Ch. 721Simplicity
Plot points and events
- Werther wakes in an ice cave after an unusually long, two-week period of unconsciousness. He feels restored and far stronger, but discovers he has spent all five million stored Life Force.
- His former Speed and Physical Strength abilities have merged into Constitution (23), which appears to reflect his overall physical capabilities. He also simplifies his ability panel: his key abilities include Thunder Core (11), Swordsmanship (20), Armament Haki (20), Observation Haki (19), Conqueror’s Haki (8), and Hand-to-Hand Combat (9).
- Werther assesses his strength and believes he would fare better against Red-Haired than before, though he remains wary of Magellan’s poison in Impel Down’s confined setting.
- Doffy reports that Diamante was killed by Sabo, who had gone to Fish-Man Island to help Luffy. The Straw Hat Pirates have escaped and reached Punk Hazard; Doffy has sent Vergo to confront them with Caesar’s help.
- Werther offers to avenge Diamante, but Doffy declines, accepting that the Straw Hats were likely to become enemies. Werther heads back to Dressrosa.
- Suspecting Fish-Man Island failed to support Diamante as promised, Werther postpones dealing with it until after the coming battle, warning that it will pay if he wins.
Character developments and interactions
- Werther emerges physically transformed, more confident in his speed and strength, and more pragmatic about the risks of fighting powerful opponents. He also shows loyalty to Diamante and suspicion toward Fish-Man Island.
- Doffy is shaken by Diamante’s death but remains focused on the conflict with the Straw Hats. He refuses Werther’s offer to pursue Sabo personally.
- Diamante is remembered as fearless; Werther had armed him with Dyna Stones so he could die fighting if defeated.
- Sabo is revealed as Diamante’s killer and as someone who intervened on Luffy’s behalf at Fish-Man Island. Vergo and Caesar are positioned as threats to the Straw Hats at Punk Hazard.
Significant themes
- Strength and survival: Werther judges power through combat and recognizes that circumstances—such as Magellan’s home territory—can matter as much as raw ability.
- Loyalty and vengeance: Werther feels responsible for sending Diamante and offers to avenge him, while Doffy mourns but prioritizes the larger conflict.
- Distrust and consequences: Werther interprets Fish-Man Island’s apparent failure to help as betrayal and plans retaliation, though immediate danger takes priority.
- Transformation through sacrifice: Werther’s immense physical improvement comes at the cost of exhausting all his stored Life Force.
