Background / History

Ferdinand and his younger sister Catarina were exiled from Mary Geoise as children. Though no longer living as Celestial Dragons, their former status continues to grant them unusual access and trust within the World Government. Ferdinand later became Tutu Island’s manager, building an auction business and an underworld trade network. 27

Following Werther’s killing of Gat, Ferdinand arranged the dockside siege against him to satisfy Gat’s associates. He later contacted Werther to apologize, offer compensation, and recruit him against Garde, Gat’s powerful and unstable adopted brother. 26

Ferdinand, Werther, and Catarina formed a cautious alliance: Werther would provide combat support, while Ferdinand would supply rare resources, purchasing channels, and classified intelligence. Ferdinand also replaced the Furious Lion Pirates in his underworld operations by arranging an exclusive partnership with Donquixote Doflamingo. 26 27

Ferdinand devised the ambush that lured Garde into his castle’s underground passage. After Werther and Catarina killed Garde, Ferdinand explained that he valued Werther as a strong, independent long-term partner who sought one-time payments rather than control over his profits. 28 29

Two years later, Ferdinand helped Werther obtain rare metals and locate the Iron Tribe, a secretive family of master weapon-smiths. His ties to the family were personal as well as commercial: he was romantically involved with Iron Six Hundred, also called Liu. 40 43 44

Ferdinand’s partnership with Werther grew beyond the sword-forging arrangement. Werther offered him access to an island’s Seastone deposits in repayment for his help, and Doflamingo later proposed an alliance combining Ferdinand’s intelligence, his own influence, and Werther’s strength. Ferdinand was also being considered as the Five Elders’ regional representative. 64 70

Ferdinand and Six became husband and wife and jointly administered Tutu Island with Catarina. Ferdinand handled diplomacy, Six managed finances, and Catarina oversaw CP9. When Six became pregnant, Ferdinand sought her grandfather Tie Yi’s approval of their marriage; despite rebuking Ferdinand for eloping with Six, Tie Yi accepted it. They later had a son. 100 214 678

Ferdinand regularly transported weapons from Dressrosa to the first half of the Grand Line for resale. During one such journey, he contacted Doflamingo with a story that a rogue wave had wrecked his ship and left him and Catarina stranded among dangerous beasts. Werther hurried to rescue them, but noticed inconsistencies in their behavior and Catarina’s month-old leg injury. Ferdinand admitted that Blackbeard had used the siblings to lure Werther into a prepared trap. 675 676 677 678

Ferdinand explained that he had betrayed Werther to protect Six and their newborn son. Werther, who had considered him a friend, shot him in the forehead with a Seastone bullet. Before dying, Ferdinand asked Werther to spare Six and warned him that the way out lay to the south. Werther later saw Ferdinand’s body on the island as it sank and left it to the sea. 678 687

Appearance

Ferdinand is a bearded young man with an unusually mature appearance; despite looking older, he states that he is twenty-four years old. 43

His demeanor changes quickly when the balance of power shifts. He initially challenged Werther over the Den Den Mushi, but immediately resumed polite negotiations after learning that Werther had killed Vice Admiral Onigumo. 39

Despite his opportunism, Ferdinand is deeply protective of Catarina and genuinely devoted to Iron Six Hundred. Werther’s threat to sell Catarina into slavery caused him to offer everything he owned, while his concern for Six’s safety made him desperately try to prevent Werther from harming the Iron Tribe. 39 43 45

Fatherhood became another overriding loyalty. Ferdinand said he would give anything for his son, including his life; under Blackbeard’s coercion, he even brought Catarina into the trap set for Werther. Although he admitted the betrayal, he was genuinely pleased to learn that Werther had regarded him as a friend and tried to warn him before dying. 678
