Background / History

Wuli obtains Shangyang instead of the dragon he hoped for when his second choice among three reward eggs proves to be a mystery egg. The fledgling eats its shell and, soon afterward, asks Wuli to release it from the system’s pet space 45 46.

Shangyang initially serves as a lookout and companion. When Wuli and Jewelry Bonney are stranded and injured, it catches more than a hundred fish a day to feed them. Its later fights with Caribou and Absalom establish that it can protect Wuli as well as scout for him 81 167 183.

Appearance

Shangyang is an unusually beautiful, one-legged bird with glossy feathers. By the time it joins Wuli and Bonney on the deserted island, it is about the size of a seagull 46 80.

  • Its feathers glitter in sunlight 80.
  • Despite its relatively small size, its growing weight reaches several hundred pounds and cracks a warship’s deck beneath Wuli 157 158.
  • It can temporarily enlarge enough to carry Wuli in flight 194 196.

Personality

Shangyang takes pride in being a divine beast and objects strongly to being called an ordinary—or “stupid”—bird. It is boastful, sharp-tongued, fond of teasing Wuli, and prone to dramatic displays when it wants to avoid work. It also dislikes confinement in the pet space and can be persuaded to cooperate with threats involving food or a return there 46 94 150 183.

Its loyalty becomes clearest when Wuli is in danger. Shangyang guards him during his Sword Dao Seed awakening, worries about him during the fight with Moria, and furiously demands the return of his stolen shadow 87 188 203.

Abilities & Skills

Telepathy and perception

  • Communicates through thoughts with Wuli; their link can also reveal Shangyang’s private reactions to him 46 80 90.
  • Detects approaching wind and rain, and spots ships through mist that Wuli initially misses 46 52.
  • Senses danger to Wuli through their bond without always knowing its source 202.

Flight, speed, and size change

  • Scouts from above and moves fast enough to appear as a streak of light 94 167.
  • Can grow large enough to carry Wuli, but the transformation has a time limit it cannot yet judge reliably. It shrinks during one pursuit, dropping them both into the sea 194 196.

Wind and rain

  • A wingbeat can generate a powerful gust; Shangyang scatters a Marine squad with wind and sand 95.
  • Its rain outlines the otherwise invisible Absalom, removing his advantage 183.
  • Rain-Calling Dance produces an unusual downpour that weakens Moria’s bats and steadily drains Buggy’s strength 203 209.

Shangyang Dance and bloodline power

  • Shangyang Dance is a rapid aerial series of pecking strikes. It badly wounds Caribou and later pressures Buggy 167 208.
  • Shangyang has not awakened Haki during its fight with Caribou; the attacks’ speed, force, and divine-beast bloodline still let them hurt him 167.
  • Its bloodline pressure kills ordinary bats it strikes and brings down others nearby. Moria’s shadow-made bats do not share that vulnerability 188.

Relationships

  • Wuli — Its Sword Master and closest companion. They bicker over orders, nicknames, and food, but Shangyang repeatedly protects him 94 183 203.
  • Jewelry Bonney — A source of both fear and food rivalry: Shangyang fishes for her while they are stranded, later competing with her over meals 81 179.
  • Absalom — His invisibility fails against Shangyang’s rain; he retreats rather than face its approaching strike 183.
  • Gecko Moria — Tries to claim Shangyang as a pet and later steals Wuli’s shadow, provoking Shangyang’s attack 187 203.
  • Buggy — Fights Shangyang on Kareibari Island and is weakened by its rain 208 209.
  • Yasopp — Shoots Shangyang as it closes in on Buggy, leaving the bird unconscious 210.
