Background / History

Zephyr belonged to the same generation as Garp and Sengoku. He attended the Marine academy alongside Garp, Sengoku, and Tsuru, sharing years of training and combat with them before rising through the Marines. Despite fighting countless pirates, he became known for never killing an enemy 10 147.

The murder of his family left him grieving and increasingly isolated. A later massacre of his students cost him an arm and inflicted another devastating loss. Garp remembered that Zephyr continued showing mercy toward pirates despite criticism from others 147.

After leaving the Marines, Zephyr became commander-in-chief of the NEO Marines. His eventual crusade against pirates reversed his earlier restraint: he came to accept mass destruction as a means of eradicating piracy and condemned the Marines for sheltering criminals while claiming to uphold justice 10 125 128 131.

Appearance

Zephyr is a powerfully built older man with short purple hair. At his debut, he wears black light armor and carries the enormous mechanical arm known as Crusher 10 146.

  • Purple hair — a prominent identifying feature both at his introduction and after the Endpoint Island battle 10 146.
  • Crusher — a massive iron arm that dominates his combat silhouette 10.
  • Sunglasses — worn during his reunion with Kuzan on the frozen Third Endpoint Island 146.
  • Lost arm — sustained during the massacre of his students, as recounted by Garp 147.

Personality

Zephyr combines personal honor with stubborn loyalty. When Shuzo attacks Wuli, he apologizes on his subordinate’s behalf, yet refuses to surrender Morgan even after learning the truth about him. Because Morgan sought his protection, Zephyr feels obligated to defend him and falls back on his habit of settling disagreements through combat 10.

His instructor’s instincts remain strong. He turns his duel with Wuli into a teaching opportunity, praises the younger generation, and later recognizes Wuli’s considerable growth. He also warns his allies not to underestimate Kizaru, showing that his anger does not erase his ability to judge an opponent 11 114 126.

Hatred makes Zephyr willing to endanger innocent people, but concern for his students repeatedly disrupts his resolve. Their sacrifices force him to question whether achieving his goal would leave him alone again. Ultimately, he chooses to help the endangered younger fighters rather than simply seize an unguarded opportunity to reach the Dyna Stones 124 125 134.

Abilities & Skills

Armament Haki

  • Coats Crusher in black Armament Haki to strengthen its attacks 107.
  • Uses the Haki-covered weapon in direct clashes with Kizaru’s light-powered kicks 107.
  • Haki alone does not guarantee a hit: Kizaru avoids a later strike by transforming into light before Crusher reaches him 111.

Crusher Combat

  • Delivers heavy blows whose impacts collapse ground, scatter debris, and produce destructive shockwaves 11 107 128.
  • Crush Burst — releases a powerful surge of energy from Crusher; Kizaru counters it with his light sword, Ama no Murakumo 107.
  • Crusher Short Strike — clamps Crusher around Kizaru’s leg and detonates the explosives inside it. The blast damages Kizaru, although his Devil Fruit allows him to reconstruct his body 110 111.
  • Limitation: Crusher’s cumbersome movement makes clean hits difficult against Kizaru’s speed 129.

Combat Instruction

  • Trained many officers who became the backbone of the Marines, including Hina, Smoker, and the three admirals of his former era 10 101.
  • Uses controlled sparring to teach through practical experience rather than merely defeat an opponent 11.
  • Helps Wuli develop a better understanding of combat during his stay at the NEO Marines’ dojo. Wuli later credits this instruction with helping him survive his encounter with Shiryu 11 101.

Endurance and Physical Limits

  • Defeats Wuli after dozens of exchanges, but the instructive battle leaves him breathless and requires recovery pills 11.
  • Continues fighting Kizaru despite bleeding heavily, repeated knockdowns, and severe exhaustion 109 129.
  • Uses medicine to restore enough strength to resume combat, though its effectiveness diminishes as his injuries worsen 109 110 129.
  • His age and declining strength leave him substantially outmatched by Kizaru during the Endpoint Island conflict 108 129.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Crusher — enormous mechanical iron arm used for striking, gripping, and explosive attacks. It suffers major damage during Kizaru’s early assault 10 108 110.
  • Recovery medicine — pills and bottled medicine used to recover stamina and temporarily sustain his fighting strength 11 109 114.
  • Nautical charts — an old chart supplied by Hina and a current chart obtained by Smoker. CP0 identifies the old chart’s three surveyed endpoints as a clue to Zephyr’s objective 11 12.
  • Dyna Stones — stolen from Period Island and used to destroy Endpoint Islands. Their protective casings can be broken to trigger a violent reaction and explosion 78 135.

