Gaining and developing a power

• Eating a Devil Fruit grants its ability. Kano gains the Dice-Dice Fruit’s blade power, while Faraday begins transforming into lightning immediately after eating the Rumble-Rumble Fruit 43 190.
• Development depends on the user. Li Yuan cautions that the Comet Fruit’s potential requires Ares to train it, and Yumaz cannot yet achieve applications Li Yuan believes possible for his Fusion Fruit 190 271.
• A fruit’s ability remains with its user for life, making suitability an important consideration when choosing one 190 271.
• Devil Fruits taste intensely unpleasant. Claims that a user must finish the entire fruit to avoid weakening its power are presented by Li Yuan as something he made up to tease Kano; other characters later repeat the warning 43 190 271.

Weaknesses

• Users lose strength when exposed to the sea or Seastone. Li Yuan warns Asura Doji that falling into the sea would leave him unable to save himself, and Akame is restrained with Seastone handcuffs 151 190.
• The Dark-Dark Fruit can suppress or nullify other Devil Fruit powers, making it especially dangerous to users 105 112.
• Developing an ability can compete with other training. Li Yuan warns Asura Doji that reliance on a fruit might slow his progress toward becoming a Great Swordsman 151.

Awakening

• Awakening can extend or intensify a fruit’s abilities. Brandon’s awakened Muscle-Muscle Fruit turns surrounding terrain into an extension of his muscles, while Whitebeard’s awakened Tremor-Tremor Fruit produces much greater effects with less effort 333.
• Akame’s awakened Nue Form lets her curse opponents without touching them, overcoming a restriction of her unawakened power 485.
• Li Yuan reports improvements to both his physique and Vampire abilities after awakening 480 481.

Acquisition and Uses

• Devil Fruits are valuable loot and trade goods. Li Yuan identifies finds with a Devil Fruit Encyclopedia and distributes fruits to subordinates and family members according to their abilities or intended roles 43 62 189.
• Forty Devil Fruits are offered at the Pirate Expo auction, where even ordinary Zoan and Paramecia types command high prices 221.
• The Op-Op Fruit’s reported ability to grant eternal life prompts competing bids of five billion Berry from the World Government and six billion from the Quicksand Guild 379.
• Fruits can also power objects: Caesar makes a storage bracelet using the Castle Fruit, and Li Yuan gives the Blood-Blood Fruit to his Seven Star Sword 298 347.

Artificial Devil Fruits

• Soros creates an artificial Ox-Ox Fruit, Model: Giraffe, after correcting earlier prototypes that could kill users or leave them unable to transform properly 349.
• His completed ordinary Zoan prototype is described as nearly indistinguishable from a natural fruit. Soros expects artificial fruits to be unable to awaken, though he presents this as a hypothesis; Ancient Zoan production and mass production remain under development 349.
