Background / History

Ace was imprisoned in Impel Down’s Level Six before being transferred to Marineford for public execution. During Garp’s visit, he rejected Gol D. Roger as his father and insisted that Whitebeard was the only father he recognized. 27

At Marineford, Sengoku publicly exposed Ace as the son of Roger and Portgas D. Rouge. The revelation brought renewed attention to the World Government’s past persecution of Roger’s bloodline, while Ace continued to insist that he had joined Whitebeard to help Whitebeard become Pirate King. 42

Luffy’s attempt to free Ace was initially stopped when Tsuru defeated him and broke the key to Ace’s Seastone shackles. Buggy and Mr. 3 ultimately freed Ace with a wax key, allowing Ace to escape the execution platform and reunite with Luffy. 56

After escaping, Ace immediately protected the wounded Marco from Kizaru and later confronted Akainu to defend Luffy. Akainu’s magma overwhelmed Ace’s flames, badly burning his hands and leaving him vulnerable until Sal intervened. 57 64 65

Whitebeard’s death left Ace devastated. When Ace attempted to return across Marineford’s fissure to aid him, Sal physically restrained him, arguing that doing so would make Whitebeard’s sacrifice meaningless. 58 59

Following the war, Ace used a resurrection artifact to bring Rouge back. The resurrection left him with a recurring side effect: when he fights at full strength, his body temporarily becomes female for about an hour. 112

When the resurrection side effect activates, he becomes a tall woman with long black hair, freckles, and flames covering her body. His hair can transform into fire, while his clothing stretches to fit his altered body. 112
