Background / History
Childhood and family
At age ten, Aomei was nearly assaulted by the man she believed to be her father. She kept the incident secret because she feared that exposing him would leave her and Pietro unable to survive on their own. A Stark missile later killed both the man and her mother, leaving Aomei grateful that it saved her from him but resentful that it also took her mother. 173
Kino later revealed that the couple who raised Aomei and Pietro were their adoptive parents. Their biological father was Magneto, while their biological mother abandoned the twins after giving birth. 178
Life in Sokovia
By age twenty-one, Aomei and Pietro lived in poverty in a cramped apartment while she worked at a pizza shop. Despite their circumstances, she kept her own room clean and orderly and resisted Pietro’s attempts to control her personal life. 172 173
Her childhood trauma left her wary of men, but she still wanted the freedom to form ordinary relationships rather than let Pietro drive away every man who showed interest in her. 173
Appearance
Aomei initially wears a pizza-shop uniform with a white shirt, small red necktie, and red beret. 172
After embracing her identity as the Witch, she adopts a crimson-and-black outfit resembling her future Scarlet Witch appearance. 179
- Deep crimson leather trench coat. 179 286
- Black leather pants and boots. 179 286
- Red magical energy that radiates from her hands and spreads in destructive waves. 250 286
Personality
Aomei is proud, direct, and fiercely protective of her independence. She resents being treated as Kino’s possession, challenges his possessive rhetoric, and establishes explicit rules against him entering her room, spying on her, or reading her mind. 177 212
She is compassionate even when it conflicts with her own interests. The suffering of Kino’s experimental subjects gives her recurring nightmares, and she refuses Chaos Magic unless Kino promises not to kill the prisoner used to create it. 212 249
Her moral convictions also shape her heroism. Aomei joins the Avengers because she wants to use her power openly to help vulnerable people, and she shares Captain America’s belief that individuals should not be abandoned for the sake of expediency. 291 333
Aomei remains sternly protective of Pietro despite their frequent arguments. She punishes him for harassing flight attendants, defends him when Kino speaks harshly of him, and worries about what he might do if given power without responsibility. 180 181 250
Abilities & Skills
Chaos Magic
Aomei wields crimson Chaos Magic, an offensively focused power with few of the environmental restrictions associated with Lorna’s magnetism. 250
- Can create red magical waves powerful enough to disintegrate Hydra soldiers and pulverize a vehicle. 286
- Can fly by propelling herself with magical force. 286
- Can destroy, deflect, or erase incoming projectiles. 250
- Can seize and redirect enormous metal constructs during battlefield combat. 449
- Her magic is associated with the Darkness attribute rather than fire. 396
Mental Magic and Dream Resistance
Chaos Magic provides substantial mental enhancement, allowing Aomei to resist Nightmare’s attempts to overwhelm her consciousness. 388
- Retained clear memories of Nightmare’s Dream Dimension after awakening. 390
- Can enter the Dream Dimension in her physical body and use her full Chaos Magic there. 390
- Her childhood fear manifested in the Dream Dimension as a vulnerable “little Aomei,” while an empowered “big Aomei” protected that aspect of her psyche. Neither personality remained independently active after her return. 390
Illusion Perception
After Athena’s ritual, Aomei gained the ability to see through illusions and perceive Athena’s otherwise hidden horn. 187
Combat Training
Kino trains Aomei in the Mirror Dimension under conditions meant to replicate sudden lethal attacks. 250
- Must react without warning rather than waiting for an opponent to prepare. 250
- Uses aggressive magical attacks as a defensive method against incoming threats. 250
- Her later Hydra rescue demonstrates that the training improved both her control and confidence. 286
Relationships
- Kino / Chino Marcus — Romantic partner, mentor, and the person who arranged for her Chaos Magic. Their relationship is intimate but contentious: Aomei repeatedly challenges his possessiveness, cruelty, and invasions of her privacy. 174 177 212 249
- Pietro / Quicksilver — Twin brother. They argue constantly over autonomy, romance, and responsibility, but Aomei remains fiercely protective of him and acts as his disciplinarian. 173 181 250
- Lorna Dane / Polaris — Paternal half-sister. Their first meeting is tense, and their relationship initially carries resentment and rivalry. 181 195
- Magneto — Biological father. Aomei learns that he abandoned her and Pietro before they were raised by adoptive parents; unlike Lorna, she did not inherit his mutant gene. 178 180
- Captain America and the Avengers — Aomei joins the rebuilt Avengers to pursue public-facing heroism and continue her training. 291 333
- Athena — Sacred unicorn whose selective approval grants Aomei illusion-piercing sight. 187
Story Role / Major Arcs
Kino’s courtship in Sokovia
Kino locates Aomei while she is working at a pizza shop and courts her indirectly through extravagant tips. Aomei eventually confronts him directly about his intentions rather than accepting his money as silent charity. 172 174
When hired thugs attack Pietro, Aomei joins the defense by injuring one attacker with a thrown cup. Kino then intervenes, kills the assailants, erases the witnesses’ memories, and heals Pietro’s injuries with Phoenix Flame. 174 175
Learning the truth of her parentage
Kino reveals Magneto as Aomei and Pietro’s biological father and explains that their birth mother abandoned them. The revelation devastates Aomei, but Kino’s promise to remain with her becomes a major turning point in their emotional bond. 178
Birth of the Witch
To protect Aomei from the unpredictable effects of Loki’s Scepter, Kino tests potential powers on criminals rather than exposing her directly to the Mind Stone. Aomei is horrified by the cruelty of the experiments and suffers nightmares from witnessing their results. 212
When Kino finally produces Chaos Magic, Aomei refuses to let him kill the female prisoner who survived the process. She forces him to promise the woman’s safety, choosing her conscience over immediate possession of the power. 248 249
Avengers service
Aomei proves herself against Hydra by rescuing Captain America, Peggy Carter, and Falcon from an ambush. She later chooses to join the Avengers because she wants her abilities to help people publicly rather than remain limited to Kino’s private operations. 286 291
Her commitment to the Avengers creates friction with Kino and Pietro. Pietro dislikes the team’s discipline, while Aomei remains because she believes in Captain America’s ideals and wants further training. 333
Nightmare incident
Nightmare targets Aomei’s buried childhood trauma, forcing her to confront the fear that has followed her since age ten. Her Chaos Magic allows her to retain awareness of the Dream Dimension, and overcoming the manifested fear weakens Nightmare’s hold on her. 387 390
Life beyond Marvel Earth
After traveling with Kino to the One Piece world, Aomei and the other companions from Marvel Earth adapt to its magical structure. Because her magic originates from the Book of Kino, she adjusts more quickly than many outsiders. 518
