| Alias(es) | “Straw Hat” Luffy |
| Gender | Male |
| Affiliation | Straw Hat Pirates |
| Occupation/Role | Pirate; captain of the Straw Hat Pirates |
| First Appearance | Chapter 29 (on-page appearance) |
Appearance
Luffy is a young man with messy short black hair, a scar beneath his left eye, and a straw hat hanging around his neck 29.
- Wears a small red vest, blue knee-length denim shorts, and straw sandals 29.
- His body is rubber-like due to the Gum-Gum Fruit, allowing it to stretch, inflate, and rebound attacks 29 31.
- Usually wears his straw hat when serious; he puts it on before confronting Wuli about his knowledge of his past 33.
- His body reddens and gives off steam when he enters Gear Second 105 119.
Personality
Luffy is fearless, impulsive, and unusually relaxed in danger. When a Marine warship approaches the Thousand Sunny, he grins rather than panics; after boarding the enemy ship, his main concern is returning to Sanji’s cooking 29 31.
He frequently acts on sudden ideas without considering the consequences, such as retracting his stretched arm while Zoro is using it as a bridge, launching both of them onto the Marine warship 30. Despite this carefree behavior, he becomes serious when Wuli reveals private information about his childhood, Shanks, and Rayleigh 32 34.
Luffy treasures the straw hat Shanks entrusted to him. He abandons a confrontation with Zephyr to chase Wuli after Wuli takes it, then checks it for damage when it is returned 104 105. He also insists that his crew honor an agreement with Ain, even though Zoro still wants to confront Wuli 108. His grief over Ace’s death strengthens his resolve never again to let someone take away the people he loves 112 119.
Abilities & Skills
Gum-Gum Fruit
Luffy’s Devil Fruit grants his body rubber-like properties.
- Uses Gum-Gum Balloon to inflate his body, absorb incoming cannonballs, and rebound them toward the Marine warship 30.
- His body renders ordinary gunfire ineffective; bullets either fail to penetrate or rebound at the Marines 31.
- Stretches his arm across the gap between ships, using it to reach the Marine vessel 30.
- Launches powerful stretching punches capable of defeating ordinary Marines 32.
- Uses Gear Second to accelerate his attacks and Gear Third to enlarge his fists. Against Kizaru, he combines these forms with Haki, including Gum-Gum Elephant Gatling, Rubber Eagle Rifle, and Rubber Vulture Rocket Launcher 105 113 119.
- Uses a Haki-coated Gum-Gum Elephant Gun while fighting alongside Zoro and Wuli against Kizaru 133.
Observation Haki
Luffy can deliberately evade gunfire through Observation Haki.
- Avoids a barrage of Marine bullets while moving through the battlefield 32.
- Wuli identifies his evasive ability as Observation Haki and notes that Luffy had previously allowed bullets to hit him rather than being unable to dodge 32.
- Senses Kizaru’s approach and warns Usopp and Nami, though Kizaru still attacks too quickly for the crew to stop him 114 115.
- Uses Observation Haki to track Kizaru’s extreme speed during their direct fight 119.
Armament and Conqueror’s Haki
- Coats his enlarged Gear Third fists with Armament Haki to attack Kizaru’s Logia body. His earlier punches, thrown without Haki, pass harmlessly through the Admiral’s light form 113.
- Hardens his hands with Armament Haki while using Gear Second against Kizaru 119.
- Coats Gum-Gum Eagle Whip with Conqueror’s Haki, though Kizaru blocks the kick with one hand 120.
Combat Ability
Luffy is recognized as one of the Worst Generation and carries a 400-million-berry bounty 30.
- Boards a Marine warship voluntarily alongside Zoro and overwhelms ordinary Marine soldiers 31.
- Protects Zoro from gunfire while Zoro defeats the surrounding Marines 31.
- His strength is significant enough that Wuli assigns himself to confront Luffy while allowing Shu to pursue Zoro 31.
- Leads the Straw Hats against Admiral Kizaru and continues attacking despite the Admiral’s speed and their initial defeat. A later coordinated assault with Zoro and Wuli forces Kizaru to fight seriously 112 119 134 135.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Encounter with the Marines
The Straw Hat Pirates encounter Wuli and Colonel Shu shortly after entering the New World. Luffy remains confident while Usopp and Chopper panic, and he counters Shu’s cannon barrage with Gum-Gum Balloon 29 30.
When Zoro runs across Luffy’s stretched arm to board the Marine ship, Luffy suddenly retracts it, sending both of them crashing onto the enemy vessel 30. Luffy then shields Zoro from gunfire and helps incapacitate the surrounding Marines 31.
Confrontation with Wuli
Wuli intervenes to stop one of Luffy’s punches against a Marine subordinate, then reveals detailed information about Luffy’s lineage, childhood, Shanks, and Rayleigh 32. The revelations halt the battle and provoke Zoro’s killing intent toward Wuli 32 33.
Luffy prevents Zoro from attacking immediately and instead questions Wuli directly. Wuli refuses to explain his connection to Luffy, only stating: “My name is Wuli. I am currently a Marine colonel” 33 34.
Escape from the Ocean Waterfalls
As Wuli and Zoro’s duel escalates, Nami detects an abnormal superstorm and rising sea levels. Luffy remains unresponsive during the crisis, forcing Sanji to carry him back to the Thousand Sunny 36 39.
The Straw Hats escape the reverse-flow waterfalls with Coup de Burst. Afterward, the crew concludes that Wuli’s knowledge makes him an unusually dangerous Marine and expects to meet him again 39 40.
Endpoint Island and the Neo Navy
During the conflict involving Zephyr’s Neo Navy, Luffy seeks to recover his straw hat and have Ain reverse her ability’s effects on Nami, Robin, Chopper, and Brook. Wuli takes the hat to draw Luffy away from Zephyr, prompting Luffy to pursue him into the area where Zoro and Ain are fighting 104 105.
After Wuli reveals his face, Luffy recognizes him from their earlier encounter. Wuli returns the undamaged hat and brokers an agreement under which Ain restores the affected Straw Hats. When Zoro later questions Wuli’s allegiance and remains hostile, Luffy insists they honor the agreement 105 106 108.
Battle with Kizaru
Kizaru intercepts the Straw Hats as they prepare to leave. Luffy steadies his frightened crew, urging them to trust the strength they have gained over two years. Kizaru’s reference to the Paramount War recalls Ace’s death, and Luffy vows to protect the people he loves 111 112.
Luffy initially attacks Kizaru without Haki and cannot harm his light-form body. He switches to Gear Third and Armament Haki as the crew mounts a combined assault. When Kizaru targets his companions at overwhelming speed, Luffy warns them but cannot prevent the attacks 113 114 115.
After Wuli saves Robin and Chopper, Luffy thanks him and directly challenges Kizaru. He uses Gear Second and Haki to keep fighting, but Kizaru evades his barrage and later knocks him away. Luffy rejoins Zoro and Wuli against the Admiral; their first joint clash ends in defeat, but Zephyr’s detonation of Dyna Stones gives them an opening for another coordinated assault 118 119 120 133 134 135.
