Background

Sal was a Blue Star resident who died after being struck by golden light while climbing a mountain and falling hundreds of meters. The Myriad Worlds System transported him to the One Piece world, copied Gol D. Roger’s body, and fused Roger’s remaining soul into Sal’s own. 1

The fusion gave Sal most of Roger’s memories, combat instincts, taijutsu, swordsmanship, Haki knowledge, and Conqueror’s Haki. It did not copy Roger’s mature physical power: Sal began in a body with the potential of Roger’s youth but the practical strength of an ordinary Marine sergeant. 1

Sal initially treated his resemblance to Roger as a burden. Roger’s memories, including those of Portgas D. Rouge and Ace, made clear to him that he was not the original Pirate King, even as the world increasingly accepted him as Roger. 1 49 54

Appearance

Sal possesses the youthful body and appearance of Gol D. Roger: a handsome, sunny-looking man with short black hair, black eyes, and a powerful physique that develops rapidly through the system. 1

  • Resembles Roger strongly enough to unsettle Rayleigh, Shakky, Garp, Sengoku, Kizaru, Shanks, and Roger’s former rivals. 8 10 49 54
  • Uses disguises when necessary, including the silver-haired, wrinkled, bearded Kun Emperor persona used to infiltrate Gran Tesoro. 138
  • Later wears the complete Primordial Red Dragon Set, whose form can shift between clothing styles. 116
  • Wields a black-bladed Tessaiga during the Egghead campaign. 235 236

Personality

Sal is calculating, opportunistic, and acutely aware that emotion, reputation, and altered fate are resources. He deliberately cultivates powerful allies, provokes enemies into generating experience, and uses his knowledge of future events to shape outcomes in his favor. 2 20 33

He is ruthless toward slave traders, abusive Celestial Dragons, and prisoners he judges too dangerous to release. His methods regularly put him at odds with Luffy’s more merciful ideals. 2 4 33

Despite this brutality, Sal repeatedly acts to free slaves, protect vulnerable people, and oppose the World Government’s oppression. He spared Hancock’s sisters after defeating them, protected Shirahoshi from Vander Decken, liberated the Bridge Kingdom, and ultimately declared his intention to replace the World Government with a system that protects ordinary people. 20 94 177 213

Sal is also theatrical and enjoys shaping public narratives. He allowed the world to identify him as Roger, recorded major battles, and publicly reignited pirate ambition in Loguetown by declaring that the One Piece still exists. 54 177 183

Abilities & Skills

Myriad Worlds System

The Myriad Worlds System is the source of Sal’s progression and interdimensional rewards.

  • Gains experience from positive, negative, and ordinary emotions directed toward him. 1 2
  • Gains Fate Points by significantly changing important characters’ lives and destinies. 4 8 116
  • Classifies people from D-rank to SSS-rank according to combined strength and influence. 2 92
  • Converts experience into levels, strengthening his body and Haki. 1 33
  • Uses draws to obtain artifacts, weapons, skills, and equipment from other worlds. 25 74 203
  • Allows limited travel to other worlds; Sal used Griffith’s Egg of the King to enter the God Hand’s Ascension Ceremony. 74 97

Conqueror’s Haki

Sal inherited Roger’s peak Conqueror’s Haki and later advanced it into the Ascension stage.

  • Can incapacitate large groups, including Marines, slave traders, Celestial Dragon guards, and CP0 agents. 2 10 175
  • Can focus his Haki precisely enough to disable Luke’s explosive slave collar without harming him. 4
  • Uses Conqueror’s Coating for direct combat against opponents such as Hancock, Gion, Garp, Shanks, Bullet, and Zephyr. 21 31 53 76 218
  • Observation Kill conceals Sal’s future from opponents with advanced Observation Haki. 86
  • His Ascension-stage Conqueror’s Haki naturally strengthens over time. 187
  • Reached Ascension-level mastery alongside his other Haki by the Egghead campaign. 235 236

Observation and Armament Haki

Sal’s other Haki developed from modest beginnings into Ascension-level abilities.