Relationships

  • Wuli — student and grateful beneficiary of his dojo instruction. Wuli opposes the Endpoint Island plan while repeatedly risking his life to save Zephyr; Zephyr later acknowledges being taught a lesson by a youngster 11 101 125 131 146.
  • Ain — devoted student and subordinate who shields him from Kizaru despite orders to escape. Zephyr pulls her out of danger and takes the incoming attack himself 129 130.
  • Bins — loyal subordinate who stays behind to delay Kizaru so Zephyr can reach the Dyna Stones. His willingness to die contributes to Zephyr’s doubts about the mission 123 124.
  • Shuzo — subordinate who immediately obeys Zephyr’s command to stand down. Zephyr accepts responsibility for his attack on Wuli 10.
  • Hina — former student who supplies an old nautical chart. She later feels guilt over her part in enabling his destructive plan 11 83.
  • Smoker — former student who respects him as an instructor and obtains the current nautical chart he requested 10 11 12.
  • Kizaru / Borsalino — former student with whom Zephyr has a long-strained relationship. Their battles combine personal hostility, disagreement over their chosen paths, and Zephyr’s criticism of Kizaru’s reliance on his Devil Fruit 107 109 128.
  • Kuzan — former student who reunites with him after the conflict and later brings news that Wuli is safe 146 155.
  • Garp — longtime academy companion and friend. Zephyr feels indebted to him for publicly denying Wuli’s involvement in the conflict, thereby helping protect Wuli from suspicion 147 155.
  • Morgan — fugitive accepted into the NEO Marines after Zephyr initially believes he has been unjustly persecuted. Zephyr continues protecting him even after learning the circumstances of his flight 10.
  • Monkey D. Luffy — pirate opponent whose duel with Zephyr is interrupted when Wuli takes Luffy’s straw hat and draws him away 103 104.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Morgan Dispute and Dojo Training

Zephyr arrives during the confrontation over Morgan, stops Shuzo, and challenges Wuli rather than hand over someone under his protection. He wins their duel but deliberately makes it instructive. Afterward, he arranges for Morgan’s removal and the repair of damaged buildings, then hosts Wuli and the others at the NEO Marines’ temporary dojo 10 11.

During this stay, Zephyr collects the two nautical charts from Hina and Smoker. CP0 subsequently traces their significance and concludes that he is searching for the Dyna Stone, bringing his preparations to the World Government’s attention 11 12.

Destruction of the Endpoint Islands

Zephyr’s forces raid Period Island and steal the Dyna Stone. He destroys the first Endpoint Island despite Kizaru’s intervention, prompting Sakazuki to mobilize Marine Headquarters’ main forces and prioritize protecting the remaining two islands 78.

The second Endpoint Island is also destroyed before Kizaru can stop him. News of the campaign draws Wuli into pursuit: he wants to repay Zephyr’s guidance and save his life, not endorse the plan or fight on behalf of its objectives 82 83 84.

Confrontation at the Third Endpoint

When Wuli reveals himself, Zephyr warns that aiding the Neo Navy could carry consequences too severe for a Marine to bear. Wuli nevertheless stays, while openly rejecting the sacrifice of innocent civilians 101.

Wuli interrupts Zephyr’s fight with Luffy to prevent both men from becoming vulnerable to the surrounding Marines. Zephyr refuses to retreat and subsequently battles Kizaru, suffering severe injuries but continuing with the aid of medicine 104 107 108 109.

As his followers fall defending him, Zephyr begins questioning whether destroying the final island would be worth losing everyone still close to him. Confronted beside the Dyna Stones, he admits uncertainty about the cost but insists that he cannot abandon the opportunity his followers bought with their blood 123 124 125.

Choosing to Protect the Younger Fighters

Kizaru intercepts Zephyr before he can activate the Dyna Stone timer. During their renewed battle, Ain tries to shield her teacher; Zephyr saves her from an otherwise fatal attack, and Wuli intervenes to protect him 128 129 130 131.

When Wuli, Luffy, and Zoro are overwhelmed, Zephyr orders Ain to help them rather than exploit the opening solely for his original mission. He then breaks several Dyna Stone casings, triggering explosions that divert Kizaru and give the three fighters an opportunity for a coordinated counterattack 134 135.

Survival and Aftermath

Zephyr survives and shares a drink with Kuzan on the frozen Third Endpoint Island. He reflects that, after spending most of his life teaching others, he has received a lesson from someone younger. Wuli’s task to stop the island’s destruction is completed, but Wuli recognizes that Zephyr must decide his own future 146 147 148.

Later, on an island in the New World, Kuzan reassures him that Wuli is safe. Zephyr understands that Garp’s account of Wuli’s absence from the campaign helps conceal his involvement, expresses gratitude toward his old friend, and passes the news to Ain 155.
