Ch. 521Return Journey
Chapter Summary: “Return Journey”
Key Plot Points and Events
- Cynthia is startled when Hu Yang’s Haxorus uses Teleport, a move it should not normally know. Hu Yang admits that Haxorus is unusual but decides not to rely on the move because it gives him an unfair advantage.
- Cynthia sends out her third Pokémon, Milotic, and orders it to use Ice Beam. Haxorus counters with Dragon Pulse, and the two attacks collide in a powerful explosion.
- Hu Yang instructs Haxorus to use Draco Meteor. Cynthia has Milotic defend with Mirror Coat, reflecting the meteors.
- Haxorus combines Draco Meteor with Outrage, attacking Milotic while it is occupied defending against the meteors. This forces Milotic into an impossible choice and causes it to be defeated.
- Cynthia sends out her fourth Pokémon, Garchomp, and attempts to reproduce Hu Yang’s combined Draco Meteor-and-charging attack strategy using Draco Meteor and Dragon Rush.
- Because Garchomp has not mastered the tactic, Hu Yang counters with Double Team. Guided by Hu Yang’s Aura-based vision, Haxorus avoids the falling meteors, causes Garchomp to miss, and strikes it from behind. Garchomp is then hit by one of the meteors and loses the battle.
- Cynthia recognizes that the tactic’s weakness is its difficulty and the possibility that poorly controlled meteors may hit the user. She thanks Hu Yang for showing her a new Dragon-type strategy.
- The battle ends when Hu Yang’s companions arrive aboard Porygon One. Hu Yang leaves with Haxorus, while Cynthia remains behind to study the battle and arrange repairs for the heavily damaged conference battlefield.
Character Developments
- Hu Yang demonstrates advanced tactical creativity, using Haxorus’s Draco Meteor and Outrage combination to overwhelm opponents. He also shows fairness and self-awareness by choosing not to use Haxorus’s abnormal Teleport ability again.
- Haxorus proves capable of executing complex, high-level strategies, combining powerful moves with precise movement and Double Team.
- Cynthia is defeated but remains calm, curious, and focused on learning rather than winning. She immediately analyzes Hu Yang’s tactics and experiments with adapting them for Garchomp.
- Cynthia’s attitude reveals her growth as a Champion: she values discovery and improvement over pride, and she is willing to learn from another Trainer.
- Garchomp, though extremely well trained, is shown to lack experience with the newly copied strategy, exposing the dangers of attempting an advanced tactic without sufficient practice.
Significant Themes
- Innovation in battle: Victory comes not only from raw strength but from combining moves in unexpected ways.
- Learning through defeat: Cynthia treats losing as an opportunity to discover new possibilities rather than as a failure.
- Skill versus imitation: Hu Yang’s tactic succeeds because Haxorus has mastered it, while Garchomp struggles when Cynthia tries to reproduce it immediately.
- Fairness and sportsmanship: Hu Yang avoids relying on Haxorus’s unnatural Teleport advantage, and Cynthia respectfully acknowledges his abilities.
- Experience and mastery: Powerful techniques require practice and control; even elite Pokémon can be endangered when using an unfamiliar combination.
Character Interactions
- Hu Yang and Cynthia engage in a respectful, intellectually competitive battle, with each observing and learning from the other.
- Cynthia’s curiosity leads her to imitate Hu Yang’s strategy, while Hu Yang recognizes both her intention and the flaw in Garchomp’s execution.
- After the battle, Cynthia thanks Hu Yang for revealing a new tactical possibility. Hu Yang modestly suggests that Lance may know more about Dragon-type techniques.
- Their exchange establishes mutual respect and hints at a possible future meeting or collaboration.
- Hu Yang reunites with Meowth and the others aboard Porygon One, ending the chapter as Cynthia watches them depart and takes responsibility for repairing the ruined battlefield.
