Background / History

Kaido once served under Rocks and was unable to defeat Golden Lion Shiki during that era. In his youth, he was effortlessly pinned to the ground by Gol D. Roger, an experience he remains determined to avenge. He later rescued King from a laboratory, forming the bond that made King his most trusted companion. 70 113 133

After killing Kozuki Oden, Kaido installed Kurozumi Orochi as Wano’s Shogun and used the country for weapons production. Industrial pollution, famine, disease, and widespread death followed under their rule. 122 135

Appearance

Kaido is an enormous, heavily muscled Oni said to stand seven meters tall in human form. He has long black hair, sharp fangs, and two prominent horns.

Personality

Kaido is battle-hungry, prideful, and contemptuous of weakness. He believes survival belongs to the strong and repeatedly seeks clashes with powerful opponents, including Roger, Shiki, and Sal. 70 118

Despite his brutal image, he is calculating when necessary. While imprisoned by Sal, Kaido quickly understood that Sal intended to negotiate rather than execute him, and he accepted humiliating terms to preserve the Beast Pirates. 122 123

His treatment of Yamato is violent and controlling: he wants her strong enough to inherit Wano, but expresses his pride and concern through brutal training and intimidation. 207 He also places exceptional trust in King, calling him his closest companion. 133

Abilities & Skills

Azure Dragon Transformation

Kaido can transform into a gigantic Azure Dragon or a humanoid hybrid form. His dragon body grants flight, overwhelming scale, and devastating ranged attacks.

While watching the Marineford broadcast, Kaido recognizes Sal’s advanced Conqueror’s Haki as resembling Roger’s. His recent stalemate with Shanks and Shanks’s apparent Haki growth leave him frustrated and reflective. 49

Expansion into Whitebeard Territory

Following Whitebeard’s death, Kaido orders the Beast Pirates to seize islands on the edge of Whitebeard’s former territory. He avoids pushing too deeply while waiting to see how Big Mom and Sal respond. 70

Assault on Black Spear Elephant Fish Island

Kaido personally leads an assault against Sal’s territory, arriving ahead of his fleet in Azure Dragon form. He overwhelms Ace, ignores the defenders’ resistance, and declares his intention to seize Black Spear Elephant Fish Island. 111 112

Ace’s Flame Emperor burns him, but Kaido regenerates almost immediately. He then brutalizes the defending pirates until Shiki intervenes. 113 114

Battle Against Sal and Shiki

Kaido defeats or incapacitates multiple defenders, including Jozu and Blenheim, before Sal arrives. Sal physically humiliates him, then gains the upper hand through stronger Conqueror’s Haki, the Chain of Heaven, Hakai, and battlefield tactics. 115 118

When Shiki returns to the fight, Sal uses Observation Kill to bypass Kaido’s future sight and lands a devastating Divine Departure. Sal and Shiki eventually subdue Kaido and take him prisoner. 121

Captivity and Ransom

Bound in Seastone chains, Kaido refuses Sal’s initial terms—particularly the demand for Yamato—but eventually accepts a harsher settlement to save the Beast Pirates. He must pay 12 billion Beli, return stolen people and property, surrender Beck Island and Luan Island, and maintain peace with Sal’s forces for one and a half years. 122 123

The agreement also costs Kaido key subordinates: Ulti, Page One, and Black Maria ultimately join Sal’s crew. 128 129 131 Kaido is released to King after the compensation is delivered, but leaves promising to repay Sal’s humiliation. 133

Return to Wano and Alliance with Big Mom

Back in Wano, Kaido remains furious over the loss of his subordinates but cannot justify another war against Sal without support. He later forms an alliance with Big Mom to counter Sal’s growing influence. 135 208

Continued Dealings with Sal

After Sal’s forces seize Doflamingo’s operations, Kaido protests the loss of his arms and Artificial Devil Fruit supply. Sal offers to continue the business directly, and Kaido accepts the arrangement rather than escalate the conflict. 232
