Background

Rayleigh served as Gol D. Roger’s first mate and right-hand man during the Roger Pirates’ voyage. He was present through Roger’s final years, including the period when Roger suffered from an incurable illness, voluntarily surrendered to the World Government, and began the Great Pirate Era through his execution. 11

At some point after the Roger Pirates disbanded, Rayleigh survived a shipwreck and was rescued by Hachi. Their friendship endured into the present era. 11

Before the events at Sabaody, Rayleigh lived quietly around the archipelago under the name “Coating Rayleigh.” He worked as a ship coater, gambled at casinos, and even attempted to auction himself off before escaping or robbing prospective buyers. 8 9

His first encounter with Augustus D. Sal unsettles him immediately. Sal’s face, voice, mannerisms, knowledge of Rayleigh’s past, and Conqueror’s Haki all strongly resemble Roger’s; Rayleigh gradually comes to believe that Sal is more than a mere clone. 8 10 45

Personality
