Background
Carmen was the sole known survivor of a shipwreck that killed her family. Locke found her adrift on a wooden board near Chrisby Island and rescued her. Their shared loneliness quickly developed into friendship, and Carmen later became part of Locke’s household. 2
She told Locke of her ambition to become the world’s greatest chef, and he promised to help her achieve it. Carmen initially used Locke as a taste tester for frequently undercooked or burnt experiments, but steadily improved through practice. 2
When Locke left Chrisby Island to study swordsmanship, Carmen refused to be left behind and joined him immediately. At Shimotsuki Village, she befriended Kuina, trained physically alongside the dojo students, and practiced cooking in the dojo kitchen. 3 7
Kuina’s death affected Carmen deeply; she shut herself away in the kitchen after the funeral. Locke later comforted her by using his abilities to perform music, beginning her habit of asking him for songs. 10 11
Appearance
Carmen is a red-haired girl introduced at around thirteen years old. She is repeatedly described as notably beautiful, a fact she is proud of and occasionally uses to tease others. 1 3 17
- Red hair. 1
- Often carries or works with cooking tools, including a kitchen knife and recipe notebook. 2 39
- During Graveyard Island’s exploration, armed herself with garlic, salt, and a cross out of fear of zombies. 20
Personality
Carmen is cheerful, emotionally expressive, and proud of both her appearance and cooking. She values Locke’s opinion strongly, becoming embarrassed when he compliments her and irritated when he criticizes food she made for him. 1 3
Though initially shy, she grows more outspoken after her time at Shimotsuki Village. She is stubborn when she believes Locke is excluding her or taking unreasonable risks, but consistently follows him into danger when it matters. 17 20 21
Her fear of ghosts, zombies, and Annie’s floating form contrasts with her composure in real crises. When slave-ship sailors surrounded her, she calmly manipulated them into being overwhelmed by freed prisoners; when the Phantom came under attack, she defended it alone. 27 44
Carmen is deeply compassionate. She sympathized immediately with Yun Zhinnan’s grief, searched for food for starving freed slaves, and remained affected by Kuina’s death and Tashigi’s resemblance to her. 17 27 44
