First Appearance Chapter 255

Background and history

Jack first appears en route to Dressrosa to escort a shipment of roughly sixteen Artificial Devil Fruits from Doflamingo, also known as Joker 255. At Dressrosa’s Underground Trade Harbor, he also purchases weapons. Sensing Werther nearby, he abandons the transaction to confront him despite Doflamingo’s objections 259.

Werther draws Jack to Green Bit to keep their fight away from Dressrosa 259. Jack’s mammoth form, Armament Haki and rapid healing withstand repeated attacks, but Werther eventually overwhelms him with Crimson Regalia and drains his Life Force with Intent Blood 260 263 265 266. Jack accepts defeat and asks what move beat him. Werther names it, keeps his promise to spare Jack, and lets Sheepshead carry him away 267.

Jack later represents Kaido in an alliance with Werther. He joins Werther and Doflamingo in the fight against Aokiji, then delivers to Kaido the coordinates Werther deciphered from a Road Poneglyph 381 382 389. During the Gold War, Werther again saves Jack after finding him gravely wounded and gives him medicine to stabilize him 446 473. Jack subsequently joins the Beasts Pirates’ invasion of Wano, where his mammoth charge cracks the country’s gate 570 572. After Werther and Kaido become enemies, Jack defends Kaido’s base and dies fighting Number Three 725 792 795.

Appearance

Jack is a towering, heavily built man whose size and metal jawpiece give him an intimidating appearance 255 259.

  • Two thick yellow braids hang over his chest; in mammoth form, his yellow hair remains visible as a small tuft or ponytail 259 260 572.
  • He wears a metal jawpiece over his mouth and has two prominent tusks 255 259.
  • His ship has an elephant-shaped bow 255.

Personality

Jack is impatient, domineering and quick to challenge others. He threatens Doflamingo during a trade and ignores Sheepshead’s suggestion to scout Green Bit before following Werther there 255 259. He is more watchful in combat than his behavior suggests, however: he resists Werther’s attempts to provoke a reckless charge and keeps the faster swordsman in view 261.

Jack takes pride in his strength and continues trying to fight even when badly injured 266 473. He accepts a fair defeat without pleading or threatening revenge, asking instead how Werther beat him 267. He also objects when Werther proposes an invasion plan that would sacrifice the Beasts Pirates’ core fighters, though he accepts it after being offered Artificial Devil Fruits 580.

Abilities and skills

Ancient Zoan transformation

Jack can transform into a massive mammoth or a human-beast form 260 263.

  • Mammoth form: His charges shake the ground and devastate everything in their path; one impact cracks Wano’s reinforced gate 260 382 572.
  • Human-beast form: He gives up some raw strength for greater speed and balance, calling it his strongest form 263.
  • Recovery: Deep wounds heal rapidly, but the process consumes Life Force 263 264.

Haki

  • Armament Haki: Jack coats his body, tusks and hook-scythe blades with it. He can defend with his tusks even though they are produced by his Devil Fruit transformation 260 261 263.
  • Observation Haki: He tracks Werther when the swordsman moves faster than Jack’s eyes can follow, though sensing an attack does not always let him react in time 261 265.

Physical resilience and combat techniques

  • Jack survives a sword wound that exposes his beating heart, extensive slashes, and an attack that crushes and burns his chest 262 263 264.
  • Elephant Roar is a powerful bellow he developed by imitating a mammoth. It disorients Werther and affects spectators farther away 264.
  • Fang Blade Whirlwind uses his two hook scythes in a spinning attack; a glancing strike tears flesh from Werther’s chest 266.
  • His Fish-Man physiology lets him breathe underwater, though sinking into the sea remains dangerous to him as a Devil Fruit user 264 615.

Weapons and items

  • Paired hook scythes — Curved blades concealed within the tusks at his neck. Jack draws them in human-beast form and reinforces them with Armament Haki 263.
  • Metal jawpiece — Removable covering worn over his mouth 255.

Relationships

  • Kaido — Jack serves as one of his All-Stars and carries out missions for the Beasts Pirates 255 305 381.
  • Tillman — A senior Beasts Pirates adviser who praises Jack’s service and checks on his injuries 422 473.
  • Sheepshead — A trusted subordinate whose life Jack once saved; Sheepshead risks approaching Werther to retrieve him after the Green Bit fight 267 551.
  • Ginrummy — A subordinate who reminds the crew of Jack’s recovery ability and signals Sheepshead to prepare an escape during his fight with Werther 263.
  • Werther — Initially defeats and spares Jack. They later fight together, and Werther saves him from serious injuries on multiple occasions, though Jack resents being mocked by him 267 381 385 446 473.

Trivia

  • “Drought” refers to the destruction Jack leaves by smashing and trampling his surroundings, not an ability to dry out land 382.
