Background / History

Teach spent years aboard Whitebeard’s ship waiting for the Dark-Dark Fruit. After Thatch obtained it, Teach murdered him, stole the fruit, and defected. He hid within Whitebeard’s territory until the pursuit had cooled, then escaped with Jesus Burgess while declaring his intention to recruit companions and begin the “era of Blackbeard” 18.

While travelling, Teach encountered Rockstar, a Red Hair Pirates messenger carrying Shanks’s letter to Whitebeard. Though initially inclined to rob him, Teach chose not to provoke Shanks and gave Rockstar directions instead 18.

Soon afterward, Lynn descended onto the ships seeking Rockstar’s letter. Teach initially considered Lynn’s potential useful, but rejected the idea of recruiting Kaido’s adopted son as too dangerous and uncontrollable 19. Once Lynn incapacitated Rockstar, Teach attempted to steal the letter himself and attacked Lynn from behind 20.

Teach’s Dark Water failed to affect Lynn because Lynn was not a Devil Fruit user. Lynn then used Amaterasu to set Teach’s chest ablaze; Teach could only extinguish the black flames by expending nearly all of his Conqueror’s Haki, leaving a severe burn scar 20 21. Lynn subsequently opened the Seventh Gate and defeated him with a kick that sent Teach, Burgess, and their ship into the sea 22.

Badly injured, Teach ordered a retreat to Paradise, prioritizing recruitment and survival over his immediate ambitions. He vowed not to provoke Lynn again until he had sufficient power to confront him 23. Even after later assembling more companions, Teach remained wary of Lynn’s strength while insisting that his future plans would ultimately surpass every Emperor 39.

He abandoned his plan to rob Rockstar after learning that Rockstar served Shanks, recognizing that a confrontation with the Red Hair Pirates was too dangerous 18. Likewise, after facing Lynn, Teach suppressed his dream of immediately dominating the New World in favor of retreating, recruiting, and avoiding a foe he could not yet defeat 23.
