Background / History

Rayleigh once served as the Pirate King’s right-hand man and vice-captain of the Roger Pirates. After the crew disbanded, he and Shakky withdrew to the Sabaody Archipelago, where they lived quietly around Shakky’s Rip-off Bar. Decades earlier, Rayleigh used Other Shore Blade to defeat a member of the God’s Knights and rescue Shakky. 34 36

During the aftermath of Fisher Tiger’s slave liberation, Rayleigh encountered Hatchan, who had previously saved his life. After hearing Hatchan’s account of Marine Commodore Beiyuan Heng allowing fish-men and freed slaves to escape, Rayleigh helped protect the escaped slaves and brought Sandersonia and Marigold to Shakky’s bar. 33 34

Rayleigh initially scrutinized Heng as a potential threat to the Boa sisters. Once Heng explained his attempt to return Hancock and her sisters to Amazon Lily, Rayleigh came to respect his opposition to the World Government’s oppression and his commitment to protecting ordinary people. 33 34
