Background / History

Yu Xiaogang is a former member of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan who was expelled from it. Unable to advance beyond level 29, he built his reputation around martial-soul theory, studying and compiling the work of earlier researchers into The Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul. He maintains that his research has helped Soul Masters avoid incompatible Soul Rings and fatal absorption failures. 10 11 24

At Notting City Junior Soul Master Academy, Yu Xiaogang takes notice of Tang San after learning that the boy possesses Innate Full Soul Power. He deduces that Tang San has Twin Martial Souls, brings him into the academy after the gatekeeper's confrontation, and persuades him to become his personal disciple. 9

Yu Xiaogang's attention shifts to Wang Tianyi after Wang reveals that he is a six-year-old, level 14 One-Ring Soul Master. Seeing Wang as a potential future Titled Douluo and a means to validate his theories, Yu repeatedly tries to recruit him despite Wang's open contempt. 10 11 12

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is highly proud of his theoretical work and reacts angrily when Wang Tianyi challenges his famous maxim or questions the authority of a level 29 Soul Grandmaster. He insists that the title “Master” was bestowed upon him by commoner Soul Masters rather than claimed by himself. 10

His pursuit of exceptional talent is persistent and opportunistic. After being rejected by Wang Tianyi, he follows the child through the academy, dormitory, and even onto a roof in an effort to recruit him. He later sees both Tang San's Clear Sky Hammer and Wang's unusual Martial Soul as opportunities to establish his own reputation. 12 16

Yu Xiaogang is supportive and persuasive toward Tang San, using encouragement, instruction, and gifts to reinforce their teacher-disciple bond. However, after his public humiliation, he privately decides that Wang Tianyi should be eliminated and manipulates Tang Hao's concern for Tang San to turn the Clear Sky Douluo against him. 15 23 24

Recruitment of Wang Tianyi

After learning Wang Tianyi's cultivation level, Yu Xiaogang rapidly changes from anger to eager recruitment. He follows Wang throughout the academy, recommends a plant- and poison-oriented Soul Ring for Wang's assault-type Martial Soul, and refuses to accept rejection. 10 11 12

Defeat at Notting Academy

Wang Tianyi responds to Yu Xiaogang's persistence by striking him with the Ruyi Jingu Bang, causing severe facial injuries. Yu later intervenes in Tang San's duel with Wang, but Luo Sanpao's shared-damage trait leaves him injured and publicly humiliated alongside his disciple. 13 21 22
