Background / History
Transmigration and life on Chrisby Island
Locke was an unemployed college graduate from Earth who died after being electrocuted while repairing a fuse box. His soul awakened in the body of a seven-year-old boy with the same name in the world of One Piece 1.
His new body belonged to the son of a wealthy merchant from Fresh Peach Town. Locke’s father had vanished at sea, leaving him an ornate house and two shops, but also leaving him vulnerable as a child with a valuable inheritance and no immediate family protection 1. To survive in a world he knew was dangerous, Locke trained his body and swordsmanship independently while searching for Shimotsuki Village 1.
Two years before leaving Chrisby Island, Locke rescued Carmen from a shipwreck that killed her family. Their shared isolation developed into a close friendship, and Locke promised to support her ambition of becoming the world’s greatest chef 2.
Shimotsuki Village apprenticeship
Locke accidentally ate the Illusion-Illusion Fruit shortly before departing for Shimotsuki Village. Initially disappointed by its inability to directly harm opponents, he experimented with creating figures, scenery, and other projections from purple light 2 4.
At Koushirou’s dojo, Locke was defeated by Kuina because his solid fundamentals could not compensate for his lack of real combat experience. Koushirou accepted him as a disciple and later named him senior to Kuina and Zoro 7. Locke became Zoro’s roommate and regular sparring partner, while Carmen befriended Kuina and trained as a cook 7.
Following Kuina’s funeral, Locke continued training with Zoro and Carmen. His first lethal battle against the Haribun Pirates exposed the gap between his swordsmanship and experienced opponents; he survived only by using deception and accepting serious injuries 11 12 13. He subsequently focused on swordsmanship and stamina, eventually learning to cut steel before leaving the village at sixteen to seek stronger opponents and life-or-death combat 13 14.
Appearance
Locke is described as a handsome young man. At sixteen, he had grown to approximately two meters tall 1 13.
- Wears a custom windbreaker embroidered with dragon patterns, designed as a reminder of his former life 3.
- Fights with a Tang-style dao rather than the more common swords used at Koushirou’s dojo 6.
- His blade bears the Chinese engraving “Thousand Chill” 6.
- Often manifests purple light or flames while using the Illusion-Illusion Fruit 2 24.
Personality
Locke is cautious, disciplined, and survival-driven. Knowing how dangerous the world is, he refused to rely on wealth alone and trained constantly from childhood 1. His desire for strength comes from a belief that only the strong can control their own fate 6.
He is also practical rather than purely idealistic. He rescued the Kuma brothers from traffickers because he opposed slavery, but also because he hoped to obtain a Devil Fruit for Carmen 21. As captain, he prefers voluntary loyalty over forced obedience, allowing the brothers to decide whether to join his crew after returning home 32.
Despite his blunt humor and tendency to tease Carmen and Zoro, Locke is deeply protective of his companions. He repeatedly puts himself in danger for civilians, crewmates, and friends, and his ambition to change the world is tied to both his hatred of corruption and his dissatisfaction with the life he lost on Earth 11 18 36 46.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship
Locke is a Tang-style swordsman whose skill developed from self-training into formal instruction under Koushirou.
- Uses speed, timing, feints, and deceptive footwork rather than relying solely on raw strength 12.
- Learned to cut steel after three years of continued dojo training 13.
- Was initially inferior to Haribun in physical strength, swordsmanship, and combat experience 13.
- Uses his Devil Fruit to create openings, clones, and false attacks around his swordsmanship 12 25.
Illusion-Illusion Fruit
The Illusion-Illusion Fruit initially allowed Locke to create visual projections from thin air. After awakening, those projections gained physical force.
- Creates figures, terrain, miniature scenes, and recreations of characters from his previous life 2 4.
- Can conceal himself and companions by making observers see the background behind them; strong sunlight makes this camouflage easier to expose 20.
- Illusion: Shadow Trick — creates a duplicate to confuse an opponent’s targeting 12.
- Phantom: Blade Flash — uses deceptive sword imagery and optical invisibility to conceal the true attack 12.
- Before awakening, most phantom attacks lacked physical damage and could be vulnerable to Observation Haki 13.
- After consuming the Awakening Fruit, his illusions can become real and use imagined forms or abilities; their power depends on his stamina expenditure 24.
- Phantom: Demon King — manifests an eight-meter purple-flamed demon armed with a massive hammer 24.
- Can create large-scale elemental constructs, including ice giants, weapons, meteor attacks, and flame-based assaults 36 40.
- Uses remembered imagery from films, anime, and television as the basis for new techniques, with Annie helping recover forgotten memories through dreams 36.
True Qi
Locke cultivates a nameless technique from Yun Zhinnan’s homeland.
