Background

Yun Zhinnan was born into a servant branch of Great Xia’s Yun Family. His father was also a servant and taught him carpentry. After eating a patterned fruit in childhood, Yun gained exceptional speed, drawing the attention of the Yun Family’s head and earning a chance to rise beyond his original station. 16

In the capital, Yun fell in love with Xi Cai. Her family forced her into an arranged marriage; when Yun disrupted the wedding, he discovered that Xi Cai had taken her own life. In grief, he killed her intended husband and became the target of a nationwide manhunt. 16

With nowhere left to flee, Yun crossed Great Xia’s forbidden Wilderness and entered a spatial rift, which transported him to the sea. Injured and dismissed as delusional by sailors, he was believed by Locke, who recognized the unfamiliar Great Xia script embroidered on Yun’s clothing. 16

Locke offered Yun a place aboard his future ship, both because Yun had no knowledge of the new world and because his carpentry background could be developed into shipwright work. Yun accepted after several days of conversation and traveled with Locke and Carmen to Chrisby Island. 16 17

Appearance

Yun is a very handsome, approximately two-meter-tall young man with a noticeably melancholy bearing. When first brought to Chrisby Island, he was severely thin from his ordeal but had begun recovering his weight. 17 22

  • Perpetually sorrowful eyes associated with his grief for Xi Cai. 17
  • Initially wore tattered Great Xia clothing embroidered with the character for “Yun.” 16
  • Carries Xi Cai’s jade pendant, engraved with the character “Cai.” 16
  • His stature is diminished beside much larger opponents such as the three-meter-tall Ham. 22

Personality

Yun is quiet, composed, and practical. He generally follows Locke’s plans without argument, serves as a calm counterpoint during Carmen’s emotional outbursts, and focuses on useful work such as ship maintenance, scouting, and training the crew. 19 21 38

Xi Cai’s death remains central to his identity. He carries her pendant and wants to travel the world so that her memory can experience it with him. His grief is joined by lingering regret that he was not fast enough to save her. 16 17

Although restrained in ordinary conversation, Yun is ruthless toward human traffickers and corrupt Marines. He kills Ham after identifying him as a slaver, captures fleeing Marines during the Bisi Island retaliation, and refuses Lieutenant Commander Sofira’s plea for mercy. 22 35

Abilities & Skills

Speed-Enhancing Fruit Ability

Yun’s patterned fruit grants him extraordinary movement speed. Locke believes it is likely a speed-type Devil Fruit, though its exact name and classification remain unconfirmed. 16 20

  • Can vanish from sight during short bursts of movement and rapidly scout hostile territory. 20
  • Cleared the slave ship’s deck crew before confronting Ham. 22
  • Uses speed to evade attacks, infiltrate enemy positions, and capture opponents before they can react. 22 35
  • His speed is limited by his body’s durability; forcing greater acceleration can severely injure or incapacitate him. 20 42
  • Locke speculates that an awakened form could potentially stop time briefly, but this remains unconfirmed. 20

True Qi

Yun has practiced True Qi since childhood, describing it as similar to Haki while retaining important differences. 33

  • Can use True Qi to reduce incoming damage. 42
  • Supports his internal-force techniques and physical endurance. 22 42
  • Requires ongoing cultivation and does not fully compensate for the strain caused by his fastest techniques. 42

Mountain-Penetrating Strike

A subtle internal-force technique used against opponents whose outer defenses cannot be broken through directly. 22

  • Damages internal organs through repeated strikes rather than external impact. 22
  • Allowed Yun to defeat Ham, whose durability rendered conventional kicks ineffective. 22
  • Requires an opponent to endure or underestimate repeated attacks long enough for internal damage to accumulate. 22

Speed God Kick

Yun’s escalating speed-based kicking techniques convert acceleration into destructive power. 42

  • Whirlwind Kick creates a whirlwind to divide an opponent’s attention. 42
  • Threefold Speed God Kick enables sustained high-speed exchanges. 42
  • Fivefold Speed God Kick creates openings against a faster or more experienced defender. 42
  • Tenfold Speed God Kick overpowers Old Qin’s Iron Body, but pushes Yun beyond his physical limit and leaves him unconscious. 42

Shipwright and Carpenter

Yun learned carpentry from his father and rapidly adapted those skills to ship repair after arriving in the new world. 16 18

  • Learned the sea’s writing system in ten days and the fundamentals of ship repair in twenty. 18
  • Serves as the Phantom’s shipwright and chooses quarters near the storeroom for convenient repairs. 18
  • Crafted Annie’s small articulated wooden puppet, allowing her to move in sunlight through possession. 33 34

Combat Training

Yun trains the Kuma brothers in fighting techniques and Devil Fruit control. 38 41

  • Helped Big Bear, Second Bear, and Panda develop their Zoan transformations beyond simply charging in bear form. 41
  • Continued supervising training despite being seriously injured after the Marine Branch battle. 46

Equipment / Items

  • Xi Cai’s jade pendant — A pendant engraved with “Cai,” carried as a memorial to Xi Cai and touched whenever Yun reflects on her. 16 17
  • Peachwood dagger — Brought to Graveyard Island as protection against suspected supernatural threats. 20
  • Haki training manual — Given to him by Locke after the events on Tomb Island. 33

Relationships

  • Locke — Captain, recruiter, and trusted companion. Locke believed Yun’s account of Great Xia, recruited him as shipwright, and later gave him Haki training materials. 16 17 33
  • Carmen — Fellow Phantom Pirate. Carmen sympathizes deeply with Yun’s loss of Xi Cai, while Yun often endures her complaints with quiet patience. 17 21 22
  • Xi Cai — Deceased lover. Yun’s attempt to stop her arranged marriage led to his exile; he travels with her pendant so that her memory may see the world. 16 17
  • Big Bear, Second Bear, and Panda — Crewmates and trainees. Yun intensifies their training before the assault on the East Blue 16th Marine Branch, and Big Bear and Second Bear later protect him after his battle with Old Qin. 38 42
  • Annie — Crewmate for whom Yun built a small wooden puppet body, allowing her to remain active in sunlight. 33 34
  • Old Qin — Marine gatekeeper defeated by Yun’s Tenfold Speed God Kick; their battle exposes both Yun’s offensive potential and his physical limitations. 42
