan

With John isolated and outnumbered at Faoken, Dormammu secretly commits 1,000 elite Mage Soldiers and the Black Eagle Special Forces to reinforce him. Believing conventional reinforcements insufficient, he asks Sellviya to undertake the Dragon God Trial and unite the Red Dragon and Sea Dragon Half-Dragon tribes on John’s behalf. 208 264

Imperial Capital Power Struggle

Dormammu travels to Ereno to protect John from Old Guard schemes, uses political evidence to pressure their opponents, and supports the growth of Walden and Dragon Eye Domain. He later works with John to secure influence over the analytical branch of Imperial Military Intelligence Section Five. 276 289

Escalating Factional Conflict

Dormammu becomes a direct target as the struggle between the Reformist Faction and the Old Guard Party escalates. A false accusation linking the Seventh Air Force to a prisoner massacre is ultimately dismissed after the witnesses recant, but the affair demonstrates that even an Imperial Marshal and Earl is vulnerable to political attack. 495
