Story Role / Major Arcs

Chunin Exams conflict

Kumo-nin participate in the escalating violence surrounding Konoha's Chunin Exams. Alongside Mist and Sand forces, Cloud ninja target Konoha Genin, while the competing villages also begin fighting one another. Darui is identified as one of the formidable foreign ninja involved. 38

Battle for Sakamoto Outpost

Sakamoto Outpost becomes a critical objective in the Land of Hot Water because its mountain-surrounded terrain makes it easy to defend and places it between the Konoha and Kumo camps. After Konoha retakes the outpost, Kumo-nin retaliate swiftly and cut off contact with its garrison. 109

A Kumo-nin force of at least one hundred elite reinforcements advances toward the outpost. Qifeng, operating under the identity of Sarutobi Hiruzen, confronts them with Magnet Release. 115 116

Natsui responds with a Lightning Release barrier, but Qifeng breaks through it and turns the battlefield's metal into a lethal Iron Sand killing field. The surviving Kumo-nin retreat after suffering severe losses. 117 119

Kumogakure's counterattack

Following the Sakamoto defeat, Kumogakure issues Konoha a direct battle challenge. Despite holding a major numerical advantage, their frontline forces struggle to overcome Qifeng's Iron Sand techniques. 126 128

Dodai and Toroi personally enter the battle to restore Kumo-nin morale. Toroi is immediately killed, while Dodai attempts to delay Qifeng with four Cloud Jonin and a coordinated barrier formation. 128 129 131

After Dodai is killed, Yugito Nii unleashes the Two-Tails. Qifeng exploits the incomplete transformation by drawing the tailed beast's attacks into the Kumo-nin ranks, causing catastrophic friendly-fire losses. 132 134

Defeat in the Land of Hot Water

Kumogakure's defeat becomes a major victory for Konoha. Reports place Kumo-nin losses at roughly 1,600 personnel, including 75 Jonin; casualties directly caused by the Two-Tails are excluded from the initial confirmed count. Dodai and Yugito Nii are both killed. 138

The loss of a Kage Advisor and the Two-Tails severely damages Kumogakure's position and contributes to the rise of Sarutobi Hiruzen's “Spear of Judgment” reputation across the ninja world. 142

Conflict with Iwagakure
