Background

Annie was once a child living on an island whose people worshipped the Divine Tree. Every two hundred years, the tree produced three Devil Fruits, and children aged six to twelve were selected by lot to consume them and serve as guardians. Annie was chosen alongside two other children, but her fruit initially appeared useless; the villagers began rejecting her, though the village chief defended her. 29

A month later, pirates attacked the island. The other guardians were killed while trying to defend it, and the pirates massacred the resisting villagers before killing Annie near the Divine Tree. Her death activated the Ghost Fruit, causing her to rise as a ghost. Overwhelmed by rage, she destroyed the pirates and sank most of the island. Annie later buried the dead and slept in the Divine Tree’s altar, continuing to uphold her duty after everyone she knew had died. 29

When she eventually woke, the Divine Tree had vanished. During Locke’s battle with Sis, Annie sensed the tree’s aura around him after he consumed its crystal. Believing Locke had become the Divine Tree, she trapped Sis in a nightmare to save him, then brought the injured Locke into a dream to question him. Locke accepted her request to travel with him, and Annie pledged to protect him. 29

Appearance

Annie appears as a small blonde girl, initially encountered in Locke’s dream world. In her natural state, she is a translucent ghost with a faint blue glow and can float freely. 28 29 30

  • Transparent blue ghost form manifested after her death. 29
  • Cannot tolerate direct sunlight while in her normal ghost form. 29 33
  • Usually possesses a palm-sized wooden puppet made by Yun Zhinnan for daytime movement. 33 34
  • Can ride a miniature conjured Deathwing, which she calls “Little Black.” 37

Personality

Annie is shy, kind, and intensely attached to Locke. Having spent an extended period alone protecting the Divine Tree, she is eager for his praise and interprets his safety as her personal responsibility. She sees him as both her “big brother” and the Divine Tree she must guard. 29 30

Her emotional maturity remains childlike despite her age. She can be proud after demonstrating her abilities, impatient when Locke prevents her from forcing others to obey, and reluctant to study even after being assigned navigation duties. 32 37

Annie is also possessive of Locke. She views Carmen as a rival for his affection and becomes openly jealous when Carmen is physically close to him. 31 46

Abilities & Skills

Ghost Fruit

Annie’s Devil Fruit power became active only after her death, granting her a ghost form and abilities centered on dreams, fear, and mental interference. 29

  • Enters and manipulates dreams, including dreams formed from Locke’s memories. 28 29
  • Can trap targets in terrifying nightmares, as she did to Sis and the Kuma brothers. 29 30
  • Causes mental confusion and fear rather than the direct physical illusions associated with Locke’s Fruit. 29
  • Can incapacitate weak-willed opponents within her effective range by forcing them into nightmares. 40
  • Learned to cause real internal injuries through dream attacks after Locke taught her the method. 36
  • Her dream interactions can recover deeply buried memories from Locke’s former life. 36

Ghost Physiology and Possession

As a ghost, Annie can appear, disappear, float, and possess objects. 29 30

  • Possesses a small wooden puppet to move safely in daylight. 33
  • Uses the puppet’s small size and flight capability for reconnaissance. 34
  • Cannot withstand direct sunlight in her normal form. 33
  • Is vulnerable to seawater as a Devil Fruit user. 29