- Gradually improves his true qi reserves and stamina more efficiently than physical training alone 37.
- Can coat his Tang Dao in True Qi immediately before impact to damage Devil Fruit users, including Logia users such as Smoker 43.
- True Qi can partially restrain elemental transformation, though it does not completely negate it 43.
- His limited proficiency prevents him from effectively using True Qi and his Devil Fruit powers at the same time 43.
Tactical Deception
Locke consistently uses misdirection and psychological pressure against stronger enemies.
- Deliberately allowed Haribun to “understand” his false attacks before killing him from behind 12.
- Infiltrated slave traffickers by killing and disguising himself as a rear guard 21.
- Stalled Sis with boasts and mockery until his awakening stabilized 24.
- Exploited Sis’s impatience by overwhelming him with regenerating phantoms and false openings 25 26.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Tang Dao / “Thousand Chill” — Locke’s primary cold-iron blade, forged by Iron Yi and engraved in Chinese as a link to his former life 3 6.
- Wooden Tang-style practice sword — a self-made training weapon used during his initial assessment at Koushirou’s dojo 6.
- Phantom — former merchant ship purchased by Locke; approximately eleven to twelve meters long, fitted with orange trees and a bird-shaped ram 18.
- Haki booklet — given by Koushirou, who warned Locke that his body was initially not strong enough for serious Haki training 14.
- Treasure map — discovered in his father’s study and used to lead the Phantom Pirates to Tomb Island 19.
Relationships
- Carmen — Closest childhood friend and traveling companion. Locke rescued her after a shipwreck, promised to support her culinary dream, and later made her the Phantom Pirates’ cook; their relationship is marked by mutual care, teasing, and visible affection 2 3 13 30.
- Ross — Elderly family butler who helped manage Locke’s inheritance after his father disappeared. Locke calls him “Grandpa Ross” and treats him as family 2 17 18.
- Koushirou — Locke’s swordsmanship master. Koushirou accepted him as a disciple, corrected his self-taught flaws, and provided information about Haki before Locke left Shimotsuki Village 7 14.
- Roronoa Zoro — Former roommate, daily sparring partner, and rival. Their constant duels developed into a close friendship, and they vowed to meet again at sea 7 14.
- Kuina — Fellow dojo disciple and Carmen’s best friend. Kuina defeated Locke in their first spar, earning his respect; Locke later resolved to prevent the fate he remembered for her, but she was ultimately buried before the Haribun attack 7 8 11.
- Yun Zhinnan — Shipwright and crewmate from Great Xia. Locke believed Yun’s account of another continent, recruited him, and later received the nameless True Qi technique from him 16 17 37.
- Annie — Ghost Fruit user who considers Locke the vessel of the Divine Tree. Locke accepted her as a companion, guides her behavior, and treats her with a protective, fatherly affection 29 30 37.
- Big Bear, Second Bear, and Panda — Former slave captives and Devil Fruit users whom Locke rescued on Tomb Island. They later joined his crew after the destruction of their village and became committed to his cause 31 36.
- Smoker — Marine opponent whom Locke personally respects as one of the few Marines who sincerely pursues justice, despite opposing the Marine system as a whole 43.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Formation of the Phantom Pirates
After returning to Chrisby Island with Carmen and Yun Zhinnan, Locke chose piracy over becoming a Marine or pirate hunter, believing it offered the freedom needed to grow stronger and oppose the World Government. He purchased the Phantom and formally founded the Phantom Pirates 18 19.
Tomb Island and Fruit Awakening
On Tomb Island, Locke discovered a human-trafficking operation targeting the Kuma brothers. He infiltrated the traffickers, stole the Awakening Fruit, and awakened the Illusion-Illusion Fruit during his battle with Sis 21 24. Annie trapped Sis in a nightmare at the decisive moment, enabling the critically injured Locke to kill him 26 29.
Recruitment and Bisi Island massacre
Locke freed the traffickers’ slaves and refused to force the Kuma brothers into joining him, instead offering to accompany them home 32. On Bisi Island, the crew found the brothers’ village massacred and concluded that Marines had framed the Phantom Pirates for the crime 34.
Revenge against the 16th Marine Branch
After burying the villagers, Locke committed the Phantom Pirates to avenging Bisi Island. He used an ice construct to destroy three approaching Marine warships and led an assault against the East Blue 16th Marine Branch, ordering his crew to focus on officers rather than ordinary soldiers 36 40.
During the assault, Locke fought Smoker with True Qi-enhanced swordsmanship while sending Annie after Colonel Nezumi 43. The Marines later issued an 80-million-Beli bounty for Locke, falsely accusing the crew of massacring Bisi Island and attacking the Marine Branch 47.
