Background / History
Beiyuan Heng is a transmigrator who grew up in a World Government training base with a trait-based growth panel. From childhood, he deliberately built a persona of a diligent prodigy, discovering that training, achievement, and other people’s recognition could generate or improve his traits. He trained continuously from the age of nine, learned the Six Powers within three years, and developed Life Return and original Six Powers applications soon afterward. 1 2
During CP9’s Crown Hao Island selection, Heng deliberately drew attention by practicing sword forms with an oversized barbell-greatsword while moving under Iron Body. He sought a larger stage, stronger opponents, and the recognition needed to continue developing; Rob Lucci, then regarded as CP9’s greatest genius in eight hundred years, was his chosen benchmark. 1
Heng passed the selection with an 850 Doriki score, defeated Jabra, and entered CP9. He then challenged Lucci directly for first place, defeated him with advanced Six Powers techniques and Rokuogan, and was appointed the new CP9 commander, with Lucci as his second-in-command. 3 4 6 7
Although initially a Cipher Pol agent, Heng repeatedly acted openly and tested how much independence CP9 would tolerate. After rescuing all 500 captured soldiers in Karandi Kingdom and defeating the Iron Hook Pirates, he concluded that successful results gave him wide latitude despite CP9’s supposed secrecy. 9 12
Two and a half years later, Spandine arranged Heng’s secondment to Marine Headquarters because his conspicuous conduct no longer suited covert work. He served publicly as a Marine officer while retaining his secret CP9 identity, patrolled the Sabaody Archipelago, defeated Ryan Hunter, and developed a growing reputation among Marines and civilians. 13 15 23
At Sabaody, Heng chose to aid escaped slaves and the Boa sisters rather than serve the World Government’s interests. He later stated that his justice was for oppressed ordinary people, not the Celestial Dragons or the World Government. His actions earned Rayleigh’s respect and led to an overwhelming but valuable sparring lesson. 34 35
After publicly revealing Conqueror’s Haki at Marineford and displaying Armament Haki capable of injuring Zephyr, Heng became Zephyr’s personal disciple and inheriting successor. He then deliberately used the release of their battle footage to establish himself as a prominent young Marine. 42 46 47 49
Appearance
Beiyuan is described as a handsome, upright youth who later grows into a towering and physically formidable fighter through training and Life Return. He commonly appears in a white suit or Marine uniform. 11 13 32
- Trained at age twelve with a greatsword-sized weighted barbell that damaged reinforced flooring. 2
- Possesses an exceptionally powerful physique, repeatedly mistaken for something beyond ordinary human limits. 11 44
- His white suit remained undamaged after walking through cannon fire during the Karandi operation. 11
- Carries the famed blade Demon Cutter during his Marine service. 25 29
Personality
Heng is ambitious, calculating, and highly conscious of public perception. He intentionally creates dramatic displays, cultivates favorable impressions, and engineers opportunities for recognition because his growth panel rewards awareness and reputation. His outward humility is often deliberate, particularly when dealing with Marine leadership and prospective mentors. 1 42 43 47
Despite this strategic self-interest, Heng has a genuine protective streak. He rejects Lucci’s belief that weak soldiers deserve death, insists on saving civilians and subordinates, and opposes the World Government’s oppression of ordinary people. 9 34
He is calm under pressure and actively seeks stronger opponents as a source of growth. Defeat by Rayleigh does not discourage him; instead, it excites him because it reveals the distance he still needs to cross. 24 34 35
Abilities & Skills
Trait-Based Growth Panel
Heng possesses a private panel that grants traits through training, public recognition, professional acknowledgment, and major accomplishments.
- Traits improve his physical ability, learning speed, recovery, social influence, Haki aptitude, and reputation. 1 7 49
- Recognition is a central resource: his fame-related traits increase awareness of him and can strengthen him in regions where he is known. 14 24 43
- Occupations also provide passive benefits; his CP9 agent, Marine officer, and swordsman identities each improve relevant capabilities. 24
- Heng recognizes that traits are enhancements rather than substitutes for personal strength and continued training. 50
Six Powers and Life Return
Heng has mastered the Six Powers beyond normal CP9 standards and developed multiple personalized variations.
- Can move while using Iron Body, an application normally considered incompatible with movement. 1
- Uses Moonwalk: Treading Void, a Geppo and Paper Arts variation that allows him to walk through the air and combine aerial movement with Soru. 2 3
- Uses Iron Body: Utsugi to endure attacks and reflect force back onto an opponent. 4 6
- Uses Iron Body: Utsugi Resonance to redirect an enemy’s force through his body and back into their weapon. 21
- Employs advanced Rankyaku techniques, including Cross Slash, Tail Whip, and Entangling Shadow. 6
- Uses Rokuogan, the Six Powers secret art, to send a destructive shockwave directly into an opponent’s body. 6 22
- Has mastered Life Return, enabling stamina recovery, bodily control, accelerated digestion, and efficient conversion of food into energy. 2 8
Imitation and Combat Analysis
Heng can analyze and reproduce techniques after limited observation, frequently improving on the originals.
