Background / History
Rocks rose to become the dominant pirate of the New World, leading an enormous crew that drew in most major pirates of the era. His reputation as the World's Strongest Man was cemented after he defeated two Marine Admirals in battle and killed one of them; a decade later, the Marines still considered him too dangerous for Steel-Bone Kong to confront alone. 14 34
He built the Rocks Pirates by recruiting powerful pirates and allowing promising members room to develop under the crew's protection. Executives received access to looted cultivation notes and the security of the crew, enabling self-taught fighters to rapidly grow into major powers. 30 36
Rocks sought more than piracy. He demanded tribute and submission from New World kingdoms, intending to rule the New World and ultimately become King of the World. When the Vixga Kingdom and its allies resisted, he mobilized his officers to destroy it as a warning to other World Government-affiliated nations. 40 42
His conflict with the World Government escalated into repeated plundering campaigns, assaults on Marine fortresses, and the interception of Celestial Gold. During the war for the New World fortresses, Rocks revealed the Dark-Dark Fruit and personally killed Fleet Admiral Brac, shifting the battle decisively in the pirates' favor. 105 108 112
As Rocks aged, he sought a way to extend his life and prepared to challenge the Celestial Dragons directly. The promise of the Longevity Recipe, immense treasure, and hundreds of Devil Fruits brought the Rocks Pirates to God Valley. By then, however, many of his officers had outgrown their loyalty and planned to leave his crew. 87 118 119
At God Valley, Rocks fought Saint Saturn, Garp, and Saint Garling while his officers pursued treasure rather than supporting him. When Roger joined the battle, Rocks was ultimately overwhelmed, disarmed, and driven into the sea by the combined attack of Roger and Garp. 123 125
Abilities & Skills
Dark-Dark Fruit
Rocks possessed the Logia-type Dark-Dark Fruit, an ability he kept secret until the battle for the Marine fortresses. 105
- Generates dark vortexes that pull targets toward him and restrain them.
- Nullifies the Devil Fruit powers of those caught by his darkness.
- Rendered Fleet Admiral Brac's Slow-Slow Fruit ineffective, allowing Rocks to kill him. 105
- Suppressed Saint Saturn's Mythical Zoan transformation and consumed his venom attack. 121
- Does not negate opponents' innate physical power or Haki; non-Devil Fruit users remained the most suitable countermeasure against him. 106
Haki
Rocks wielded overwhelming Conqueror's and Armament Haki.
- His Armament Haki was described as stronger than Steel-Bone Kong's and powerful enough to make serious injury nearly impossible while it remained active. 107
- His Conqueror's Haki could be used to pressure and test potential recruits, including Li Yuan. 30
- Combined Conqueror's Haki, Armament Haki, swordsmanship, and darkness into his strongest attacks. 121
Swordsmanship
Rocks fought with the Shura Sword, using destructive sword techniques alongside his Haki and Devil Fruit power.
- Shura Slash — a Haki-infused sword strike capable of blasting away Garp and severely injuring Saint Saturn. 121
- Asura Killing Slash — his final all-out attack against Roger and Garp at God Valley. 125
- Could fight multiple Admiral-level opponents simultaneously; he previously held his own against three and later killed Fleet Admiral Brac while surrounded by four. 46 105
Leadership and Strategy
Rocks commanded both the visible Rocks Pirates and a hidden force of powerful subordinates capable of destroying Marine fortress G-10. 34
- Used brutal recruitment battles to identify strong survivors for his crew. 28
- Deliberately encouraged divisions among his executives to preserve his control through internal balance. 78
- Used abrupt route changes, aerial fleet transport, and intelligence advantages to evade Marine interception and strike World Government targets. 42 113
- Allowed his officers' ambitions to grow, believing their strength and loyalty would remain available when he required them. 118
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Shura Sword — Rocks' primary sword, used with Haki and Dark-Dark Fruit power. 105 121
- Rocks Pirates intelligence network — a wide-reaching network across the New World and parts of the Four Seas, formerly under Rocks' personal control. 127
Relationships
- Li Yuan — Recruited Li Yuan into the Rocks Pirates after recognizing his potential and later relied on his strategic advice during the Marine fortress war. Li Yuan ultimately abandoned Rocks at God Valley. 30 107 123
- Golden Lion Shiki — Executive and powerful subordinate who initially supported Rocks' ambition; later sought independence and refused to aid Rocks at God Valley. 40 119 124
- Whitebeard — Executive whose ideals diverged from Rocks'. Whitebeard stayed only until he could protect his found family, then abandoned Rocks during the God Valley crisis. 112 119 123
- Charlotte Linlin — Executive and part of the faction that grew powerful enough to openly seek departure from the Rocks Pirates. 40 119
- John, Ochoku, and Silver Axe — Older executives whom Rocks attempted to strengthen to balance the rise of younger officers; all chose not to save him at God Valley. 78 124
- Shakky — Intelligence officer within Rocks' organization. After Rocks' death, she seized a substantial portion of his intelligence network. 20 127
- Gol D. Roger — Pirate rival who joined Garp and the World Government's forces to kill Rocks at God Valley. 125
- Monkey D. Garp — Marine adversary repeatedly overpowered by Rocks before joining the coalition that killed him. 121 125
- Fleet Admiral Brac — Longtime Marine enemy whom Rocks defeated years earlier and later killed after nullifying Brac's Slow-Slow Fruit. 34 105
- Saint Saturn — Five Elder whom Rocks defeated and stripped of Devil Fruit power during their clash at God Valley. 121