  • Observation Haki initially allowed him to sense Hina’s Marine ambush. 2
  • Advanced Observation Haki enabled him to evade Pacifista lasers and anticipate Vice Admiral Stainless’s attacks. 13 49
  • The Voice of All Things awakened at Level 61 and later reached peak level. 33 73
  • Advanced Armament Haki let him injure powerful Devil Fruit users and defeat Hancock’s sisters. 20 21
  • Peak Armament Haki could endure direct clashes with Conqueror’s Coating. 65
  • Both forms reached the Ascension stage by Level 109. 235

Swordsmanship

Roger’s inherited swordsmanship is Sal’s strongest original combat discipline.

  • Mountain Crusher — a Haki-infused strike used to sever a Pacifista’s hand. 13
  • Sea Severing — a decisive slash that bisected a Pacifista. 13
  • Divine DepartureRoger’s signature Conqueror’s Haki-coated sword technique; Sal used it against Garp, the God Hand, and Kizaru. 53 97 240
  • Divine Departure: Sky Wing — a variation that severely wounded Marcus Luke. 175
  • Can combine swordsmanship with advanced Observation Haki to dismantle enemy attacks before they can develop. 49

Giant Tribe Techniques

Sal instantly mastered Hakunoku and Hakai through a technique imprint.

  • Hakunoku — a long-range shockwave attack; at a temporary Level 100, it overwhelmed Blackbeard’s Air Quake. 74 82
  • Hakai — a wide-area shockwave technique that does not require Conqueror’s Haki; it gave Sal a decisive advantage over Shanks. 74 76
  • Both techniques can be enhanced with Armament or Conqueror’s Haki. 74

Heaven and Earth Manifestation

A divine transformation technique that enlarges Sal to a colossal scale.

  • Initially poorly compatible with his Haki-based power system because it requires a different form of energy. 163
  • After training, Sal reduced its stamina cost and achieved a giant form approaching 5,000 meters. 187
  • When combined with Conqueror’s Coating, it produced a strike powerful enough to collapse part of the Bridge Kingdom and create a tsunami. 177
  • Its destructive scale forces Sal to consider terrain, fault lines, and civilian risk before using it. 177

Divinity

Sal possesses exceptionally pure Divinity and has begun pursuing a path toward godhood.

  • Divine advancement proceeds through Divine Life, Demigod, and True God stages. 100
  • Igniting Divine Fire could make him a Demigod, granting extreme longevity, disease immunity, and temporary power increases through burning Divinity. 100
  • Sal has preserved his remaining Divinity rather than consume it, treating it as a rare resource for future use. 100

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Tessaiga — a fang-shaped demon sword superior to a Supreme Grade Blade. Its Wind Scar can project destructive sword-energy cyclones across roughly twenty kilometers; it later became a black blade. 203 235
  • Supreme Grade Blade AceRoger’s sword, whose stored will temporarily gave Sal access to power near Roger’s prime. Sal later gave it to Ace. 49 227
  • Chain of Heaven — divine binding chains that become more effective against divine targets. An enhancement added spatial piercing and counters to spatial abilities, though the chains remain less effective against ordinary opponents. 25 86
  • Avalon — a scabbard that accelerates recovery and can unfold The Everdistant Utopia, a barrier Rayleigh’s Conqueror’s Coating could not quickly break. 236
  • Primordial Red Dragon Set — five-piece armor that grants immense physical-strength increases, fire resistance, spell and mental resistance, Breath of Destruction, and clothing-form alteration. 116 235
  • Magic Enhancement Necklace — temporarily amplifies Sal’s physical attributes using stored magic. 12 13
  • Invisibility Cloak — conceals its wearer unless detected through advanced Observation Haki; Sal lent it to Luffy and later entrusted it to Carina during the Gran Tesoro operation. 25 141
  • Colorful Butterfly Immortal Bottle — produces daily Immortal Brew, which extends a drinker’s lifespan; its brew can also create romantic attachment to its owner. 177 181