- Copied Jabra’s Wolf Fang Fist after seeing it once. 5
- Reproduced Lucci’s Rankyaku: Tail Whip with greater scale and solidity. 6
- Identifies weaknesses in opponents’ techniques and offers precise criticism during sparring. 13 25
- His Six Powers Pinnacle trait makes unfamiliar Six Powers techniques easier to understand and counter in battle. 7
Haki
Heng possesses all three forms of Haki, though his Observation Haki remains less developed than his Armament Haki.
- Conqueror’s Haki — awakened by Chapter 40; its initial release knocks out most ordinary sailors over a wide area. 40
- Armament Haki — can coat his limbs, combine it with Iron Body, and reinforce Rokuogan with Haki. 45
- Internal-destruction-like Rokuogan — channels Armament Haki through Rokuogan into an opponent’s body, injuring Zephyr despite his durability. 45 46
- Observation Haki — instinctively senses danger and assists his evasive movement; later gains the Observation Haki Basics trait. 45 49
- His Haki development is accelerated by his Haki Mastery and Armament Haki Peak traits. 49
Physical Ability and Durability
Heng’s physique is the foundation of his combat style.
- Possesses overwhelming strength, speed, reaction time, stamina efficiency, and recovery due to accumulated traits and relentless training. 7 14
- Walked through cannon and mortar fire without injury, leading to the evolution of Iron Skin and Iron Bones. 11 12
- Can catch a spiked club barehanded with Iron Body despite enough force to shatter his sword. 21
- His later Indestructible Body trait grants continually improving durability and a rebounding defensive effect. 49
- Iron Grip gives him hand strength sufficient to deform or crush ordinary steel. 24
Swordsmanship
Heng is a recognized swordsman whose technique is supplemented by exceptional physical strength and Six Powers movement.
- Wields Demon Cutter, one of the Fifty Skillful Blades. 25
- Earned the swordsman occupation after a Wano samurai sparred with him and recognized his potential as a top-tier swordsman. 24
- Can assess technical flaws in opposing sword styles, including Hatchan’s Six-Sword Dance. 25
- His swordsman occupation improves his understanding of sword techniques and makes his handling more fluid. 24
Swimming and Underwater Combat
Unlike many Devil Fruit users, Heng is an exceptionally capable swimmer.
- Uses Swimming Mastery and later Swimming Pinnacle to move freely underwater with reduced stamina consumption and enhanced recovery. 26 29
- Can evade Fish-Man Karate and Fish-Man Jujutsu attacks in the sea while closing distance on fish-man opponents. 26
- His Fish-Man Friend trait improves fish-men’s initial disposition toward him and slightly boosts underwater mobility and combat ability. 29
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Demon Cutter — a famed blade counted among the Fifty Skillful Blades; carried during his Sabaody patrols and battles against fish-men. 25 29
- CP9 full-head mask — received upon joining CP9, though its use is optional; Heng avoids wearing it because it interferes with his perception-based trait acquisition. 4
Relationships
- Rob Lucci — primary rival and former CP9 subordinate. Heng defeated him for CP9’s top rank, while Lucci repeatedly trains and spars in an effort to surpass him. 2 7 8 13
- Laskey — CP9 recruiter, examiner, and early superior who recognizes Heng’s unusual Iron Body training and formally appoints him CP9 commander. 1 2 7
- Kalifa — initially dismisses Heng as an attention-seeker, but later respects his strength and worries about his departure from CP9. 1 7 13
- Spandine — CP9 chief whose relationship with Heng becomes openly hostile as Heng grows more independent and rejects his orders. 12 50
- Sengoku — Marine Fleet Admiral who values Heng’s potential but remains wary of his Cipher Pol origins and hidden loyalties. 15 43
- Zephyr — mentor and designated predecessor. Zephyr recognizes Heng’s extraordinary physical and Haki potential, then accepts him as his inheriting disciple. 44 46
- Kizaru — influential Marine sponsor who recommends Heng to Zephyr after observing his potential. 28
- Garp — recognizes Heng’s strength and potential but bluntly refuses to accept him as a disciple. 15 44
- Hina — trusted Marine subordinate who supports Heng in battle, warns him about rumors, and helps manage the consequences of his actions. 23 47
- Smoker — Marine subordinate whose loyalty is shown when he attacks Marines who insult or question Heng’s strength. 47
- Silvers Rayleigh — respects Heng’s ideals after learning that he helped fish-men and escaped slaves; decisively overwhelms him in a sparring match. 34 35
- Boa Hancock and her sisters — escaped slave children whom Heng protects and arranges to escort toward Amazon Lily. 34 36