Relationships

  • Gol D. Roger — Sal’s copied body and fused remnant soul originate from Roger; inherited memories and Haki make the world treat Sal as Roger’s return. 1 49 54
  • Silvers RayleighRoger’s former first mate and Sal’s vice captain. Rayleigh accepted him as his captain after witnessing Roger-like Haki, fought beside him at Marineford, and was rejuvenated by Sal’s longevity medicine. 49 74 132
  • Portgas D. AceRoger’s biological son; Sal became a strict father figure, helped save him at Marineford, and later gave him the blade Ace. 49 59 227
  • Portgas D. RougeRoger’s wife and Ace’s mother; later recognized publicly as Sal’s wife and encourages him to repair his relationship with Ace. 132 153

  • Nico Robin — ally, Revolutionary Army contact, and traveling companion. Robin helped Sal liberate the Bridge Kingdom and record his Loguetown declaration. 171 177 183
  • Shirahoshi — calls Sal “Brother Sal.” He introduced her to freedom beyond her room, protected her from Vander Decken, and encouraged her ambition to become a pirate. 92 94 100

  • Baccarat — former acquaintance who became a Gran Tesoro executive; she abandoned Tesoro and chose Sal during his takeover operation. 1 141
  • Stussy — captive, intelligence source, and conflicted partner. Sal exposed her as both a CP0 agent and Vegapunk’s spy, but continues using her knowledge of Egghead and the World Government. 204 206

Story Role / Major Arcs

Sabaody Archipelago

Sal entered Sabaody to exploit the beginning of the new pirate era. He built a connection with Law, hunted slave traders, freed slave convoys, and became the “slave trader hunter.” 2 4

His killing of Charlos and Roswald during the auction-house incident made him an enemy of the World Government, brought him to Rayleigh’s attention, and established his public association with Roger. 8 10

Amazon Lily and the Road to Marineford

While evading an Admiral, Sal reached Amazon Lily, exposed Hancock’s slave mark, defeated her sisters and Hancock, then helped the Boa sisters confront their past rather than fear it. 18 21 22

He used his relationship with Hancock to prepare for Ace’s rescue, lending Luffy the Invisibility Cloak and Avatar Talisman for the Impel Down operation. 25

Impel Down and Marineford

Sal recruited Jinbe, Crocodile, and Byrnndi World for the rescue, while refusing to free numerous Level Six prisoners he considered irredeemable. 33

At Marineford, Ace’s stored power briefly let Sal fight with strength near Roger’s prime. He halted Ace’s execution, publicly accepted the Roger identity, fought Garp, allied with Whitebeard, and helped secure the pirates’ retreat. 48 49 52 53 59

Building the Sal Pirates

After Marineford, Sal expanded his faction through alliances, subordinate crews, training programs, and territorial influence. Rayleigh, Shiki, Bullet, Yamato, and other powerful figures became key parts of the Sal Pirates’ growing military strength. 132 185 225

He also formed Fish-Man Island’s alliance with his forces and encouraged Shirahoshi to seek freedom beyond royal confinement. 91 92 100

Gran Tesoro, the Revolutionary Army, and Loguetown

Disguised as the Kun Emperor, Sal infiltrated Gran Tesoro to seize its wealth and break Tesoro’s debt-bondage system. He recruited Baccarat and gained Carina’s support after she learned the city’s wealth rested on the exploitation of indebted families. 138 140 141

He later joined the Revolutionary Army’s liberation of the Bridge Kingdom, crushed Marcus Luke and CP0, and used his victory to build public influence. 171 175 177

Cake Island and Egghead

Sal defeated Big Mom’s forces on Cake Island, acquired Tessaiga, captured Stussy, and began planning an assault on Egghead to deny the World Government access to the Seraphim and Mother Flame. 203 204 205

At Egghead, he defeated the Seraphim, occupied the island, badly wounded Kizaru, recruited York, and took command of the Seraphim and Pacifistas. He openly declared his goal of overthrowing the World Government and replacing it with a better global order. 236 240 241
